"Sign the papers, Marcus. You've embarrassed me long enough."

Isabella's voice was ice as she threw the divorce papers at her husband in front of her entire family. For two years, Marcus Chen had played the role of the perfect failure, the broke husband who couldn't afford a decent meal, let alone save his wife's struggling company.

But Marcus held a secret that could shatter everything: he was Marcus Liang, the hidden son of the Liang dynasty, one of Asia's wealthiest families. He'd walked away from billions to find real love, to see who would want him when he had nothing.

Now Isabella wants out. Her father is forcing her into marriage with a ruthless competitor. And Marcus has seventy-two hours before his family's enemies discover his location and destroy everyone he's tried to protect.

When the beggar reveals he's been a prince all along, will it be too late to save the woman who never knew his truth? And can revenge and love exist in the same heart?

CHAPTER ONE
Marcus Chen stirred the pot of instant noodles on the small electric stove and tried not to think about the fact that he'd eaten the same meal for six days straight. The tiny kitchen in their one-bedroom apartment barely had space for one person, let alone two, but Isabella was working late at the boutique again. She was always working late these days. His phone buzzed. A text from Gerald Monroe, his father-in-law: Family dinner tomorrow. 7 PM. Don't be late. Actually, don't come at all. Marcus deleted the message without responding. He was used to Gerald's hostility by now. Two years of it had built up a thick skin, though sometimes, late at night, he wondered if he'd made the right choice. Walking away from the Liang fortune had seemed noble at twenty-six. At twenty-eight, eating noodles in a cramped apartment while his wife grew to hate him, it seemed foolish. But he'd learned the truth, hadn't he? He'd learned exactly what people valued. The door opened and Isabella walked in, her black hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, her green eyes tired and distant. She was still beautiful, even exhausted. Marcus remembered when those eyes used to light up at the sight of him. "There's noodles," he offered, gesturing at the pot. "I ate at the shop." She dropped her purse on the counter and headed for the bedroom without looking at him. "How was your day?" "Long." She paused at the bedroom door, her back to him. "Dad called me. He wants us at dinner tomorrow." "I got the message." "We should go." Marcus turned off the stove. "Isabella, your father sent me a text telling me not to come." "Then I'll go alone." Her voice was flat, emotionless. "Like I do everything else." The words hung in the air like smoke. Marcus felt something c***k inside his chest, but his face remained calm. "If that's what you want." She finally turned to look at him, and for a moment, anger flickered in her eyes. "What I want is to not worry about whether the electricity will get shut off next month. What I want is to save my mother's boutique instead of watching it die slowly. What I want is…" She stopped herself, pressing her lips together. "Never mind. I'm tired." She disappeared into the bedroom and closed the door. Marcus poured the noodles into a bowl and sat at their tiny table. Through the thin walls, he could hear their neighbor's television. A commercial about luxury cars. He smiled without humor. His phone buzzed again. This time it was James Park, his Friend. We need to talk. Tomorrow. It's urgent. Marcus frowned. James never used the word urgent unless something was actually wrong. He typed back: Where? The usual place. 10 AM. Marcus set the phone down and stared at his bowl of noodles. They were getting cold, but he'd lost his appetite. The bedroom door opened again. Isabella emerged in her pajamas, but instead of going to the bathroom, she walked to the kitchen and grabbed a folder from her purse. She held it for a long moment, her back still to him, her shoulders tense. "Marcus." "Yes?" "We need to talk." She turned around and placed the folder on the table between them. He opened it, Divorce papers. Already filled out, just needing his signature. "Isabella…" "Don't." She held up a hand. "Please don't make this harder than it already is. We both know this isn't working. We haven't been happy in over a year." "You haven't been happy," he corrected quietly. "There's a difference." "You're right." Her voice shook slightly. "I haven't been happy. I thought love would be enough. I really did. When I married you, I didn't care that you had no money. I didn't care that my family disowned me. I thought we'd build something together." "We still can…" "With what, Marcus? With these noodles? With your delivery job that pays minimum wage? With the English lessons you teach in coffee shops?" Her eyes were wet now, but angry. "I'm drowning. My mother's boutique is three months from bankruptcy. My father won't speak to me. And you just sit there every night, eating noodles, acting like everything is fine!" Marcus stayed silent. What could he say? That he had fifty billion dollars sitting in accounts around the world? That he could save her boutique with the loose change in his investment portfolio? That he'd been testing her, testing them, testing love itself? The truth sounded cruel even in his own head. "My father has found a solution," Isabella continued, wiping her eyes. "There's a businessman, Victor Kane. He's willing to invest in Monroe Imports if…" "If you marry him." Marcus finished the sentence, his voice colder than he intended. She nodded, not meeting his eyes. "The wedding is in three months. I need you to sign the papers so I can move forward." "You're selling yourself." "I'm saving my family." She lifted her chin. "Something you've never understood because you don't have one." That wasn't true, but she didn't know that. She didn't know about the Liang family, about Raymond who wanted him dead, about the empire waiting for him across the Pacific. She knew nothing because he'd told her nothing. "What if I told you I could help?" he asked quietly. "What if I could save the boutique, save your father's company?" She laughed, a bitter sound. "With what money, Marcus? Are you going to rob a bank? Win the lottery?" She shook her head. "I don't need fantasies. I need reality. And the reality is that we made a mistake. We rushed into marriage thinking love was enough, but it's not. It never is." She picked up the folder and placed it directly in front of him. "Please sign them. You can stay here for two more weeks to find a new place. After that, I'll be moving back to my father's house until the wedding." "You're really going to marry him? A man you don't love?" "Love?" She smiled sadly. "Love doesn't pay bills, Marcus. Love doesn't save businesses. Love doesn't put food in your stomach. I learned that the hard way." She turned and walked back to the bedroom, closing the door again with that same quiet click. Marcus sat alone in the kitchen, staring at the divorce papers. His noodles were completely cold now. He pulled out his phone and called James. "I know it's late…" he started. "I'm awake," James interrupted. "What happened?" "She wants a divorce. She's marrying Victor Kane in three months." Silence on the other end. Then: "Victor Kane? Marcus, that's…" "I know who he is." "Does she know? Does she know he's the one who tried to kill you?" "No. And she can't know. Not yet." "Then what are you going to do?" Marcus looked at the divorce papers, then at the closed bedroom door, then at his reflection in the darkened window. A poor man stared back at him. A mask he'd worn for two years to test something that had already failed the test. "I don't know," he admi tted. "But we need to talk tomorrow. You said it was urgent."
