Birthday Cake

1570 Words
Beth POV I managed to escape from my mum in the kitchen without too many issues, mainly because she was in shock. I am too! I found myself sitting on my bed in the basement, cuddling Connor's pillow, whilst remembering what had happened in the kitchen. Whilst washing the glasses, I noticed the smell of an evergreen forest and then I heard my name. I was stunned when I saw Connor by the door. When I turned round, he was right in front of me and I knew the smell was him, it was so strong, I felt intoxicated, drunk even. I remember him gripping the sink either side of me, as if he didn't have the strength to stand. His blue eyes were so mesmerising! Suddenly he'd closed the gap and was kissing me! And I kissed him back! I couldn't get enough of him. When he lifted on to the sink and rubbed himself against me, I couldn't help but moan. I found myself grinding my core against him, heat stirring within me! If mum hadn't walked in on us, I’m sure we would have gone all the way! I feel my cheeks flush and moisture build between my legs at the thought! And his scent on this pillow isn't helping. I don't know how long I sat on my bed, cuddling Connor's pillow, and recalling those events. But I was brought out of my thoughts when I heard singing. They are singing Happy Birthday to Connor! I wish I could be out there singing with them and seeing Connor's reaction to the cake, but after what happened in the kitchen it would just be awkward, plus I don't exactly have any party clothes to wear. So, I just continue to sit on my bed cuddling Connor's pillow and breathing in his scent. Connor POV David and I joined the party outside and I spent most of my time meeting and greeting the guests and shaking hands with all the unmated females, all of them hoping for the spark of the mating bond and the prospect of becoming the next Luna. But my heart's not in it, mainly due to the fact I know who my mate is and she isn't at the party. After shaking yet another girl's hand, David pulls me one side away from the crowd and prying eyes. "What is wrong with you, Connor? I thought you would be excited about the prospect of finding your mate!" I looked around me, making sure there was no-one was in earshot before I answered, "I've already found my mate and she isn't at the party." "What! Who?" "Beth." "Beth? The loner from school?" "Yes, our maid, Sarah, is her mum." "She's the reason I found you outside the kitchen, isn't she?" I just nodded in response. David pats me on the back, "Well, that explains your obsession with her for the last few years!" grinning at me, which just causes me to scowl back at him. Looking back towards the party, I sighed heavily. "I suppose we had better get back to the party. Mum will want to cut the cake soon!" "Look on the bright side, most people will start leaving after the cake! Only those unmated females that you haven't greeted yet and your friends and family will be left." "Your right! Come on then, back to the party." I said, leading the way back. After a few steps, I hear my mum's voice, "There you are! Come on Connor, it’s time to cut the cake." "Coming!" I called back and we headed into the marquee. As I walk towards the table with the cake, everyone starts singing Happy Birthday. The song finishes as I reach the table and Sarah lifts a cover, revealing the most gorgeous looking cake ever! It is covered in midnight blue icing with silver piped words on the top, but the most stunning thing is the piped body of a silver wolf on the side leading up to a candle in the shape of a howling wolf's head. I was so overcome by the sight of the cake, that I immediately hugged Sarah, "Oh, Sarah! The cake is beautiful! Thank you." "Um.... You're welcome, Connor." Sarah sounded shocked by my outburst. Still hugging her, I whispered in her ear, "You did create it, didn't you? You didn't buy it?" "It’s not from a shop." She answers, cryptically. It occurred to me that she didn't answer my first question, so I asked again, "did you make the cake?" "No, Beth did." I finally release her from my hug and am greeted by my mum's astounded face. "I'm sorry, it just looks so good!" I apologised, sheepishly. My mum smiles understandingly, "Sarah has definitely outdone herself this time. Now, it is time for you to make your wish!" I turned back to the cake and found that someone had lit the candle. Taking a deep breath, I blew it out and made my wish. There's a round of applause before my dad hands me a knife to cut the cake with. I look at the cake and decide that I can't cut through the wolf, so instead, I cut the wolf on the side of the cake entirely and put it on a plate. My mum looks at me with a confused expression. I just shrug, "I didn't want to ruin the artwork," I tell her. I hand the knife back to my dad and pick up the plate, "I'm going to put this piece in the fridge." "I'll do that, if you like?" Sarah offered. "No, it’s okay. You've done enough today, Sarah. I'll do it." I replied and made my way to the house. Beth POV I'm still sitting on my bed cuddling the pillow, when I hear footsteps coming down the stairs. It didn't sound like my mum, but I didn't know who else would come down here. "Beth? Are you down there?" Its Connor! What's he doing here? "Yes, I'm here." I answered, sitting myself up straighter as he reached the bottom of the stairs. He looks around the room and when his eyes meet mine, he smiles, "Hi." "Hi." I smiled back at him. He walks towards me and sits on the end of my mattress, before placing a plate between us. "I brought you some cake." Looking down at the plate, I gasped. There was a large slice of cake on the plate, but that wasn't what made me gasp. What made me gasp, was the fact that it was the entire side of the cake with the wolf I had piped on it with the candle still attached. "Thanks." I looked back up at Connor and found him gazing intently at me. "No, it should be me that’s thanking you! The cake was gorgeous! You must have put a lot of effort into it, which is why I couldn't bring myself to cut through your artwork." I feel my cheeks blush, "How do you know I made it?" I ask. "Your mum sort of told me. So, you're Sarah's daughter, huh?" All I could do was nod in response. "So how come I never see you on the way to and from school?" He asks. I look down at my hands resting on the pillow in my lap, "I go early and leave late so I can spend time in the library and do my homework." "That explains it alright! Beth.....about what happened in the kitchen...." I looked up at him and found him looking down at his hands and I smiled at his sudden nervousness. "It was nice, I enjoyed it." I surprised myself with my response. His head shot up and I found myself gazing into his deep blue eyes, "you did!" He exclaimed. "I mean, so did I." We just continue to sit there gazing into each other’s eyes, neither of us moving or speaking. "Beth, are you down there?" We both jumped at the sound of Mrs Baines's voice. "Yes, I'm here, Mrs Baines." I called back. We hear the clink of her heels on the steps, as she makes her way down, "is Connor with you?" She asks. "I'm here, mum." Connor replied, as we both turned towards the stairs, waiting for her to appear. "Good." She remarks, coming into sight, "now, Sarah told me about what happened in the kitchen earlier." Connor and I glanced at each other, before we both stared down at our hands, neither of us wanting to meet Mrs Baines's eyes. "I'm not mad," she said, sitting down on my mum's bed, "but I do think we need to talk about it." "Okay," Connor and I say at the same time, still looking at our hands. "Connor, please could you ask your father and Sarah to join us down here and ask David to keep an eye on Crystal." "Of course." Connor says, rising from my mattress and heading upstairs. I suddenly started to feel very nervous with just Mrs Baines being there, so words just started blurting out of my mouth, "Nothing happened Mrs Baines, well not nothing, but we stopped before it went too far. It won't happen again, I swear!" Mrs Baines just smiled down at me, "it’s okay, Beth. You have nothing to worry about. I will explain everything when everyone gets here." We just sat there, waiting in silence.
