Prologue One
Leon POV
Swigging my scotch, I was half tempted to down it in one, but I knew there was no point in trying to drown my sorrows. Being an Alpha werewolf, alcohol doesn't affect me much. It just made me tipsy but not drunk.
Swirling the amber liquid around my glass, I glumly watched the ice tumbling around.
‘Are you going to be like this all evening?’ my best friend, Darren, asked from his seat across the small round table.
Sighing, I shrugged my shoulders, ‘I don't think I will ever find her; I might as well stop looking.’
‘She is out there somewhere. You will find her eventually.’ Darren replied.
‘But when, Darren, when? It's been seven years! I have visited every pack, been to every mate party, but still haven't found her.’ I exclaimed, slamming my glass down on the table.
‘Perhaps she isn't eighteen yet or she was away from her pack when you visited it and your paths haven't crossed. You will find her, or she will find you.’ Darren said encouragingly.
‘I want what you have had for the past seven years. I want someone to love, someone to love me, a family.’ I moaned.
'So, you are giving up on your mate?’ Darren asked.
'Not giving up exactly, just looking elsewhere for love in the meantime. Like over there.' I suggested, jutting my chin towards a brunette sitting alone at the bar.
Darren looked over at the woman, 'but she is human!' he exclaimed.
'And?' I queried, raising an eyebrow at my friend.
'Your dad won't accept a human and you know it. He won't pass the alpha title to you if you have a human mate.' He clarified.
'Who said I wanted the title?' I asked. Darren just raised his eyebrows and rolled his eyes at me.
'Okay, fine. I want the title, but I also want to experience love.' I said, dejectedly, placing my elbows on the table and resting my head in my hands.
Darren's phone buzzed in his pocket. Taking it out, he briefly looked at it before lifting his own glass and downing the contents. 'It's Lisa, I need to call the kids before they head to bed. Will you be okay if I head back to the hotel?' He asked me.
'Yeah, go ahead. I'll just hang out here a bit longer. See you in the morning.' I told him before lifting my glass and taking another sip.
Darren rose from his seat and patted me on my shoulder as he walked behind me on his way to the door. Sipping my drink, I watched the woman at the bar as she turned at the sound of the door when Darren opened it, before sighing and turning back to the bar and her drink.
Finishing my drink, I rose from my seat and took my now empty glass to the bar. Taking the seat next to the brunette, I signaled the bartender for another drink. Glancing to the side, I noticed the woman's glass was nearly empty. When the bartender arrives, I ask for another scotch on the rocks and then turn toward the woman beside me. 'Can I buy you a drink?' I asked.
The woman jumped at the sound of my voice. 'Umm, pardon,' she stuttered.
Smiling at her, I asked again. 'Can I buy you a drink?'
She looked down at her glass before looking at me and shaking her head. 'No thank you. I really should be going. '
'Is it something I said?' I inquired.
'No, it's just that I was meeting someone, and they aren't coming now. ' She stammered.
'I can't believe that a man has stood up such a beautiful woman.' I said, trying to be my most charming self.
She smiled shyly, lowering her eyes to the glass in front of her. 'No, not a man. Just a friend, but she has had a better offer.' She told me holding up her phone to me.
Looking at the phone, I see a picture of a blonde woman taking a selfie whilst a man is nuzzling and kissing her neck. 'Ahhh!' I exclaimed. 'Well, perhaps I can keep you company instead. My name is Leon, by the way.' I said, holding out my hand to her.
'Sarah.' She replied, placing her hand in mine which I brought up to my lips and kissed gently.
'I suppose I could stay for one more drink.' She said, smiling up at me.
'Great!' I exclaimed, releasing her hand. 'What are you drinking?'
'Vodka and orange, please.'
Turning to the bartender, who had been waiting patiently during our exchange, I nodded at him to confirm the order before returning my attention to the beautiful Sarah sitting beside me.
