Sarah POV
Four years later.
I was busy cooking in the kitchen whilst my mind wandered back to the night I met Leon four years ago. We had ended up having a few drinks together and enjoying a pleasant conversation until I had to leave due to having work in the morning.
Leon had offered to walk me home and we carried on with our conversation on the way. When we got to my flat, I had invited him in for a coffee and he ended up spending the night on the settee after I fell asleep with my head on his shoulder.
He was the perfect gentleman. I had woken up in my bed, still fully clothed minus shoes, and he was laid out on my sofa using his suit jacket as a blanket.
I had cooked him breakfast that morning and we ended up seeing each other every evening afterwards, with him staying over most nights. Within a month, we were sleeping together. Within six months, we were living together in an apartment he had rented on a long-term lease.
Now, I am waiting for Leon to return from a business trip. He was supposed to return a couple of days ago but had called to say he had been delayed and would return around 6pm today.
I had some news to tell him. I had done a pregnancy test this morning as I had missed my period and it had come back positive. I was so excited about telling him, hence the romantic dinner for two that I am currently cooking.
The table is all set with non-alcoholic wine in the cooler. The positive test is wrapped and hidden in my bedside drawer. My plan is that after the meal, I will change into something more comfortable, like sexy underwear and a robe, and then present him with his present. Well, that's my plan. I am just waiting for him to get home.
Stirring the sauce in the pan, I heard the front door open. Turning the gas down on the hob, I wiped my hands on my apron before rushing out of the kitchen.
Stepping into the hall, I saw Leon looking dapper in his suit in front of the open door. I went to take a step towards him to welcome him home, when a tall leggy blonde woman stepped up beside him and wrapped her arms around his bicep.
'What a quaint little apartment you have, Leon.' She says in a high-pitched squeal, causing a grimace to cross Leon's face briefly.
Leon and I just stared at one another as the blonde detached herself from Leon's arm and sniffed the air approaching the kitchen door. Clapping her hands together, she turned back to Leon, 'Oh, Leon! Did you tell your maid to cook us a nice romantic dinner? Ohhh, how thoughtful!'
Her words seemed to shake Leon from his thoughts as he looked toward her with a forced smile. 'Stacey, this is Sarah.' He said, gesturing towards me. 'Sarah, this is Stacey, my m....fiance.'
'Fiancé?!' I stammered, confused and shocked. I could feel my hands start to tremble.
Leon nodded solemnly, casting his gaze downwards, 'Yes, my fiancé.'
'Well, if you would excuse me, I need to check on dinner,' I said as I headed back into the kitchen.
Stopping in front of the hob, I stirred the sauce, trying to stop the tears welling up in my eyes from falling.
'Sarah!?' His voice came from behind me. I can't turn around; I can’t look at him. Because if I do, I know that my tears will fall. Instead, I continue stirring the sauce.
'Please speak to me!' He pleads.
'Dinner will be ready in five minutes, it just needs dishing up.' I told him, my voice quivering. Letting go of the spoon, I remove my apron. 'Don't forget to stir the sauce so it doesn't burn to the bottom of the pan.'
'Sarah, please!' He begged once more, but I couldn't face him. Not like this.
Placing my apron on the counter next the hob, I started to walk towards the other exit of the kitchen. 'I'll leave you two in peace.'
I calmly walked out of the room, but as soon as I reached the hallway, I ran for the stairs and our bedroom, shutting, and locking the door behind me. My tears finally start to fall as I grab the suitcase from the top of the wardrobe and start packing.
Once the case is full of as many clothes and toiletries that I can fit in, I open the bedside cabinet drawer to get my wallet and passport. My heart drops into my stomach when my eyes land on the wrapped-up pregnancy test.
I debate whether to leave it for him to find, to chuck it in the bin or to take it with me. Ending up putting it in the suitcase, I zip it shut. Donning my coat and shoes, I grabbed my handbag and the suitcase and unlocked the bedroom door.
Opening it slightly, I listened for a moment. Hearing Stacey's squeaky voice downstairs, I slowly inch towards and down the stairs, being careful not to step on the loose boards.
As I approach the kitchen, I hear Stacey praising the food I have cooked and how I should be kept on as a cook in their new home. Scoffing internally, I creep past the slightly open door and quietly leave my home.
Heading towards the bus station, I passed a cashpoint. I withdrew as much cash as I could and bought a ticket for the next bus out of town.
I can't stay here, there would be too many memories. I will start a new life somewhere far away from here and bring up my child on my own. I have wasted enough of my life loving a man who never loved me back. I will not do it again!
