Smith stood where he was, watching her with a mix of guilt and desperation. He wanted to say something, anything, but every word felt wrong.
Finally, Rose broke the silence, her voice low and trembling. “Do you even realize what you’ve done?”
“Rose, I—”
“No!” she snapped, spinning around to face him. Her eyes glistened with tears she refused to let fall. “You don’t get to explain this away, Smith. You made a decision—a selfish, thoughtless decision—and now it’s here, in our lives, wrecking everything!”
“It wasn’t selfish,” Smith said, his voice tight. “I was a broke college kid trying to make ends meet after my parents cut me off during my escapades. I didn’t think—”
“That’s the problem! You never think things through!” she interrupted, her anger spilling over. “You didn’t think about the consequences then, and you didn’t think about me when you hid it from me for five years. Do you even know what it feels like to find out something like this from you—not when you made the decision, not when we were getting married, but now, when it’s too late to prepare myself?”
Smith flinched, the weight of her words sinking in. “I know it’s complicated. But we can figure it out. We’ve always been able to figure things out.”
Rose shook her head, letting out a bitter laugh. “This isn’t forgetting to pay the bills, Smith. This is a sixteen-year-old boy who’s part of you—and a betrayal I can’t even wrap my head around.”
Smith’s jaw tightened. “It wasn’t a betrayal, Rose. I didn’t cheat on you.
“That’s not the point!” she shouted, her voice echoing in the quiet house. “The point is you kept this from me. You made a choice that affects our marriage, our entire lives—and you didn’t think I deserved to know.”
Her words hit him like a punch to the gut. He opened his mouth to argue but stopped, realizing she was right.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I should’ve told you. I should’ve been honest.”
Rose’s shoulders sagged, the anger in her expression giving way to exhaustion. She rubbed her temples, her head throbbing from the whirlwind of emotions. “I just… “
Smith moved closer, cautiously placing a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t pull away this time, but her body remained rigid.
“I don’t have all the answers,” he admitted. “But I know I don’t want to lose you. I’ll do whatever it takes to make this right—with you, with James and the donor parents.”
Rose let out a shaky breath, her tears finally spilling over. “I don’t even know what ‘right’ looks like anymore.”
For a moment, they stood in tense silence, the weight of the confession pressing down on them both. Finally, Lila turned to face him fully, her expression a mix of pain and determination.
“This isn’t something you can just fix with apologies, Smith,” she said, her voice steady despite the tears. “This is going to change everything. And I don’t know if I can handle it.”
Smith nodded, his heart sinking. “I understand. But I’ll do whatever it takes to make you believe in us again.”
Rose didn’t respond. Instead, she walked past him with her already packed luggage, heading toward the door. At the doorway, she paused, her voice barely above a whisper. “I'm not divorcing you but I need some time. Don’t follow me.”
Smith stayed rooted to the spot as she disappeared down the hall, the sound of the bedroom door clicking shut echoing in his ears.
“Do you need me to drop you off somewhere, ma'am?” Jim, her chauffeur, asked as he noticed Rose coming out of the room with boxes.
“I’m fine Jim. Just book me a cab please “, Rose responded.
As she was about to leave the house, she turned one more time and all the memories came rushing all at once. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Alone in the room, Smith leaned heavily against the vanity, running a hand through his hair. For the first time in their marriage, he wasn’t sure how to fix what he’d broken.

Rose rang the bell on Katherine’s door all drenched from the rain, and she opened it immediately, looking at her in panic.
“Rose, I’ve been trying to call you. What’s going on?”
Katherine looked at her face, noticed her blotched eyes and immediately hugged her.
“I…I,” Rose choked on the tears that wouldn’t stop running down her face.
“Come here, I got you,” as she opened the door more and helped Rose with her boxes.
They walked to the living room, then she handed her a glass of water.
“Rose talk to me. Did something happen?”
She shook her head in denial and immediately burst into tears. “He has a child.”
“That cocksucking son of a….” I cut her short before she could finish her statement.
“I know how you feel babes, but hear me out first before you rain insults.” I go ahead to tell her everything that transpired earlier that day.
“How dare he hide those things from you! You have done nothing else but love that fool !” She yelled after hearing everything.
“I know that I’m barren but this just seems like my punishment” Rose wailed.
Katherine immediately went to Rose’s side and placed her hand on her shoulder, trying to console her.
“ You aren’t barren my friend. It is just not time yet, and he has no right to do those things to you because you have been through so much for him.”
Katherine turned Rose to look at her face to face “f**k him. If he could say those things to you, then he wouldn’t be worth crying over. It might hurt but I’m here for you every step of the way”
Rose placed her head on her friend's shoulder and just cried till she slept in her arms.
