Chapter One
" May I sit here?" came the voice from above me. I almost scoff, this was the third one in an hour. I look up to find a man casting a shadow above me. There is no cocky smile or confident look like the last two. This one seems indifferent. Like he could sit anywhere really and not care if there is a beautiful woman right before him. I am amused. This is the first time my beauty didn't faze a man. " of course," I tell him, flashing my best smile. Still, no reaction comes from him. He simply nods then pulls out a seat from my table. Settling in, he throws his head back with a heavy sigh. When he sits back up after a few minutes, he looks straight at me and asks " What are we having for lunch?" he asks. I was slightly confused before it dawns on me, he is the person I've been waiting for. " Maybe dinner, I've waited for two hours. "I say. "My secretary ought to have briefed you. I had a very terrible morning." He retorts. " It's alright. I'll demand compensation later." I state matter of factly. I had never been calmer or as composed in my life. Well, I had been, at every interview, it just amazed me how I was able to pull it off every time. " That's a pretty heartless way to regard a man who just made it out of an accident." He deadpans. " Your secretary said you were fine and you don't seem to be in bad shape so, that's that. Let's not mix personal affairs with business. If you don't feel up for the meeting, we could reschedule." I say to him unmoved. He had the most stoic face I had ever seen as if life itself was uninteresting. Aside from that, his features were most impressive. His hair fell short above his left eye giving him a boyish appearance that must have come from lack of care. When he thinned his lips, a tiny dimple appeared on his right cheek. He had a strong unshaven jaw with a nose sharp-edged enough to split a tree. If only he smiled, his face would have shown so much more details and added colour to those grey eyes. " I hope you keep this attitude even at work. I would appreciate a person who always puts work first. Show me the proposal." He says and snaps his fingers for the waiter. They had made the reservation in the restaurant before my arrival. All I had to do was show up with a mind-blowing proposal and impress the man in front of me. This wasn't my first or tenth gig, so I wasn't nervous. I never even applied, the last company I worked for recommended me to them. I was doing great for myself at 23 and I was confident that my works were golden. We talked over an early dinner and the only thing he didn't like about my design was the colour. He enjoyed vibrance and I needed to add some brighter furniture to my piece. By the end of our meal, I had landed a huge contract with a very handsome profit. " You're beautiful Iris, don't let it interfere at work. The men can't help themselves, but you can. Diane would call you later. Enjoy the rest of your day." And with that, he disappeared through the sliding doors. I didn't say thank you nor did he even wait long enough to hear it. This man had no intention of being comfortable outside work. I got up also and tipped the waiter who had been extremely nice since I arrived and headed outside to my car. I head straight home since I didn't have the rest of the day planned out. I was sure to meet a splendid dinner and warm arms to fall into. Adrian had been lovely since we started dating, he never seemed upset about anything. I had loved the simple way with which he reasoned and how much kindness he showed me the day we met at the station. I had almost missed the train when I rushed in, half running to the ticket stand. I was miserable and utterly disappointed after hearing they were sold out. I had no intention of going back to Dad's house that day, and luckily for me, some stranger offered me a ticket. His friend had an emergency and couldn't make it so he was kind enough to offer it to me. I was overjoyed when he refused to collect the money for it, I bought us some snacks and we chatted to Seelam. It was a four-hour train ride and I never got tired or bored of it. He filled my ears with tales of old, about war, history, and adventure and how less magical our era is. Things that I never really gave much thought to. I was intrigued and fascinated, way more than I should have been. We got off the train and exchanged contacts. He visited me three days later with the promise of lunch. I was ready to go by the time he had arrived, instead, I opened the door to find him with grocery bags. He came with all he needed to make lunch or dinner all by himself. We lost track of time and it was past midnight when he was ready to leave. He asked if he could spend the night andafter enjoying so much of his company I could only say yes. We ended up sleeping somewhere around 3 a.m after we had the craziest rounds of s*x. I woke in his arms the next day with my smile reflecting his and like that, he's been living in my flat. ”Adrian!” I yell as I step out of my sneakers. I am so exhausted and all I can think of are his wet kisses. He strolls out of my bedroom casually with a towel tied loosely around his waist. His feet make a splat splat sound over the hardwood. He makes a trail of water as he approaches. I gasp when he pulls me towards him. He graces me with one of his charming smiles before his moist lips gently caress my mouth until I open up and let his tongue find mine. I start to slowly devour him as our pace increases and he slides his right hand to rest on my lower back. I tilt my head towards his face to deepen our kiss but he pulls back slightly with a chuckle. ”I’ll have you after dinner and it doesn't matter if you've eaten or not. You must have what I cooked.” He whispers over my lips. I almost want to pass on his offer but I could never tell which was better, the s*x or the food so this was another opportunity to weigh them. It’s deep into the night before Adrian finally falls asleep. I lay beside him, stroking his chest while thinking to myself if this one would last longer. My days are always really long and I never have enough time to spare on relationships. Adrian and I have only lasted 3 weeks because he's in my apartment half the time. My life is difficult enough as it is and being very committed to my career, relationships that can't fit in my schedule would never work. Adrian has never complained and he seems to understand why I put in so much effort. He may just be the healthy distraction I need.
