Becca’s POV
I could hear my heartbeat pounding as the door opened. It felt like the world was crashing down on me. I grabbed the table tightly, too nervous to see who she was.
As she entered, everyone clapped and cheered her, then returned to dancing as the DJ played his music. I couldn’t get a clear view of the face because my eyes were teary at that moment.
She waved at everyone, and to my greatest surprise, she started walking in my direction. As she moved closer, I began to see more clearly. She’s slim and slender, with blonde hair. Suddenly, I said softly, “Could that be Zane?”
“Yes Becca, I’m Zane,” she responded.
It totally skipped my mind that she’s a higher werewolf than me and therefore could hear from a far distance.
“Hi, Becca, it’s been a while,” she said, plastering a smile on her face. Her entire aura screamed of pride.
I stood there, mute, my eyes making direct contact with hers. I stared for a while and finally said, “It’s just a year. Can’t call that ‘a while,’ can we?” I asked as I gave her a dirty look.
“Easy there, Becca, I just came around to celebrate with you and, most especially, meet my mate.” She stuck her nose in the air as she spoke.
It instantly brought warm tears to my eyes when I heard that, but I held it down. I couldn’t give her the pleasure of seeing me cry.
I looked her straight in the eye and told her, “I know you’ve always wished to be like me, you’ve always wanted everything I had, but I never thought you’d go this far.”
Her face crinkled. She acted surprised, like she didn’t know what I was talking about. “What… what are you talking about, Becca?” she said, stammering.
“Oh please, drop the act,” I said out loud.
She grinned and said, “Can a weak she-wolf like you really be with Nathan? You must be dreaming, girl. I and Nathan are lovers; we’ve always been before you came into the picture, so just rest, please.”
“Oh really? He left his fated mate for selfish reasons. What makes you think he won’t leave you when the situation warrants it?"
“And who is the fated mate, if I may ask? In case you’re mistaken, I am Nathan’s fated mate, and I’ll advise you to get that straight.” She said, pointing her fingers at me.
Nathan noticed the argument going on between us. He knew it was going to escalate soon, so he came around. He wrapped his hands around her waist from behind to get me jealous and said, “Hey beautiful, I’ve been waiting for you.”
I swallowed heavily as I stood there watching them steal my shine on my birthday. I crossed my arms behind me as my fingers rolled into a fist. He was trying to get to me, but I fought hard within to make sure he didn’t succeed in doing that. Beyond the facade, I could sense the pretense, but it hurt regardless.
“I think you should try the cake; it tastes really good,” Nathan told Zane.
“Oh really? I’d really love to as well, but I hope it isn’t poisoned,” she said as she sized me up from head to toe.
“Stop being dramatic, Zane. She wouldn’t do such a thing. As you can see, I’m not dead yet,” he responded. They both laughed out loud and walked away from me.
I stood there with a fake smile on my face. I was hurting within but couldn’t show it. My mother smiled at me from afar; she sensed something was off.
The party ended. Everyone left. It was just I and my thoughts left; reality dawned on me. I sat on the bench on the balcony thinking as tears rolled down my cheeks. Suddenly, my mother spoke from behind.
“What’s the issue, my daughter?” she asked as she placed her hands gently on my cheeks.
“Nathan rejected me as his mate,” my voice was barely a whisper as I spoke. I had cried all day.
Her jaw dropped when I told her because I just told her the night before that I found my fated mate.
“What? How come? Why?” She was short of words and kept asking questions. Finally, she asked, “Who rejected you?”
“Nathan,” sadness clouded my features as I responded.
“Same Nathan who announced his mate at your birthday party?” I nodded my head.
She placed her hand on her forehead as a heavy growl came out from her throat. She went on to ask, “Why exactly did he reject you?”
“He didn’t give any reasonable explanation, I… I can’t really talk about it now.”
“I totally understand how you feel, darling. Getting rejected by your mate is one of the hardest things we can ever go through. The emotional pain, the psychological effects, and many other things. But I want you to be strong, okay?” She said and patted me lightly on my back.
“Nathan has always been so ambitious right from when we were kids. I confronted him, and he confessed to choosing Zane for power and status. He could become an alpha when he marries her.”
Janet shook her head constantly as she heard me speak. She couldn’t utter a single word as she was in shock from the news.
“I’m really trying not think about it but it seems that the harder I try, the more painful it becomes. I’ll be fine, I promise,” I said to Janet as my eyes welled up.
“Yeah, you’ll be fine sweetie. I’m here for you, as well as the entire family,” she said,
She gave me a big hug after making that statement; it felt comforting. My mother knows the right words to say at the right time.
“By the way, have you broken the bond completely?” she asked.
“I haven’t yet. I told him I was going to call him when I was ready. I was still hoping he would change his mind, but I doubt that’s possible now,” I told her.
“Okay, dear, whenever you’re ready to, but the earlier, the better,” she advised.
“Thanks, Mom. I think I feel better now. I will go see him now and get it over with; there’s no reason delaying this any longer.” I said as I wiped my face dry with my cloth.
Jack came outside to check on us. “Why are you all outside? What’s the occasion, please? Or is there an after-party tonight?” he said, plastering a smile on his face and hitting me softly on my arm. Jack is my brother and always seemed to make jokes about everything.
He soon realized my teary eyes and growled out loud. “What’s wrong, little sis? Did anyone hurt you? Give me his address, I’ll head over there right now,” he said jokingly but also meant every word.
“Jack! I don’t need you to beat anyone up, it’s not serious, I promise,” I responded as I wiped my tears off with a white handkerchief I had in my pocket.
“Are you sure? All I need is a name, Becca,” he kept on pressing.
“I’m sure, Jack. I don’t need you causing trouble around, please,” I smiled at him, and he smiled back and patted me on the back gently.
I headed on to Nathan’s house that very evening. His parents let me upstairs since it wasn’t my first time at his side. They’ve always known us to be friends right from when we were kids.
I slowed my pace as I climbed up, my heart was pounding. “Am I really about to do this?” I thought to myself.
As I approached the door, I heard whispers, so I decided to eavesdrop on the conversation a bit before entering.
Zane laughed out loud as Nathan spoke. “I never really loved her to begin with. Who would love someone as weak as that? I just used her to pass the time.”
Those words struck me hard as a sharp pain worked down my spine.
“Imagine the daughter of a Beta who couldn’t shift when she clocked sixteen years; what a weakling!” Zane responded.
“I can’t wait to get this over with. I need to break this bond as soon as possible and be with you finally,” he said, and they both laughed.
My eyes welled up, and I stood by the door. I covered my mouth firmly to prevent myself from crying out loud. At that moment, I began to have second thoughts about coming around now. I couldn’t stand the abuse. I was about to turn back until I heard a loud voice from behind.
“You can go in, Becca. The door is open.”
I almost entered the ground when his father spoke. At the moment, I knew I had no choice but to go in since we all heard him speak loud and clear.
Finally, I summoned courage, kept a stern look, and opened the door. I saw Zane sitting comfortably on Nathan’s lap, and his hands were curled around her, holding her in a tight embrace.
I refused to be affected by that. I kept my cool and spoke. “Hi Nathan, do you have a minute?”
“What are you doing here late this evening? Can’t you see we’re busy at the moment?” Zane said as she pressed her cheeks tightly on his.
Nathan sat there silently; he couldn’t look me straight in the face. This used to be us, but it appears the tables have turned all of a sudden.
I sized her up from head to toe in a bad way and repeated my statement. “Like I said earlier, before the sudden interruption, do you have a minute, Nathan? I need to get this bond over with in no time.”
“Oh, I think she’s ready. Can you give us a minute, please?” he asked her nicely.
She smirked and felt reluctant to stand up. One could guess she wanted to see me sad as we severed the bond.
Nathan, on the other hand, still had little perks of feelings for me, so he insisted she wait outside.
“It won’t be long, I promise. You’ll be back in no time. Just stay with my parents in the living room till I call for you,” he said. She snorted as she dragged her feet out; she wanted to see the whole experience badly.
I stood there patiently, watching them perform their little drama. Although I wasn’t happy things had to be this way, on the other hand, I sensed there was nothing really between them. I’ve known Nathan since we were kids.
“Are you really eager to break this bond, or do you miss me badly and just want to see my pretty face?” he said as his brows tilted up.
“Oh please, just hold it right there,” I interrupted before he could finish his statement.
He kept staring at me for a moment; he couldn’t get his eyes off me. I decided not to look pitiful, even if I was at that moment. I wore a crop top with a short skirt that was way below my knees. I wanted him to feel guilty for what he was about to lose, and my plans seemed to work.
“So how do we do this? Will you sit down for a little discussion?” he asked.
“No, thank you,” I responded sharply, even though I was hurting really bad inside.
“I, Becca, break my bond with you, Nathan,” I said unwaveringly. He was shocked that I was bold enough to say that. He never thought I would ever summon the courage to break my ties with him because he’s all I’ve ever loved.
He looked me straight in the eyes and responded, “I, Nathan, sever my bond with you.”
Immediately, I felt a heavy shiver all around my body and collapsed. Breaking ties with your mate has its consequences, both physically and psychologically. I lost consciousness; that was the only thing I could remember.
When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself lying on the bed in an unfamiliar room, my heart racing fast.
