Becca’s POV
I looked around and couldn’t find anyone; I laid weak and helpless on the bed. All I could think of was to cry for help. Immediately, I tried mind-linking my mother with my abilities but couldn’t because of the weakness. My wolf lay within, helpless as well since I couldn’t transform.
I began hearing footsteps faintly from outside. “Help me!” I screamed but didn’t get any response.
I decided to relax a bit to assess the situation well. I looked around and saw that the room was painted white; I also noticed I wasn’t chained up. “Okay, I think I wasn’t kidn*pped,” I said as I exhaled deeply.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps echoing loudly from outside, walking toward my direction. “So sorry I had to step out for a bit, I ran as fast as possible when you mind-linked me. Do you feel better now?” My mother said immediately when she walked in and saw I was awake.
When I saw her, my memories all came back. Sadness clouded my features as soon as I remembered I broke ties with my mate. “But, where am I?” I said faintly in a low tone.
“You’re on the hospital bed, Becca. Can’t you remember what happened?” She asked as she continuously rubbed my head. My mother was my closest companion then.
“Hospital? Why am I in the hospital?” I thought hard enough, and suddenly, memories started flowing.
“The last thing I remembered was severing my bond with Nathan; I can’t remember anything else after that,” I said.
“Sorry, darling, that’s because you passed out. I sensed something like this might happen, so I asked your brother to wait outside Nathan’s house while you were with him.” She responded.
I took a painful, shuddering breath through my mouth as she said those words. I was still hoping all that happened yesterday was all in my dreams, but I guess I was wrong.
“I recall breaking the bond and nothing thereafter. Could I have passed out immediately after that?” I asked as my brows drew together.
“Yes, you did. I rushed inside as soon as I realized I couldn’t mind-link you again.” Jack interrupted as he walked in.
My face was contorted at that moment. I never thought it would happen that way. “I never knew people pass out during the process,” I said.
“Not everyone does. You have a very strong bond with Nathan; that’s why it happened that way,” she said.
“Had, you mean? It’s all in the past now,” I responded as I plastered a fake smile on my face.
“For how long was I unconscious?” I asked.
“8… 9 hours thereabout,” she replied.
“Wow, that’s a very long time. Did anyone else visit me?” I asked, hoping Nathan would come check on me. That was the least he could do since I fainted in his presence.
“Your father was here earlier but had to go attend to some other matters. Aside from that, just I and Jack,” she said, holding my hands tightly.
“Nathan didn’t come around?” I said faintly. I was shocked at the kind of person he was turning into. We used to be close friends, so I assumed the least he could do was come check on me since he was present when it all happened. I guess he never loved me after all.
Janet placed her hands on my shoulder and said, “You need to quit talking so you can rest well. The doctor said you’ll be discharged in the evening.”
“Can I be discharged now? I’m strong enough,” I said while struggling to get out of the bed.
“No, Becca, let the hospital treat you well. We can go home when your strength is fully restored,” she insisted as she wiped the tears off my face.
I laid back on the bed as she said. I tried as much as possible not to think about the recent events, but it wasn’t working. I couldn’t wait to leave that hospital; I needed to engage myself in other things so I could get my mind off these thoughts.
“Stop crying, Becca, be strong, be a man, be like your bro,” Jack said jokingly as he grinned at me.
“I’m not a man, stupid,” I responded with a smile on my face. Jack is a funny person and always makes jokes out of everything. That was exactly what I needed at that moment though.
I slept for a few more hours, and when I woke up, I was discharged but also advised not to stress myself out. I still felt slight headaches.
When I got home, I was welcomed with arms wide open. My dad was left in the dark; my mother kept the news a secret from him.
“What happened, Janet? Did anyone hurt you?” he asked out of concern as he placed his arms around my shoulder.
I smiled and didn’t utter any words from my mouth.
“Are you sure you’re fine?” He kept on pressing.
“Yeah, Dad, I am,” I smiled at him.
“What are we eating? I’m starving,” Jack interrupted our conversation. I was happy he did; I couldn’t lie to my father, so it was a perfect escape for me.
“Yeah, what are we eating, Dad?” I also asked hastily to change the topic of our conversation.
“There’s cereal in the fridge; you can take that while your mom goes to prepare us dinner,” he said.
“Can you join me in the kitchen for a while before you go rest in your room?” Janet asked.
I stared directly into her eyeballs and realized she was trying to pass a message and wanted time alone with me. I nodded and went ahead with her to the kitchen.
“How are you feeling?” she asked me as she lit up the gas cooker.
I really wish she didn’t ask that question. My eyes welled up as she asked. I’ve been bottling the tears since we got back from the hospital, but the question just triggered it.
“Truth be told, I’m seriously hurting inside,” I replied as I covered my face with my arm.
“I totally understand how you feel. I don’t know if I ever told you before, but I was also rejected by my mate when I turned 18. Your father wasn’t my first mate. It’s a little bit complicated.”
My jaw dropped as soon as I heard her say that. I never thought for once that she went through the same thing. She never once mentioned it.
She went on, “As you can see, I’m doing very well. Your father is an amazing man; he helped me through the pains and still stands by me up till now. I’m glad my mate rejected me; my life would have been a living hell.”
Her words comforted me and gave me hope. Knowing my mother went through the same thing, I was determined to pull through as well.
“You can go to your room now, darling,” she said.
“Not yet, I will assist you here before going up,” I insisted.
“You need to rest well. You are still weak. I can’t watch you stress yourself,” she said.
“I’m strong enough, and you know it. Why else would you ask me to assist you in the first place?” I asked without budging.
She sighed and said, “Okay… okay, you never take no for an answer,” she smiled and pressed me lightly on the cheek.
“Since you insist, you’ll do the dishes alone then return to your room.” I smiled back at her and nodded.
I plugged in my headphones while I was washing the dishes and played one of my favorite songs by John Carter, “A New Day.” I sang out loudly in an attempt to get rid of my thoughts, and it seemed to be working.
My mother tapped me to get my attention since I didn’t hear her call me.
“Yes, Mom?” I responded.
“Someone’s at the door. Go and check who it is,” she said.
I had to increase my pace since the person kept banging the door over and over again.
As I opened the door to check who it was, my face lit up, and I screamed, “What!?”
