EPISODE 1
AUDRA “Congratulations, Mrs. Memphis, you are four weeks pregnant.” The Doctor at the hospital I had visited for a medical examination had announced it to me with a smile on his face. I had sat there for a few seconds, staring into space while my worst fears played out for me. “Mrs. Memphis?” The woman had called when I had said nothing, snapping her fingers right in front of me to get me to talk to her or something. I had said nothing when I blinked and stared back at her. For a few more seconds, my brain refused to comprehend her statement. I was pregnant. Pregnant. I was carrying the child, the heir to the Memphis dynasty. My hand had immediately found my tummy when the whole thing dawned on me and I sat there, running my tummy while trying to blink back the tears forming in my eyes. The female Doctor had failed to comprehend what was going on and why I had suddenly gotten quiet and when she tried to pry, I had smiled softly at her while begging her to please let the news be between us as I wasn't ready to inform my husband about it. “Please, Doctor. I'm begging you. I know you are loyal to Rowan because he is your childhood friend and as a family doctor, it's your duty to report to him on whatever things you come across. I know that which is why I'm begging you, pleading with you to please keep this a secret between us. I don't want him to know yet. I will tell him at my own time.” I had grabbed her fingers while I pleaded with her to please hold on and not let my worst fear come to play just yet. If he didn't know then I could pretend that it didn't exist. “But why?” Doctor Dakota had asked, brows snapping together in confusion as they furrowed at me. I heaved a sigh as I thought about what she had asked. Was it that hard to keep a patient’s private information? Wasn't that against the medical code or something? But I knew she wouldn't understand and I had to give her a reason. So, I chuckled wryly as I let go of her fingers. “I just need time to process it all. It came as a stunning process. We weren't even trying for a child or children.” I managed a smile at her because that was all I was capable of. Doctor Dakota had smiled then while nodding her head in understanding at me. It was probably at that moment that I was very much grateful that she was a female. She should have a better understanding of what I was going through. I meant, only the part I wanted and needed her to see. “Of course, Audra. I understand. It can be very overwhelming and you can take all the time you need to process the information.” She had smiled before taking her seat in front of me. That was all the confirmation I needed to hear from her before getting to my feet to leave. Now, I was sitting at this cute and cozy cafe I had found on my way home thinking about my situation while trying hard not to panic about it. Any other woman in my shoes, especially a married woman would be pleased to finally be carrying the child of the man she was married to. The man she loved but my case was different. The situation between I and Rowan’s marriage was very much different. Rowan Memphis, my husband had saved me from a ghastly accident almost two years ago. After spending a few weeks at the hospital being attended to by the Doctors and specialists he had employed for me, I had woken up from coma feeling immensely grateful for his help. If he had been a minute late to helping me, I wouldn't have survived the accident. Feeling like I owed him my life, I had begged him to let me pay him back for rescuing me and paying for all my medical bills which I definitely wouldn't have been able to afford if I had been asked to pay back. Rowan had insisted that he didn't need anything from me and had asked that I went my way. But then he came back two weeks later to ask me to marry him as a favor for helping me when I needed him. I hadn't even known this man or anything about him yet I had been very eager to put him out of his misery and married. Plus, he was very handsome and a good catch. So, we had gotten married after his grandmother whom he absolutely adored gave us his blessings. I learned later that the only reason why my husband had married me was to grant his grandmother's dying wish to see him get married and have a child. That was why Rowan married me. He hadn't married me because I was attractive to him or anything but just because I had been very easy and eager to repay him for his help. Unfortunately, Grandmother Rosetta died a month after we got married and Rowan had made me sign a contract stating that I wouldn't get pregnant for him or beat him a child. As much as it had hurt me to think of any of that, I had agreed with him because it was what he wanted. Now, I was freaking out at this restaurant about being pregnant while the snacks I had ordered got cold. “Madam, are you alright?” I flinched when someone touched me. Blinking back the tears threatening to spill, I turned my head toward the waitress that had attended to me when I arrived. She looked concerned for me and uncomfortable like she was afraid that she was prying. “Y-yes,” I stuttered, nodding. “Erm, do you want to order something else? Perhaps, you don't like our donuts?” she asked, pointing at the glazed donuts I had ordered for myself when I arrived. But what she failed to mention was that I hadn't even taken a bite of it. Swallowing, I picked up the banana smoothie I had ordered which was exactly what I felt like taking and took a sip of it. “Could you pack them up in a take out box, please?” I asked as I picked up my purse and took out some notes to tip her with. She nodded appreciatively while smiling at me before she got to work. When she returned with my order, I got on my feet, received my order and walked out of the cafe. I had no other choice. There was nothing I could do. I would have to tell Rowan about what had happened. It wasn't like I had done it on purpose. I hadn't wanted to get pregnant but it had happened. The first and only time Rowan had touched me, I had pregnancy to show for it. I got into the car he had gotten me to keep up with the public’s eye and drove straight to the mansion. I was not expecting to see Rowan at the house since he usually arrived home late from work which was why I was surprised to see the car he had driven out in the morning, parked halfway in front of the mansion. I swallowed as I picked up my bag and alighted from the car before shutting the door quietly. Looking around the building, I ignored the men standing guards at the corners of the house before I made my way in. I dropped my bag on the couch, swallowed and grabbed the take out box before I climbed the stairs up to the bedrooms. Rowan and I didn't share the same room. As far as he was concerned, he only married me to fulfill his grandmother's dying wish. He wouldn't touch me or look at me. He wouldn't even address me as his wife. I was…Nothing to him. “Rowan,” I called as I knocked on the door of his bedroom for the third time. When I didn't get any reply after knocking for a few more seconds, I decided to try out his home office. It was his second most favorite place in the house. The door was opened so I stopped by it. He was standing in the room, searching for something on his shelf. “Rowan,” I called gently while my heart started to hammer in my chest. My husband turned toward me, his face blank as always and his eyes cold. He was always cold toward me. His eyes did a slow perusal of my frame right from the floral dress I had on to how my hair was packed, my heels and even the take out box in my hands. Finally, he stopped his perusal on my neck down to my shoulder slope which was slightly open due to the neckline of my dress. Rowan eyes the large scar on there which I had suffered from the fatal accident I had a while back. The Doctors had said it was permanent. I swallowed and immediately adjusted my dress to cover up that part of me, hating the look of disgust on my husband's face. He had never failed to show his irritation at the scar on my body. “Do you need me to do anything for you? Anything to eat or drink?” I asked, not meeting his gaze. “I also got donuts if you want them. Or I could bake you fresh ones if you are interested.” I offered, fidgeting as I always did in his presence. He continued to stare at me without a word, making me very uncomfortable. Just when I thought he was going to dismiss me with a wave of his hand, Rowan opened his mouth and crushed me on the spot. “The on ly thing you can do for me is to sign these divorce papers I have for you, Audra.”
