Chapter 6: The Weight of Memories

687 Words
Evelyn's POV The fire crackled softly in the hearth, its warmth failing to ease the chill that settled in my bones. Lily was still napping upstairs, her soft snores barely audible over the silence of the cabin. I sat on the couch, clutching a steaming mug of tea, my thoughts racing. Ethan’s words replayed in my mind, each one peeling back layers of wounds I thought had healed. “I never stopped caring.” The admission felt like both a balm and a dagger. For years, I had convinced myself that Ethan’s absence was proof of his indifference. Hearing otherwise brought back a flood of memories—his laughter, his touch, the way he used to look at me like I was his entire world. But those memories were tangled with pain, with the nights I cried myself to sleep wondering why I wasn’t enough to make him stay. I took a shaky breath, trying to push the thoughts away. This wasn’t just about me anymore. Lily came first. Always. A knock at the door startled me, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts. My heart raced as I set the mug down and moved to answer it. “Ryan,” I said, exhaling a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. He stepped inside, brushing snow off his jacket. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” “Close enough,” I muttered, closing the door behind him. Ryan studied me, his expression shifting to concern. “Let me guess. Ethan?” I nodded, sinking back onto the couch. Ryan joined me, his brow furrowed. “What did he want?” he asked. “To talk. To explain.” I let out a bitter laugh. “Apparently, he thinks he made a mistake by leaving.” Ryan scoffed. “You don’t seriously believe him, do you?” “I don’t know what to believe,” I admitted, rubbing my temples. “Part of me wants to slam the door in his face and never look back. But another part... another part wants to hear him out.” Ryan frowned. “Evelyn, you’ve worked so hard to build a life for yourself and Lily. Don’t let him ruin that.” “I’m not,” I said quickly. “But... what if he’s telling the truth? What if he really does regret it?” “And what if he doesn’t?” Ryan countered. “What if he’s just saying what he thinks you want to hear?” I sighed, leaning back against the couch. “I don’t know, Ryan. I just... I don’t know.” He reached out, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Whatever you decide, just remember that you don’t owe him anything. You’ve already proven that you’re stronger without him.” I nodded, grateful for his support but still feeling the weight of uncertainty pressing down on me. Ethan’s POV The wind bit at my face as I stood outside the cabin, staring at the door I had just walked away from. I should have left, should have gotten in my car and driven back to the hotel. But my feet wouldn’t move. Seeing Evelyn again had shaken me more than I cared to admit. She was just as beautiful as I remembered, but there was something different about her now—a strength, a determination that hadn’t been there before. I couldn’t blame her for being angry, for questioning my motives. If the roles were reversed, I wasn’t sure I’d be as composed as she was. I glanced up at the window where a soft light glowed. Somewhere inside, Evelyn was wrestling with her thoughts, and all I could do was hope that she’d find room in her heart to let me in again. For now, I’d give her the space she needed. But I wasn’t going to give up. Not this time. I turned and walked toward my car, the crunch of snow under my boots the only sound in the stillness of the woods. This time, I was determined to prove to Evelyn that I was worth a second chance.
