Evelyn's POV
The warmth of the cabin greeted me as I closed the door behind me, but it did little to ease the tension knotting my stomach. Ethan Blackwood. I hadn’t expected to see him again, and certainly not here. Not after everything that had happened.
Lily’s soft giggles brought me back to the present. I turned toward the sound and found her standing at the entrance to the small living room, her eyes wide with curiosity.
“Mommy, who was that man outside?” she asked innocently, her tiny hands clutching her stuffed bunny to her chest.
I forced a smile, though the discomfort in my chest hadn’t eased. “Just an old friend, sweetie. Don’t worry about him.”
Lily nodded, though I could tell she was still curious. Her bright eyes had a way of reading me like no one else.
I tried to shake off the encounter, but the image of Ethan standing there, so effortlessly composed, lingered in my mind. He was different now—more mature, more confident, and infinitely more dangerous. He was the kind of man I had spent years trying to forget.
“Let’s get you settled for the night,” I said, trying to divert my thoughts. I led Lily to the small bedroom at the back of the cabin, where a single bed was covered with a cozy quilt. She climbed in without protest, pulling the covers up to her chin.
As I tucked her in, I kissed her forehead. “Goodnight, my love. Sweet dreams.”
“Goodnight, Mommy,” she mumbled, already drifting off.
I lingered for a moment longer, watching her peaceful sleep, but the noise outside, the crunch of boots in the snow, caught my attention. My thoughts returned to Ethan. He hadn’t looked like he was planning to leave anytime soon.
I stepped into the kitchen, needing a moment to think. I opened the cupboard and reached for a mug, filling it with hot water before adding a tea bag. My hands were trembling slightly, though I didn’t know why. It wasn’t like I hadn’t seen him before—he was the same person, after all. But something about his presence had unsettled me.
The kettle whistled, and I poured the hot water, allowing the tea to steep as I stared out of the small window overlooking the snowy landscape. It was peaceful here, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It should have been the perfect place to heal, to let go of everything that had happened. But Ethan’s unexpected arrival threatened to disrupt the fragile peace I had been holding onto.
I took a deep breath and reached for my phone, deciding to distract myself with something familiar. But as soon as I unlocked it, a notification popped up.
Ethan Blackwood has sent you a message.
My pulse quickened. I hadn’t given him my number, yet there it was. A message from him. I hesitated for a moment, then swiped the notification open.
“I know it’s been a long time, but I meant what I said. If you need anything, I’m here. Don’t hesitate to reach out.”
I stared at the words for a moment, the weight of them sinking in. Why was he doing this? Why was he reaching out now, after all these years?
My fingers hovered over the keyboard, but no words came. I had never been good at asking for help, especially from someone like Ethan. But I couldn’t deny the strange sense of relief that washed over me at the thought that he was offering it.
I set the phone down with a sigh, my mind spinning.
As if on cue, a knock on the door echoed through the cabin. I froze. My breath caught in my throat.
It couldn’t be him again.
I walked cautiously to the door, my heart racing. When I opened it, I was met with the familiar face of my brother, Ryan.
“Hey, sis,” he said, offering a warm smile. “How’s everything going?”
“Ryan, thank God,” I sighed, stepping aside to let him in. “It’s been a crazy night.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow as he entered, taking in the cozy atmosphere of the cabin. “You’re telling me. I had no idea you’d be back in town. What’s with all the secrecy?”
“I didn’t want to make a fuss,” I said, closing the door behind him. “I just needed some time away. After everything... the divorce, the city, I thought coming here would help me clear my head.”
Ryan nodded, his face softening with understanding. “You’ve been through a lot, Evie. And I get it. But are you sure this is the right place? I mean, you could’ve stayed with me.”
I shook my head. “This place feels... safe. And I want to give Lily a sense of normalcy. A chance to grow up without all the chaos.”
Ryan studied me carefully, but before he could say anything more, I caught a flicker of movement outside the window. My breath caught in my throat once again.
“Is he still here?” Ryan asked, following my gaze toward the driveway.
I didn’t need to say anything. Ethan’s sleek black car was parked just beyond the trees, the silhouette of the man standing beside it clear in the moonlight.
“Ethan?” Ryan’s tone was sharp. “What’s he doing here?”
“I don’t know,” I murmured. “But I think I need to figure it out.”
Ryan’s eyes narrowed as he looked at me. “Be careful, Evie. He’s not the same person you once knew.”
I swallowed, nodding slowly. “I know.”
But the truth was, I wasn’t sure if I could keep my distance from Ethan. Not when he kept appearing in my life at the most unexpected times.
And certainly not when I felt this strange pull toward him.
