CHAPTER 14 Michael wasn’t sure how he got home. The closing of the door behind him seemed to snap him awake. His eyes told him nothing had changed. His mind said everything had. In the dim light, the reflection of his face in the hall mirror looked no different. Was there a faint extra sheen on the skin of his arms? He couldn’t be certain. He could remember himself rising from the waters of the lake and dazedly beginning the walk home. The night was dark—hadn’t he brought a flashlight with him?
