This time, Michael was willing to let the helicopter lower him into the sea. He wasn’t sure his fragile body could stand much of an impact.
Sakiko had been allowed to come along. Together they’d looked down in dismay upon an ocean covered with Navy ships that a helicopter crewwoman identified for them. Because they were only a few dozen miles from shore, there was no need for an aircraft carrier, but a hard-charging cruiser took its place. Michael counted three destroyers and four other ships of unusual shapes that the crewwoman called littoral combat vessels, since they were used for warfare close to shore. She also revealed that a submarine lurked somewhere beneath the waves.
The navy had told the media that it was an exercise, but to Michael the deadly intent was palpable
