The Girl Who Came Back

888 Words
The storm raged throughout the night, Sarah barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the shadow standing among the trees. Watching. Waiting. By morning, the rain had stopped, but the unease remained. Sunlight streamed through her bedroom window, illuminating a room that looked almost exactly as it had five years ago. The same bookshelf. The same faded photographs. The same memories she had spent years trying to escape. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Come in. The door opened. Linda stepped inside carrying a mug of coffee. You should eat something. Sarah sat up. "What happened after I went upstairs?" Her mother hesitated. A bad sign. Robert had left shortly after the power returned. No explanations. No answers. Just more questions. Linda handed her the coffee. "Nothing happened." Sarah raised an eyebrow. "You're lying." A flicker of guilt crossed Linda's face. Before Sarah could push further, another voice echoed from downstairs. "Sarah!" A familiar voice. Female. Bright. Energetic. Sarah froze. Then her eyes widened. Emma. Without thinking, she jumped out of bed and hurried downstairs. The front door burst open at the same moment. Emma Collins practically launched herself into Sarah's arms. "Oh my God!" Sarah laughed for the first time since returning. The hug nearly knocked her backward. Good to see you too. Emma pulled away. Her blonde hair was longer than Sarah remembered. Her smile hadn't changed at all. Neither had her habit of talking too much. You disappeared for five years. I know. You missed birthdays. I know. You missed Christmas. I know. You even missed my graduation. Sarah winced. Emma folded her arms dramatically. I'm still offended. Despite everything, Sarah smiled. Being around Emma felt normal. Comforting. Safe. For a brief moment, the weight on her chest eased. Then Emma's smile faded. He's seen you, hasn't he? Sarah immediately knew who she meant. James. She nodded. Emma groaned. Oh, this is going to be messy. Sarah rolled her eyes. It wasn't like that. Emma stared at her. Then burst out laughing. You still love him. The statement hit harder than expected. Sarah looked away. Silence answered the question. Emma's expression softened. I knew it. Sarah sighed. Emma... You do. It doesn't matter. Emma frowned. Of course it matters. No. Sarah's voice became quieter. It ended years ago. The words sounded hollow. Even to her. Emma studied her carefully. Then she said something Sarah wasn't prepared to hear. "It never ended for him." Sarah's heart stumbled. What? Emma immediately looked regretful. Like she'd revealed too much. What do you mean? Nothing. Emma. Her cousin sighed heavily. Fine. She sat down at the kitchen table. "You know he never dated anyone seriously after you left? Sarah froze. The room suddenly felt warmer. What? Emma nodded. There were a few girls. The words stung unexpectedly. But Emma continued. None of them lasted. Sarah stared. Her pulse quickened. The idea shouldn't matter. And yet it did. Far more than she wanted to admit. Before she could respond, her phone vibrated. An unknown number appeared on the screen. Sarah frowned. Normally she would've ignored it. Instead, something told her to answer. Hello? Silence. Static. Then a female voice, Soft , Shaky and Familiar. Sarah? Every muscle in her body locked. No. It couldn't be. Her heart started pounding. Grace? A sharp intake of breath echoed through the line. For several seconds, neither woman spoke. Five years of silence hanging between them. Finally Grace spoke. We need to talk. Sarah's grip tightened around the phone. Questions flooded her mind. Where had Grace been? Why had she left? Why was she back now? Most importantly What did she know? When? Grace hesitated. Today. Something about her voice sounded wrong. Fear. Panic. Urgency. Sarah exchanged a glance with Emma. Even her cousin looked concerned. Where are you? Another pause. Then Grace whispered, Somewhere safe. The answer made Sarah's skin crawl. Safe? Safe from what? Or from who? Grace, Don't tell anyone we're meeting. Sarah froze. What? Especially not your mother. The warning hit like a lightning strike. What are you talking about? Grace's breathing became uneven. As though she was terrified. Please. For the first time, Sarah heard genuine desperation in her voice. You need to trust me. Trust. The word felt almost ironic. Trust had been shattered years ago. Yet somehow Sarah found herself saying, Okay. Grace exhaled. Relief. Meet me at the old lighthouse at six. The lighthouse. A place filled with memories. A place Sarah hadn't visited since the night everything changed. Fear settled heavily inside her chest. Grace, the line went dead. Sarah slowly lowered the phone. The kitchen was silent. Emma stared at her. What happened? Sarah looked toward the window. Beyond the glass, the ocean shimmered beneath the morning sun. Beautiful. Peaceful. Deceptive. Because deep down she knew something terrible was coming. Grace wants to meet. Emma's expression immediately darkened. That's not good. No. Sarah swallowed hard. It wasn't. Because after five years of silence, Grace Donovan had returned carrying secrets. And whatever those secrets were... They were important enough to make her afraid. Very afraid. As Sarah stared toward the distant coastline, a chilling realization settled over her. Tonight could finally reveal the truth about the past. Or destroy everything she thought she knew. Including the man she had never stopped loving.
