The Road Back
Sarah Mitchell gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white. The sign appeared through the windshield just as the sun began its slow descent toward the horizon. WELCOME TO SEABROOK. The words hit her like a punch to the chest. Five years. Five years since she had driven away from this town in the middle of the night with tears blurring her vision and a broken heart she never managed to piece back together. Five years since she had promised herself she would never return. Yet here she was. The ocean breeze drifted through the cracked window, carrying a scent she remembered too well saltwater, pine trees, and memories she had spent years trying to bury. Sarah swallowed hard. "Just a few weeks," she whispered to herself. A few weeks. That was all She would help her mother, settle whatever family matter had dragged her back here, and leave. Simple. At least, that's what she kept telling herself. Her phone buzzed. The screen lit up with Rachel Kim's name. Sarah hesitated before answering. Tell me you've already turned around, Rachel said immediately, despite herself, Sarah laughed. Nice to hear your voice too. I'm serious. Are you in town yet? Sarah glanced at the welcome sign disappearing in her rearview mirror. Just crossed the border. A dramatic groan echoed through the speaker. God help us all. Sarah smiled. For the first time all day, some of the tension eased from her shoulders. Rachel had always had that effect on her. "I'll survive. "That's not what I'm worried about." Sarah's smile faded. Neither of them needed to say his name. The silence said it for them. James. Rachel sighed. You know everyone still talks about you, right? Sarah's stomach twisted. "I don't care what people say." "That's a lie." Maybe it was. The truth was she cared too much. She cared about the whispers. The judgment. The questions. Most of all, she cared about facing the one person she never wanted to see again. Or perhaps... The one person she desperately wanted to see. "Rachel" "I'm just saying be prepared." Sarah tightened her grip on the wheel. "I'm not here for him." The words sounded convincing enough. Unfortunately, her heart didn't believe them. Rachel was quiet for a moment. Then she said softly, "What if he never stopped waiting?" Sarah's breath caught. Immediately, memories flooded her mind. A summer night. A stolen kiss beneath fireworks. Blue eyes filled with promises. A future they had planned together. And the devastating moment she destroyed it all. "Goodbye, Rachel." Before her friend could respond, Sarah ended the call. The silence returned. Only this time it felt heavier. Painfully so. The closer she got to town, the harder it became to breathe. Every corner held a memory. Every street reminded her of a version of herself she no longer recognized. By the time she reached her mother's house, dusk had settled over Seabrook. The familiar white cottage stood exactly as she remembered. The flower garden. The wooden porch. The rocking chair Linda Mitchell loved. Sarah parked and stared. A strange ache settled in her chest. Home. The word felt foreign. Before she could gather her thoughts, the front door burst open. "Sarah!" Linda Mitchell practically ran down the steps. Sarah barely had time to open the car door before her mother pulled her into a tight embrace. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Years of distance disappeared beneath tears and relief. "Oh, sweetheart. Sarah closed her eyes. "It's good to see you too, Mom. Linda stepped back, wiping at her eyes. "You look tired." "I drove six hours." "Then come inside." Sarah smiled weakly. The warmth of the house greeted her instantly. Everything looked the same. The photographs. The furniture. The scent of cinnamon and coffee. It should have felt comforting. Instead, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. A reminder of everything she had lost. Dinner passed quietly. Linda spoke about neighbors and town gossip while Sarah listened. But something felt off. Her mother seemed nervous. Distracted. Like she was hiding something. Finally, Sarah set down her fork. "Okay." Linda blinked. "Okay what?" "You didn't ask me to drive all the way here because you missed me." A shadow crossed Linda's face. The reaction confirmed Sarah's suspicion. "What happened?" Linda looked away. For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking clock on the wall. Then she said quietly, "There's something you need to know." Sarah's pulse quickened. "What?" Before Linda could answer, a knock sounded at the front door. Both women froze. The interruption couldn't have come at a worse time. Linda stood. "I'll get it." Sarah watched her walk away. A strange feeling settled over her. Unease. Anticipation. Fear. She wasn't sure. Then she heard a familiar male voice from the doorway. Deep. Warm. Dangerously familiar. Every muscle in her body locked. No. Her heart immediately recognized him. Even after five years. Even after all this time. James O'Connor. Sarah slowly rose from her chair. Her pulse thundered in her ears. She hadn't planned for this. She hadn't prepared herself. Not tonight. Not yet. Footsteps approached. Then he appeared in the dining room doorway. For one suspended moment, neither of them moved. James looked exactly like the memories she had spent years trying to forget. Only better. Older. Stronger. More devastatingly handsome than she remembered. His blue eyes widened. Shock flashed across his face. Then something else. Something far more dangerous. Emotion. Raw and unguarded. Sarah couldn't breathe. The room seemed to shrink around them. Five years disappeared in an instant. Every goodbye. Every heartbreak. Every unanswered question. Still there. Still alive. Still between them. James stared at her. His voice was barely above a whisper. "Sarah?" Her heart shattered all over again. And for the first time since returning home, she realized one terrifying truth. Coming back to Seabrook had been a mistake. Because she had never stopped loving him. And judging by the look in his eyes... Neither had he.
