The shadows of willow springs

Logan walked through the doors of Willow Springs High School, his eyes scanning the crowd that filled the halls. Laughter and joy was all he heard, but all he felt was a sharp hunger, all he smelled was the scent of blood mixed in with the fresh autumn air. The town of Willow Springs was small and quiet, perfect for someone like him, who wanted to blend in and not draw attention. As a 17 year old junior, he had learned how to blend in over the decades. His past was long and filled with secrets, but here, in this town, he had the chance to star over. "Logan, right" a voice called from behind him, pulling him from his thoughts. He turned to see a group of students approaching. There was a girl at the front, blonde hair in waves around her shoulders, her blue eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Yeah that's me," he replied, offering a small smirk. "I'm Ansley," she said with a friendly smile. "This is Payton, Emma, and Julie." She pointed to the others in the little group, each offering a wave and smile. "We were just heading to the cafeteria, wanna join us?" Logan hesitated for a moment, but then, with a shrug, he decided it was easier to be social then alone. "Sure." As they walked together through the halls, Logan observed all of them. Payton, tall with dark hair and a confident, yet slightly awkward demeanor, seemed to have his eyes glued to Ansley at all times. Emma, with her vibrant red hair and infectious energy, laughed at something Julie said, her cheerleader energy unmistakable. Julie, the quiet one, smiled softly and listened to the conversation with a calmness that intruigued Logan. "So what brings you to Willow Springs?" Emma asked, her voice laced with genuine curiosity. Logan paused for a moment before answering, choosing his words carefully. He couldn't admit he's been just about everywhere, always on the run. "My family moved here recently. Looking for a fresh start , I guess." "Sounds like a big change," Julie said, her tone gentle. "Are you settling in okay?" Logan nodded. "Yeah, I think so." They found a table and sat down. Payton was already taking animatedly to Ansley, clearly trying to impress her, thought Logan noticed the subtle tension in his posture, the way he always positioned himself close to her, as if he were afraid of letting her slip away. Ansley, however, didn't seem to notice. She laughed easily, a sound that seemed to echo in Logan's chest, tugging at something deep inside him. He quickly looked away. The day passed in a blur of classes and introductions. Logan tried to keep his distance, careful not to reveal too much about himself. He wasn't used to being surrounded by so many people. Most of his existence had been spent alone, wandering from one place to another, never staying long enough to form relationships. By the end of the school day, Logan found himself standing at his locker, staring into the mirror that was mounted on the inside of the door. He hadn't eaten in over 24 hours. The hunger was getting harder to ignore. Just then, Ansley appeared next to him, surprising him. "Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out later? After practice?" I mean … yeah I'd like that." "Great, we're all meeting up at the park," she said with a smile, and then noticing his hesitation, she added "Don't worry, nothing fancy, just a few of us kicking back." He nodded, trying to ignore the strange flutter in his chest.
