Chapter 1. New Beginning
The flight attendant's voice echoed through the cabin, announcing their arrival at Naha Airport. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Naha Airport in Okinawa. The local time is 1 PM, and the weather is nice and mostly cloudy. We hope you enjoyed your flight with us. Thank you for flying with Japan Airlines, and we look forward to seeing you again soon." Kibin awoke from his sleep, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. He quickly sat up in his seat, adjusting his glasses and taking a deep breath. As he got up, he felt the weight of his journey and the new chapter that awaited him. Exiting the airplane, the warm Okinawan air greeted him, a stark contrast to the air-conditioned cabin. He proceeded directly to the luggage area, eager to retrieve his bags and begin his adventure. As Kibin walked through the departure area, he couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of Okinawa Airport. It was far more impressive and spacious than NAIA Airport in the Philippines. Lost in his thoughts, he didn't notice an airport staff member pushing a cart of luggage right towards him. The cart bumped into his right foot, throwing him off balance and nearly causing him to fall. In an instant, Kibin twisted his body to fall on his back, but just as he braced for impact, a pair of strong arms caught him from behind. He found himself cradled in the arms of a stranger, his head resting against the man's chest. Due to the forceful grab, Kibin's glasses slipped off, but his hoodie and facemask stayed on. Therefore, the man couldn't see the array of emotions that crossed his face when it pressed against his chest. The slight tension in his muscles, the fleeting shock in his eyes, and the blush that crept up beneath the mask—all hidden away, leaving the moment a private but intense memory for him alone. "Are you alright?" the man asked, his voice calm and reassuring. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for catching me," Kibin replied, his voice filled with gratitude. As soon as Kibin regained his footing, the stranger quickly walked away. A fellow passenger, who witnessed the incident, picked up Kibin's fallen glasses and handed them to him. "Here you go," the passenger said kindly. "Thank you," Kibin responded, hurriedly putting on his glasses, hoping to catch a glimpse of his rescuer. However, the man had already turned his back and was walking away, leaving Kibin without a clear view of his face. The guy typically wore a light blue t-shirt with a subtle message on it, paired with a light grey zip-up hoodie that read "Love, Japan." Kibin couldn't shake off the feeling of mystery and intrigue surrounding the stranger who had saved him. As he made his way to the exit, his mind replayed the brief yet significant encounter. Who was that man? Why did he help him so quickly and then disappear without a trace? The thoughts of the stranger lingered in Kibin's mind as he stepped out into the bustling city of Okinawa. The sun was gently setting, casting a golden hue over the streets filled with cherry blossoms. The beauty of his surroundings contrasted sharply with the turmoil of emotions within him. It was the beginning of a new journey, filled with uncertainty and the promise of unexpected connections. Kibin arrived at Okinawa University with a sense of determination and a hint of trepidation. He had an appointment with Mr. Takeshi Sato in the Office of International Affairs, where Mr. Sato was responsible for assisting transfer students with accommodation, documents, and scholarship matters. This included housing arrangements, visa and residence permit applications, and information about scholarships. Kibin's journey had been long, but he was eager to ensure everything was in order before classes began on Monday. Mr. Sato, a kind and efficient staff member, quickly reviewed all of Kibin's documents. "Everything looks good, Kibin. You're all set for your first day," Mr. Sato said with a reassuring smile. "Thank you so much, Mr. Sato. You've been a tremendous help," Kibin responded, relief evident in his voice. "Don't mention it. Now, about your accommodation—because you received a full scholarship funded by the University itself, your accommodation is free. The University has a boarding house specifically for transfer students and scholars like you. We'll go there to find you a room," Mr. Sato explained. "That's great, thank you! I just arrived today from the Philippines, and this is my first time in Japan, so I'm not familiar with the area," Kibin admitted. "Don't worry, you'll get to know the place. The people here are friendly, and our campus is safe and secure," Mr. Sato reassured him. "I agree; the campus is huge and the buildings are beautiful. I'm really excited to start," Kibin said cheerfully. "That's nice to hear. By the way, the boarding house is located just outside the University campus, about a 10-minute walk away. It has a beautiful view with cherry blossom trees around. There's also a restaurant right across the boarding house and grocery stores nearby," Mr. Sato added. "Wow, having grocery stores and a restaurant so close is really convenient. Everything is practically here, making it easier for students," Kibin agreed. Mr. Sato smiled, glad to see Kibin's enthusiasm and readiness to start his new journey. Upon arriving at the boarding house, Kibin and Mr. Sato immediately began searching for an available room. They quickly found one on the first floor of the building. The building itself was impressive, with four floors and 16 rooms per floor. It was sturdily built and painted a soothing blue, surrounded by trees, and even had a parking lot for students with cars. Mr. Sato soon located a suitable room and retrieved the key from the lady managing the building. The room was impressive—a spacious single with a mini kitchen, a small table near the sink, and a compact refrigerator. The toilet was roomy, clean, and equipped with a shower. A study table was thoughtfully placed at the end of the bed. Despite being a studio type, the room felt bright and airy. "This will be your room. Here's a copy of the key for you," Mr. Sato said, handing over the key. "Thank you, Mr. Sato. The room is really nice," Kibin responded, clearly pleased. "I'm glad you like it," Mr. Sato replied, smiling. Mr. Sato then took out an envelope from his attaché case and handed it to Kibin. "Inside this envelope are the contract and the terms and conditions of your scholarship. Read them carefully, okay? If you have any questions, don't hesitate to come to my office on Monday so I can explain everything," Mr. Sato instructed. "Yes, Mr. Sato, I will read these documents. Thank you very much for your assistance. You've been very helpful," Kibin said gratefully. "Alright then. Everything is in order, and there are no more issues with your scholarship papers. Focus on your studies and don't waste this amazing opportunity. Work hard to achieve your dreams. I'll be heading home now. I hope you enjoy your stay here," Mr. Sato said as he prepared to leave. "Thank you again, Mr. Sato. Have a safe trip home," Kibin called after him. After Mr. Sato left, Kibin stepped out of his room. As it was nearing six in the evening, he decided to visit a nearby grocery store to buy some instant noodles and bread for dinner. His journey in Japan was just beginning, and he felt a mix of excitement and anticipation for what lay ahead. Exhausted from the journey, Kibin felt a wave of fatigue and sleepiness wash over him. He lay down on his bed to rest and took the envelope from the study table. Opening it, he began reading through the scholarship contract, its terms, and conditions. Several sections caught his attention. Section 4 stated that he must maintain an "A" grade to continue receiving the scholarship. There should be no records of bullying or harassment, and scholars were expected to promote integrity and respect among fellow students, teachers, and the entire Okinawa University community. Section 8 detailed the full scholarship benefits from the first year of college until graduation. This included free accommodation, waived school fees, and a monthly monetary allowance of 250,000 Japanese yen. The conditions emphasized maintaining a high grade and good moral character, with no incidents of bullying or harassment within the campus, among other applicable terms. As he read, the weight of the long journey and the excitement of the day took their toll. Kibin fell asleep, still holding the scholarship contract, his dreams filled with thoughts of the new life and opportunities awaiting him in Okinawa. ********************* Different noises reached Kibin's ears, gradually pulling him from the depths of his slumber. The rumble of buses, car horns, and the lively chatter and laughter of people blended together, forming a symphony of the city. Kibin gently rubbed his eyes, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar sounds. His home in the countryside of the Philippines was surrounded by tranquil woods, far from any road, and such noise was unheard of there. Suddenly, his eyes widened with realization—he was in Japan now. A mix of excitement and nervousness flooded him. He quickly jumped out of bed, put on his glasses, and checked the time on his phone. It was almost 8 AM. Exhausted from his travels, he had slept for more than ten hours. Feeling a blend of anticipation and urgency, Kibin prepared to start his first full day in this vibrant new environment. He made his way to the bathroom to take a shower. As he turned on the faucet, water droplets emerged like tiny, crystalline pearls racing to meet his skin. The water was cold, although the shower had a heater. He chose to embrace the cold water, reminiscent of the cool streams back in his rural hometown. The chill was refreshing, effectively washing away the fatigue and stress from his body. After his invigorating shower, Kibin opened his suitcase and grabbed some clothes. He opted for a simple blue t-shirt and gray jogging pants. Even in casual attire, it was clear that the clothes suited him well. Standing at 5'5", Kibin was of average height for Filipinos. His well-defined nose and attractive lips, combined with a muscular frame from helping his father with farming, gave him a rugged yet appealing look. His skin, tanned by the sun, reflected his outdoor lifestyle. Changing into his clothes, Kibin immediately stepped out of his room and headed to the counter area to speak with the woman in charge of the building. Mr. Sato had mentioned that he needed to talk to her to sign some papers regarding his stay at the boarding house. Since there was free Wi-Fi, he also asked her for the password. The woman at the counter greeted him warmly. "Good morning! You must be Kibin. Mr. Sato told me you'd be coming to sign some papers," she said with a friendly smile. "Yes, that's right. I also wanted to ask for the Wi-Fi password," Kibin replied. "Of course, here you go," she said, handing him a piece of paper with the password written on it. "Just sign these documents, and you'll be all set." Once he had signed the documents and thanked the woman, Kibin decided to go to the rooftop of the building. From there, he could take in the breathtaking view of the area. As he reached the top, he marveled at how neat and beautiful everything looked. Right in front of the building was an intersection with a traffic light and pedestrian lanes, beside which stood a restaurant. To the right, there was a small but charming park equipped with playgrounds, swings, seesaws, and benches. Adjacent to the park was an eye clinic named Maeda's Eye Clinic, and behind it, a large, modern house, indicating that the owner was quite wealthy. On the other side of the park was a bustling market, where many people were busy shopping at that hour. Kibin opened the Messenger app on his phone and made a call. "Mom, how are you?" he asked, his voice tinged with both excitement and longing. "We're fine here, son. How are you? Are you doing okay?" his mother replied, her voice filled with concern and love. "Yes, Mom, I'm okay. Actually, it's really beautiful here, and the place where I'm staying is also lovely and free," Kibin explained, trying to convey the wonder of his new surroundings. "That's good to hear. You don't have anything to worry about then. Wait a moment, I'll call your father and siblings so you can talk to them too," his mother said happily. "Rico, Rico, our son's calling! Hurry, he's already in Japan. Come on!" she called out excitedly, and Kibin could see his father and siblings rushing towards the camera on the video call. "Here, talk to our son," she said, handing the phone to his father. "Son, how are you in Japan?" his father asked, his voice brimming with pride and curiosity. "I'm okay, Dad. It's nice here," Kibin replied, though he didn't notice the tears gradually falling from his eyes, as if they had a life of their own, dropping to the rooftop floor. "Why are you crying? Enjoy your time there, son. Your dreams are gradually coming true, and now you can study," his father said, his voice gentle yet firm. "I just miss you all, Dad. I wish you were here with me," Kibin said, his voice cracking with emotion as he sobbed. "As much as we'd love to, son, you know we're just simple folks. I'm thankful that you're smart, kind, and responsible, which is why you got the scholarship. We would have preferred you to study here in our province, but we couldn't afford it. We miss you terribly too. But like us, you need to be strong and fight on. You'll achieve your dreams. We love you very much," his mother said, tears welling up in her eyes. "Yes, Mom. I'll do my best with my studies here, to make my dreams come true, dreams for you, Dad, and my siblings. I love you all very much," Kibin said, his voice full of resolve. "That's the spirit, son. Keep fighting for our dreams," his mother encouraged, a soft smile visible through her tears. "Yes, Mom," Kibin agreed, wiping his tears away. "Alright then, let's stop the crying. We should all be happy. I'll prepare our lunch, and your father will head to the field to plant vegetables. Take care of yourself there," his mother said, her voice filled with warmth and care. "Yes, Mom. You all take care too," Kibin said, ending the call on Messenger. As the call ended, Kibin stood on the rooftop, gazing out at the city that was now his new home. The mix of emotions—homesickness, excitement, determination—swirled within him. He knew this was just the beginning of a challenging yet rewarding journey, and with his family's love and support, he felt ready to embrace whatever lay ahead. ********************* Kibin had always been a brilliant student, with a passion for reading and watching news about government and politics. He was dedicated to studying and understanding societal and global issues. He graduated high school at the top of his class and proved to be an exceptional leader, serving as the SSG President for four consecutive terms. One evening, as he sat with his family, an advertisement on TV caught his attention. It was about the Okinawa University scholarship. Instantly curious, Kibin visited the university's official website to learn about the requirements. The scholarship was open to anyone, regardless of nationality, interested in studying courses like political science, engineering, nursing, and more. It didn't matter if you weren't Japanese; as long as you met the criteria, you could apply. Driven by determination, Kibin prepared his application meticulously. He poured his heart into his personal statement, detailing his dreams and the struggles his family faced. The weeks that followed were a mix of hope and anxiety as he awaited the results. One morning, as he helped his father in the fields, his phone rang. It was a call from the university. Kibin’s heart raced as he answered. "Hello, this is Mr. Takeshi Sato from Okinawa University. Am I speaking with Kibin?" came the voice from the other end. "Yes, this is Kibin. Good morning, Mr. Sato," he replied, his voice trembling with anticipation. "I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected for the full scholarship at Okinawa University. Congratulations!" Mr. Sato announced. Kibin's eyes welled up with tears. "Thank you so much, Mr. Sato! This means everything to me and my family." "We believe in your potential, Kibin. Please make the necessary preparations to join us. We look forward to having you here," Mr. Sato said warmly before hanging up. Kibin stood there, the phone still in his hand, unable to believe the news. He ran to his father, who was working nearby. "Dad, I got the scholarship! I'm going to Okinawa University!" he exclaimed. His father’s eyes filled with pride and joy. "I knew you could do it, son. You've made us all so proud." As the day of his departure approached, Kibin's family gathered to bid him farewell. Kibin reflected on the journey that brought him here. He felt a mix of gratitude and determination. The bustling city around him was a stark contrast to his quiet hometown, but it was filled with endless possibilities. With renewed resolve, Kibin set his sights on the university, ready to embark on this new chapter. He knew the path ahead would be challenging, but he was prepared to face it head-on, fueled by his dreams and the unwavering support of his family.
