EPISODE 1: THE PRICE OF A LEGACY
Rain pounded against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Sterling Tower like distant gunfire. I stood in the middle of the office and tried not to let the silence swallow me whole. Outside, Toronto stretched beneath dark clouds, cold glass towers and endless ambition. Inside, my future sat on a polished mahogany desk. And his name was written all over it. “The terms haven’t changed, Elena.” Silas Thorne’s voice cut through the room. Smooth. Controlled. Dangerous. He didn’t look up from the documents in front of him. Five years. Five years since I had last stood in front of him. Yet somehow, he looked the same. Sharp suit. Calm expression. Eyes that gave nothing away. Only now, he wasn’t just Silas. He was the CEO of Thorne Industries. And I was standing in his office asking for mercy. My eyes dropped to the document on the desk. THE BETRAYAL PACT A ridiculous name. But painfully accurate. My father’s architectural company, the business he spent thirty years building, was collapsing. One scandal after another. Investors pulling away. Projects disappearing overnight. And Silas somehow held the power to stop it. Or destroy what remained. “One year,” I said quietly. “That’s all?” Silas finally looked at me. His grey eyes locked onto mine. “One year.” He folded his hands. “You become my wife publicly.” I didn’t move. He continued. “You attend events. Board meetings. Charity galas. Press appearances.” His expression stayed cold. “You play the perfect wife.” I swallowed. “And in return?” His answer came instantly. “Your father keeps his company.” The room felt colder. “And in private?” For the first time, Silas moved. He stood and walked around the desk. His footsteps were slow. Measured. He stopped close enough that I could smell expensive cologne and rain. “In private,” he said quietly, “we remain strangers.” His gaze never softened. “This is business.” His jaw tightened. “I don’t believe in love.” Then his eyes settled fully on mine. “And I stopped believing in you a long time ago.” The words landed harder than I expected. Five years ago, I would’ve cried. Five years ago, I would’ve explained. But life had changed me. That girl no longer existed. I looked directly at him. “I’ll sign.” A slight pause. “But I have conditions.” One eyebrow lifted. “You think you can negotiate?” I held my ground. “If you want this marriage to look real, yes.” Silas said nothing. “You stay out of my work.” His expression remained unreadable. “You don’t interfere with my father’s company.” I took a breath. “And whatever private life you have…” I looked him straight in the eye. “…keep me out of it.” The room stayed silent. Thunder rolled outside. Silas watched me longer than necessary. Then A small smile appeared. Not warm. Not kind. Dangerous. “Agreed.” I picked up the pen. Signed. Just like that. One signature. One year. One deal. When the ink dried, reality hit me. I had sold twelve months of my life. To the same man who once broke it. Silas reached forward and collected the contract. Our fingers brushed. A spark. Small. Instant. Annoyingly familiar. His eyes stayed on me for a moment before he stepped back. “Welcome to the firm, Mrs Thorne.” The title sounded wrong. Too heavy. Too final. “Our wedding announcement goes public tomorrow.” He straightened his cuffs. “And the ceremony begins at noon.” Then His eyes met mine again. “Don’t be late.” I turned and walked toward the door. My heels echoed across the polished floor. But before I reached it Silas spoke again. “Tell me something.” I stopped. He didn’t move. “Do you regret it?” I turned slightly. “What?” His eyes darkened. “Five years ago.” The question caught me off guard. For a second The office disappeared. I remembered late nights. Dreams. Promises. The version of Silas that used to laugh. Then reality returned. I looked away. “No.” It wasn’t entirely true. Silas gave a quiet nod. “Good.” I opened the door. But before stepping out, I looked back. His expression was impossible to read. Cold. Controlled. But something beneath it didn’t look like victory. It looked like unfinished business. I left without another word. The elevator doors closed. Only then did I breathe. My hands trembled. Not because I was scared. Because I finally understood. Silas thought this contract gave him control. He thought he had won. He thought this marriage would keep me close enough to watch. What he didn’t know was that I had my own reasons for saying yes. Reasons that had nothing to do with saving my father. Five years ago, Silas Thorne walked away and destroyed my life. Now fate had placed me inside his world. And before this year ended I was going to uncover every secret hidden inside his empire. No matter what it costs. Because revenge isn’t always loud. Sometimes It arrives wearing white and carrying a wedding bouquet. End of Episode 1
