His Light (Perryfield Series - Novel 1)

Penelope POV This morning when I woke up I realized it was Saturday, most importantly, June 4th 2004. All I wanted to do is stay in bed. Which I would have but unfortunately I had to get a moving on this day. Today was the day I was going to break up with my boyfriend Carter. Carter is a wide receiver on our School Football team; The Kodiaks. I never really wanted to date him. He asked me out one day and I couldn’t say no to him. So I've been honestly pretending this whole time. Carter’s one of the most popular guys in school and one of my brother’s friends. The guy I really wanted to date was the quarterback, the one and only Liam Ledger. He’s also my brother’s best friend since they we’re 9 years old when Liam moved to Perryfield. First time I saw him I wanted to hold his hand. I was only 8 years old at the time so I didn’t know anything about what boys and girls do when they like eachother. But also Liam didn’t like me. He only went for those hot popular cheerleaders and I’m far from one. I'm in the Glee club and to be quite honest I think Liam thinks the Glee Club is a joke. Tonight’s there’s a party at Matt’s house. His parents are gone this weekend and he’s throwing the first party before Summer Break. My phone starts buzzing and I see Carter’s name on my screen. I quickly answer and put him on speaker while I get ready for the day. “Hey Carter” I answer “Hey babe, Ill be picking you up around 7pm to head out to Matt’s party!” he tells me. “I’m spending the day with Haley and she wanted us to get ready together” I was totally lying to him. I wanted to avoid him till tonight. “I’ll text you once we get there and ill meet you.” “Sound good Penny. Have fun with Haley.” We finally hang up. I think this is going to be the longest day in history. I couldn’t wait to tell him it was over. After I was all done and ready I walked to Haley’s house. Perryfield is very small, the benefit of living in a small town is that we can walk everywhere we want. The downsize of it, is that everyone knows your business and everyone wants to be involved in it. I walked to the door and walked straight in the house without knocking. Haley and I have been best friends since we we’re 8 years old. Did I also mention that she’s Liam’s sister? I headed straight into her bedroom and flopped face first into her bed. “Where’s your brother?” I asked her when I lifted my head of her bed. “Hi to you too Penny!” I can see she was a bit frustrated. Can I honestly blame her though? I didn’t even say hi to her. “And to answer your question, No! He went to pick up Taylor and brought her to the mall. Her highness needed to go shopping for a new outfit for the party.” We both rolled our eyes. “Sorry Hals, Good afternoon. I really don’t get what he sees in her!” “Besides her being the captain of the cheerleading squad and having big boobs?” she replies “Discusting!” deep down I knew it. Guys have needs and who am I kidding, I know well enough guys like Liam get girls like that to sleep with them. “Stop it Penny!” “I can’t stop! You know I have a crush on your brother and I know damn well I have absolutely no chance with him.” I knew since I was a kids that Liam was way too good for me. He's tall, built, light brown hair and those beautiful green eyes. D*MN I'm pretty sure I'm drooling just talking about him. “He’s a jerk!” “Who’s a jerk?” Why in the hell did I just hear Liam’s voice? Haley told me he left to pick up Taylor to bring her to the mall. “Hey Nelly. Are you going to the party tonight with Carter?” He’s the only one that calls me Nelly. I don't know why but it makes me feel special coming from him. Plus everyone else calls me Penny. And I hate it when he asks me about Carter. I wish I wasn’t with him. Only a few more hours to go. “Hey Liam. Oh no one important.” I smiled at him. “And no, Im meeting him there. Hals and I will be heading out together.” “Cool, well if you girls need a ride let me know.” He said to the both of us. “Didn’t you tell me like an hour ago you we’re heading out to pick Taylor up?” Haley asked her brother. “Yeah! But I making her wait a bit. Im not her chauffer!” rolling his eyes he keeps on going. " I am heading out now but seriously if you need a ride later message or call me.” He says while looking directly at me. And just like that Liam was gone. “OH MY GOD!” both Haley and I started laughing. “Well once again I am saved.” “How will he know you like him if you don’t tell him?” Haley asks me. “Haley its more then just “like”. And unfortunately Im not his type.” I replied quickly. What I liked about Haley is that she didn't judge me for having feelings for her brother. And just like that without expecting it. “Let’s get a ride from Liam and go to the mall.” “But why Hals?” I ask her. “Because! Tonight we need to look absolutely sexy. Im single and your about 5 hours away from being too.” She was so right but I didn’t want to sit in a car with Liam and Taylor, touching and kissing eachother. Before I knew it she had already messaged Liam and she was waving me to follow her. Liam POV Talking to Penelope is so calming. I could talk to her for hours. Everything about her is refreshing. Not like Taylor in the other hand. The girl drives me absolutely bunkers. We’ve been dating for about 9 months and quite honestly I can’t handle her anymore. I don’t even know why Im with her. I know spending the day with her will put me in a bad mood. And tonight’s party will be shitty. That’s it! I need to break up it of with her tonight. To my surprised Haley sat in the back and let Penelope sit in the front with me before picking up Taylor. “What are you girls going to the mall for?” I asked them both. “Haley thinks we need to buy new clothes for tonight’s party. I think the idea is a bit silly.” “Did you just call my idea stupid?” Penelope and I both started laughing. My sister can be quite the drama queen sometimes. “I didn’t say stupid, I said silly.” Quickly replied Nelly “Well you didn’t think it was stupid when I told you we should.” “As much has listening to both of you bicker at eachother is super amusing, we’ve just arrived at Taylor’s” he told us. Penny squinted her face and then all of a sudden she said what I have been questioning myself for a while. “What do you see in her anyways?” she got out of the car and made her way to the back with Haley. I was speechless for a few seconds. “I…I...” before I could say anything Taylor had made her way into the front seat. “Hi babe!” and she kissed me on the cheek and my gaze went on Nelly. I answered her back “Hi” The rest of the drive to the mall was absolutely awkward. I would constantly be glancing at her through the mirror and to my surprised she was to. Penelope’s POV We finally arrived at the Mall and Haley and I quickly got out of the car and ran towards the doors. “Are you kidding me Penny? I can’t believe you said that to Liam.” “Someone had too. Anyways what’s done is done. Lead the way.” I quickly glanced back towards Liam and saw him looking in our direction. I wished he was mine. After shopping for a couple of hours and finally finding some fabulous outfits for tonight we head to the food court to have supper before we head back out to my place to get ready. We’ve decided that my place would be better. I wanted to avoid Liam at all cost. I didn’t want to feel anymore uncomfortable, I still had to break it off with Carter tonight. “I’ll get a 2 items with the noodles please” I start telling the lady at the counter. “sesamy chicken and medley vegetables”. “Would you like a drink with you food?” she then asks. “Sure Ill get a medium coke.” I quickly replied. “That will be $13.49.” she then proceeds. After paying for my food I quickly glance over at Haley. She ended up getting a slice of pizza at Inferno Pizza. We both headed towards an empty table where I quickly saw Liam and Taylor entering a*****e together. “ARGHH!” I took a seat and started eating my food. “Come on Penny. You can’t keep getting upset when you see them.” She starts telling me. “Who knows, it might not even work out for them. And by the way who cares! We have some new outfits for tonight. Your champagne sequin’s dress is going to make a lot of eyes fall on you. By tonight you’ll be a single lady ready to mingle with some new boys.” She added The thing though is I had only one boy in mind and it was Liam Ledger. We ended up walking to my house and arrived around 5:30pm. We quickly cleaned ourselves up and did our hair and makeup and changed our clothes. By around 6:40 we we’re done getting ready and it was time to head out the door and make our way to the party. But not before we both took one last look in the mirror. I decided to leave my hair straight while Haley crunched up her curly hair and added a little pouf on top. I kept my makeup pretty simple shimmer light brown eyeshadow with eyeliner. Haley though is bold so she decided to go with turquoise eyeshadow which soothed her so well. And then our outfits, I was wearing a nice champagne sequins dress and Haley went with a red halter top with leather pants. Some might think that we go way to out for these parties but if you have never been to one of Matt’s party you wouldn’t understand. Matts parents have the most glamorous house in Perryfield. You don’t just wear jeans and a tank top. Even if its not your scene, you got to dress to impress. It was now 7pm, which means people will be starting to arrive at the party. I quickly pulled out my phone and texted Carter. “About to leave my place. Be there in about 15 minutes.” “Ill be looking out for you” he texted back. Has we we’re walking to the party I started getting nervous about doing this. I started having a panick attack. “I don’t think I can do it tonight, Hals” I now couldn’t breath. “Here have a sip of this. It will calm your nerves.” Haley shoving me a bottle. “What is it?” I ask “Don’t ask any questions just drink some.” I did as she said and I quickly started coughing. “Hals! That’s pure vodka. You should had warn me.” I coughed a bit more. “So that you would say no! Absolutely NOT! I bet you feel a little bit better you cheap drunk.” She then started laughing at me and I quickly joined her in laughter. We made our way into the party. Said Hi to Matt quickly and made our way to their home bar and I grabbed myself a drink and headed outside away from the chaos that was already in the house. Has I made my way outside I saw Liam sitting on a chair with Taylor sitting on his lap. He looked absolutely miserable. And quickly they we’re both up and heading inside. My guest; to one of the empty rooms upstairs. I quickly turn my head and started browsing around me to see if I can find Carter anywhere. I definitely needed to get this over it and tell him how I felt and that we needed to end our relationship. Suddenly I felt someone brushing my arm and a hand around my waist. This was it, it was my cue. I turned around and Carter hugged me and and gave me a kiss on the lips. To my surprise I saw Liam in the house looking at us. With my arms around Carter’s neck I felt like I was cheating on Li. Even though he’s with Taylor. I then gave him a soft smile and he whispered something in Taylor’s ear and he was then gone. Without any more hesitation I let go of Carter and looked at him in the eyes. “Hey Penny, Ive been looking for you all over the place.” Has hes brushing the side of my face with his fingers. I don’t feel anything when he touches me. Absolutely nothing! Not even when we kiss. That’s why I need to end this. Right now! I see Haley giving me a thumbs up from where she’s standing, talking to our friends Megan and Kyle. “Carter, can we go over around the rose bush in the far end of the backyard?” Carter had the biggest smile on his face. He put his hand in mine and we started to make our way to the roses.
