Nyxa~ I woke up the next morning and got ready for my trip. Packing my bags should have felt harder than this, but it didn’t. I stood in the middle of the hotel room for a moment, looking at the open suitcase on the bed, and all I felt was a strange kind of calm. Not peace exactly, but something close enough if I was beginning to compare through all the years of hell I went through. After everything that had happened, I thought leaving would come with some hesitation, maybe even nagging doubt, but there wasn’t any. Besides, what was there to hold on to? The marriage was already over, the house never truly felt like mine, and the people I thought were family had made it clear where I stood. There was nothing left for me there. I walked over to the bed and continued packing, folding my clothes carefully and placing them inside. I wasn’t taking much, just what I needed. The rest could stay behind because it didn’t mean anything anymore. For years, I had lived my life around other people’s expectations, fixing problems that weren’t mine, holding things together that were already falling apart. And now that everything had finally broken, I realized something simple. I didn’t have to carry any of it anymore. My phone buzzed softly on the table, pulling my attention away from my thoughts. I picked it up and dialed the number I needed to take care of one last thing. The call connected quickly. “Transfer the funds,” I said. There was a pause on the other end before the person responded. “All of it?” “Yes. Every single one.” This wasn’t something I needed to think about. Every penny my father had siphoned from my mother’s treatment funds had already been traced and recovered. It took time, connections, and patience, but I made sure nothing was missing because that money was never his to take. “Understood,” the voice replied. I ended the call and lowered the phone slowly, my grip tightening slightly. That was one thing settled. One less thing for him to hold over me. I didn’t waste time before making the next call. “Mrs Timothy,” I said when she picked up. “Nyxa? Is everything alright?” she asked immediately. “I’ve made a direct payment to the hospital,” I replied. “It should cover my mother’s treatment for as long as possible.” There was a brief silence before she spoke again, her tone softer now. “That’s a significant amount. Are you sure?” “I am,” I said. “Please make sure she’s taken care of and in the event anything else is needed, you reach out to me on this line only. My father and sister are denied access to her health care and I have taken legal measures to make sure it stays that way.” “We will,” she assured me. “You don’t have to worry about that.” I nodded slightly, even though she couldn’t see me. That was all I needed to hear. “I’ll be away for a while,” I added after a moment. “Away?” she repeated. “Are you coming in for treatment?” I held the phone a little tighter, a faint smile forming on my lips even though there was no real humor in it. “No,” I said. There was a pause on the other end, but she didn’t question it further. “I understand,” she said quietly. I ended the call and placed the phone back down, exhaling slowly. Everything that needed to be done was done. There was nothing tying me here anymore. A knock came at the door. I already knew who it was. I walked over and opened it, and just like I expected, Leone was standing there. He didn’t say anything at first. He just stepped forward and pulled me into a hug, his arms firm around me like he was making sure I was actually there. I held onto him for a moment before pulling back. “Ready?” he asked. “Yes,” I replied. And this time, there was no hesitation in it. The drive to the airport was quiet. I watched the city pass by through the window, familiar streets and buildings slowly disappearing behind us. It just felt like I was closing a chapter that should have ended a long time ago. Leone didn’t try to fill the silence, and I was grateful for that. My mind was already busy enough. By the time we got to the airport, I felt steady. I stepped out of the car, adjusting my bag as I looked ahead, ready to just walk in and leave everything behind. And then I saw them. My father and that smug bastard, Vaughn. “They really are like vultures. Won't they f*****g give it up already?” Leone muttered, obviously irritated and I held in my laughter. They obviously had someone following me. They were standing near the entrance like they had been waiting, and the moment my father saw me, his expression twisted with anger. “Nyxa!” he called out sharply as he stepped forward. I stopped walking, my grip tightening slightly on my bag. “You think you can just leave?” he demanded. “I’m not asking for permission,” I replied calmly. Vaughn let out a short laugh beside him. “This is exactly what running looks like.” I didn’t bother responding to him. “You’re not going anywhere,” my father continued, his voice rising. “Do you hear me? You are not leaving this country!” I looked at him steadily. “Watch me.” That only made him angrier. “You ungrateful girl!” he snapped. “After everything we’ve done for you, this is how you repay us?” I almost laughed at that. “Everything you’ve done?” I repeated. “You mean everything you took.” His face darkened immediately. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. “I know enough,” I replied. Vaughn stepped forward then, his tone colder. “This ends now, Nyxa. You’re not leaving.” “And who’s going to stop me?” I asked. “If you take another step, I’ll make sure you don’t leave this airport,” he said. The threat was clear, but it didn’t have the effect he expected. Before anything else could happen, Leone stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of me. “That’s enough,” he said calmly. Vaughn’s attention shifted to him. “Stay out of this.” “I don’t think so,” Leone replied. My father scoffed. “And who exactly do you think you are? You keep butting into family affairs.” Leone didn’t even look at him as he spoke. “Someone who can make sure she walks through that gate without a problem.” I stepped forward and walked past them. “Nyxa!” my father shouted after me. “Don’t you dare walk away from me!” I kept walking. Because for the first time, I actually could. By the time I reached the boarding gate, my chest felt tight and I almost turned back to look but Leone held my shoulders. “Don't do it. You’ll be fine,” he said. I nodded. “I know.” I handed over my ticket and walked through without looking back. When I got on the plane, I sat down quietly and fastened my seatbelt, my hands resting in my lap as I stared ahead. It was done.
