CHAPTER 1: THE PROMISE THAT NEVER RETURNS
The rain had been falling since dawn. It drummed relentlessly against the windows of St. Victoria Medical Center, turning the busy streets outside into shimmering rivers of reflected lights. Ambulances arrived one after another, their sirens slicing through the storm, while nurses hurried along spotless corridors carrying files, medicine trays, and hope. For Ariana Cole, the sound of rain had never been ordinary. It always reminded her of the day her heart was broken. Standing near the emergency ward entrance, Ariana adjusted the sleeves of her white coat and tucked a loose strand of chestnut-brown hair behind her ear. At twenty-seven, she had become one of the hospital's most respected emergency nurses. Patients admired her calm voice. Doctors trusted her judgment. Even frightened children smiled when she spoke to them. Yet behind that composed face lived a woman carrying wounds no one could see. Her colleagues often joked that she never smiled with her eyes. They weren't wrong. Some pain settles so deeply that it becomes part of who you are. "Ariana!" She turned as her best friend and fellow nurse, Sophia Bennett, approached with two steaming cups of coffee. "I knew you skipped breakfast again," Sophia said, handing one over. Ariana accepted it with a grateful smile. "You know me too well." Sophia narrowed her eyes. "No. I know you're working yourself to exhaustion because you refuse to have a life outside this hospital." "I'm fine." "That's exactly what people say when they're not fine." Ariana laughed softly, but the laughter disappeared almost as quickly as it came. Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky. For a brief moment, she stared at the rain. Seven years. Seven long years. Yet every storm still brought back memories she had spent years trying to bury. She had been twenty. Young. Hopelessly in love. Back then, Damien Blackwood owned almost nothing except a secondhand backpack, a worn notebook filled with business ideas, and dreams far too large for his empty wallet. "I'll make it someday," he had told her countless times. "And when I do, I'll build a house where you'll never cry again." She had believed every word. Not because he was rich. Not because he was successful. But because he looked at her as though she were the most important person in the world. Their love had survived empty pockets, skipped meals, borrowed textbooks, and long walks home because they couldn't afford transportation. They had laughed through every hardship. Dreamed through every disappointment. And planned a future neither of them imagined could disappear overnight. The last day she saw him was raining too. He stood beside an old bus with a travel bag slung over his shoulder. "I have to go," Damien had whispered. "My uncle found me work in another city. It's only for a few months." Ariana held his hand tightly. "I'll wait." He smiled. "No matter what happens, don't stop believing in me." Then he removed a silver ring from his finger. It wasn't expensive. It wasn't even real silver. But to Ariana, it was priceless. "When I come back," he said, slipping it onto her finger, "I'll replace this with the most beautiful engagement ring you've ever seen." She had laughed through tears. "You don't need money to marry me." "I know." He kissed her forehead. "But I want to give you everything." Then he looked into her eyes and made the promise that changed her life. "I'll come back for you." Those were the last words she ever heard from him. Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Months became years. No calls. No letters. Nothing. At first she believed something terrible had happened. Then she convinced herself he had simply become too busy. Eventually... She accepted what hurt the most. He had forgotten her. A loud alarm echoed through the hospital corridor. "Code Blue in Emergency!" The memory shattered. Ariana blinked and immediately returned to the present. Doctors rushed past her. Wheelchairs rolled across polished floors. Patients cried. Phones rang endlessly. The hospital never stopped moving. She took a deep breath. Whatever happened seven years ago belonged in the past. Or at least, that was what she kept telling herself. She had no idea that before this night ended... The past would walk back into her life. And nothing would ever be the same again. The emergency room doors burst open. "Incoming trauma patient!" a paramedic shouted. Every doctor and nurse sprang into action. Ariana pulled on a fresh pair of gloves and hurried toward Trauma Bay One. "What do we have?" she asked. "Male. Approximately thirty years old. High-speed collision. Severe head injury, multiple rib fractures, possible internal bleeding. Blood pressure is dropping." "Prepare the trauma cart," Ariana ordered. The stretcher rolled into the room. The man's expensive black suit was soaked with rain and streaked with blood. His wristwatch alone looked as though it cost more than Ariana earned in a year, but no one cared about wealth inside the emergency room. Here, everyone bled the same. "One, two, three!" The team transferred him onto the hospital bed. Dr. Ethan Morris leaned over the patient. "Airway?" "Clear." "Breathing?" "Labored." "Pulse?" "Weak." "Start two IV lines." "Nurse Ariana, monitor his vitals." She nodded quickly. As she reached for the heart monitor, a lock of wet black hair fell away from the man's forehead. For a moment, time stopped. Her hand froze. No... It couldn't be. Her heart pounded so violently she could hear nothing else. She slowly looked at his face. The sharp jawline. The familiar scar just above his left eyebrow. The same long eyelashes she used to tease him about. Seven years had changed him. He looked older. Stronger. More mature. But there was no mistake. It was him. Damien. The coffee cup she had been holding earlier slipped from her memory as if her entire world had shattered all over again. Her fingers trembled. "No..." she whispered. Dr. Morris looked up. "Nurse?" Ariana blinked. "Y-Yes, Doctor." "I need his blood pressure." She swallowed hard. Focus. You are a nurse. Not a woman revisiting her broken heart. She wrapped the blood pressure cuff around Damien's arm. His skin was cold. Rainwater still clung to his hair. The heart monitor beeped rapidly. His pulse was unstable. Everything inside Ariana screamed to cry. Instead, she forced herself to remain calm. Professional. Steady. Because if she broke now... He might die. And despite everything... Despite seven years of silence... Despite every tear she had shed... She still couldn't bear the thought of losing him forever. The shrill beeping of the heart monitor echoed through Trauma Bay One. Ariana forced herself to look away from Damien's face and back to the monitor. His blood pressure was dropping. "Eighty over fifty," she reported. Dr. Ethan Morris frowned. "He's crashing. Increase the IV fluids. Get two units of O-negative blood ready." "Yes, Doctor." The emergency room sprang into controlled chaos. Nurses rushed between supply cabinets. A respiratory therapist adjusted the ventilator. A surgical resident prepared emergency medications. Ariana moved with them, every action practiced and precise, but her mind was fighting a storm of memories. Seven years... Where did you go, Damien? Why didn't you come back? She pushed the questions aside. There would be time for answers later—if he survived. Suddenly, a younger nurse hurried over holding a leather wallet recovered from the crash scene. "I found his identification." Dr. Morris barely looked up. "Read the name." The nurse opened it. "Damien Alexander Blackwood." Ariana closed her eyes for the briefest moment. It really was him. The nurse continued reading, her voice rising with surprise. "Occupation... Chief Executive Officer... Blackwood Global Holdings." Several staff members exchanged astonished glances. "The Blackwood Group?" one whispered. "The billionaire company?" "I saw him on television last month." "They say he's worth hundreds of millions." "I heard he's one of the youngest CEOs in the country." Ariana stared silently at Damien. The young man who once skipped meals so she could eat had become one of the richest men in the country. He had achieved every dream he once shared with her. Except the one that mattered most. He had never come back. Before anyone could speak again, the emergency room doors burst open. Nearly a dozen men in black suits rushed inside. Their movements were disciplined. Professional. Security. One stepped forward. "I'm Lucas Grant, Mr. Blackwood's head of security." His sharp eyes scanned the room. "How is he?" Dr. Morris answered calmly. "Critical condition. We're stabilizing him before surgery." Lucas nodded, but his expression remained tense. "Doctor... this wasn't an ordinary accident." The room fell silent. "What do you mean?" Dr. Morris asked. Lucas lowered his voice. "Mr. Blackwood's vehicle was forced off the road." Ariana looked up. Forced? "It appears someone wanted him dead." A cold chill crept down her spine. Outside, thunder roared across the night sky. Whatever had brought Damien back into her life... It wasn't over. It had only just begun.
