Homecoming gone wrong
Kingsley Something was terribly wrong. I can tell from the eerie silence in the house. In-house staff greeted me with wary eyes as I made my way inside the house. The familiar weight of exhaustion settling on me after the gruesome day of business meetings. And the silence in the house was setting my nerves on the edge. Usually Jules greets me in the hallway with her bright smile, warm hugs and kisses but today she was nowhere to be seen. “Jules?” I called out, my voice echoing through the quiet halls. I dropped my suitcase and began a hurried search from room to room, each empty space amplifying my growing sense of dread. Her phone was on the kitchen counter, a dead giveaway that she hadn’t planned to be gone long. The unease turned to panic when I found her favorite necklace, the one I gifted her on our first anniversary, a small silver locket she never took off, lying abandoned on the bathroom sink. It was until I got a call from “ The Lounge” Our favorite restaurant for dinner telling me my wife had planned a surprise dinner to announce some news but hadn’t followed up and if we want to cancel the reservation so they could deliver the gifts home. The gifts that my wife planned to give me. We were supposed to be there at sharp 8 pm but she didn’t tell me and hadn’t showed up herself. The fear I hadn’t felt before was gnawing at my stomach as I wait for the restaurant to deliver the gifts. I am pacing the lengths of hallway while rotating the wedding band on my finger with a question constantly swirling in my mind that ‘where is my wife?’ After few minutes of pacing which felt like eternity had passed our doorbell rang. I am running towards the double French doors when I saw Greta our in-house maid closing the door and holding two boxes, one is a small box wrapped in red gift packing while other is a large black box. I opened the large box and there was a Royal Blue hoodie with a quote on its front saying “Hi Daddy”. I couldn’t comprehend the thoughts which were running in my mind. I opened the second box and what I saw inside the box was the last thing I hoped to saw. A pregnancy test stick with two pink lines and an ultrasound. I take the ultrasound out of the box and suddenly I can’t breathe. Tears welled in my eyes, my chest constricting making it more and more difficult to breathe. I place a hand on my chest trying to calm my racing heart but every effort seems to be in vain. My back hits the wall of hallway and I skid to the ground, unsure of which emotion to feel. My heart sank: My wife was pregnant, and she hadn’t told him. From the looks of the situation she was about to tell me but what changed her mind that she didn’t even mention the dinner to me. Why hadn’t she shared this life-altering news? And where had she gone? My mind started to race with questions but one thing was clear I had to find my wife . The thoughts which were making their way to my mind were straight terrorizing like 'what if something happened to her?’ or ‘what if she no more wanted to be with me?’ No that can’t be happening she can’t change her mind now. I took our vows very seriously. ‘Till death do us apart.’ And I'll make sure my wife understands that too. I will find my wife and she better be safe and prepared to answer me for doing this to me and our child. I stood straight determined to find my wife at any cost. I grabbed my keys from the side table and started my way towards my car half jogging and half walking , the ultrasound crumpled in my hand. In a few seconds I’m racing through the streets of Manhattan towards Sara's mansion. Sara and Jules have been best friends from the first year of their high school. If anybody could tell me where my wife is it’s Sara. And there is a big possibility of Jules being there. I stopped my car in front of their mansion, before car is fully stopped I’m running towards their door. “Sara.” I banged on their door. “Open the door.” I’d been knocking and ringing the doorbell for the past three minutes, and I’d used up all my patience. I’m about to break the door when it finally swung open. “Oh it’s you.” A frown marred on Sara’s polite face when she took in my disheveled state. “What happened to you?” “Where is she” I asked her. “Who?” The frown deepened on her face as she contemplated my question. “My wife.” I replied in a desperate tone. “Is she here?” I pushed her aside and made my way inside. “Jules.” I shouted in the hallway while continuing to make my way. “Sweetheart! Come outside so we can talk.” “Calm down man! Why are you shouting?” Daniel asked coming from the living room concern evident on his face. Daniel is my childhood friend and only one whom I can refer to as friend. He is looking at me with his piercing blue eyes and six feet three height. We are almost equal in height while I’m more of muscles and build Daniel is on leaner side. “ My wife. I’m looking for my wife.” " Well she is not here."
