Chapter 1
Ria's POV Everything felt different since I stepped into this school, and that was just four minutes ago. Oathblood Academy was different from every other school in Kansas. Academically, it was the top one, but theoretically it should be at the very bottom. A school filled with vampires, spells, and dark secrets. I clutched onto my bag tightly, burying my face into the map I was holding, and trying to locate my dorm. I accidentally bumped into a wall. Oh s**t… It wasn't a wall, it was a girl. She had pale yet pretty eyes, her uniform hung perfectly on her body. There were two other girls standing beside her. She glared at me with contempt. Good! You just got here and you already made your first enemy. What happened to ‘stay away from trouble.’ I thought to myself. “Sorry,” I muttered quickly, as I found it hard to lock eyes with her. Are vampires always this intimidating? “Human. You are human?” She said with irritation in her voice, like the word human meant s**t. I nodded frantically. “A human in Oathblood? You f*****g lost your way or something?” She added. Right! A human shouldn't be in an academy filled with blood-sucking monsters. I didn't respond, and I think that made me appear weak. “Ohhh… We have a new plaything, and this one is very delicious,” she smirked evilly, her expression saying a lot more than her words did. The girls beside her grinned like fools, I tried to move past them but she poked me with a finger. “Not so fast, I am not done talking.” Damn it! She was a bully. I thought I had enough of them back at my human school. “You're probably a scholarship rat,” She snickered. Responding to her felt like a hard task. “Since you are so stubborn, you'd learn the hard way. Here at Oathblood, I am the queen, everyone listens to my command, and anyone who dares go against me gets thrown out of the school.” I couldn't tell if she was bluffing, she had the actual queen bee aura. “Understood?” “Yes,” I said softly. I was sticking to not causing trouble. I am outnumbered, waging a war against them would be a total joke. “Good. Watch your back, little one.” She brushed past me, and her friends tailed behind her. I caught a glimpse of a girl who had been standing at a corner, watching everything unfold. She waved eerily before running forward to me. She was also a vampire, but she didn't look as intimidating as the first girl. “You're new here,” she said. “Yeah,” I muttered. “Cool. Let me show you to the dorm.” She held my hand as she led the way. I thought vampires were generally aggressive. Why was this girl being kind? The dorm wasn't a pretty girly apartment, it almost looked like a haunted house. s**t! I forgot, vampires love darkness. This feels like a safe space for them. I gave her my card and she led me directly to my room, it turns out we were roommates. “I knew it! I have been asking for a roommate for months.” She laughed. I stared at her awkwardly. At least she didn't seem mean, being her roommate wouldn't be that bad. “Why are you staring?” “Nothing. The change just still feels weird.” “You're on scholarship, right?” I couldn't tell if she was asking genuinely, or if she wanted to make the difference between our status clear. This wasn't a direct scholarship though, some strings were attached. “I am.” “Don't feel sad,” she said. I looked up at her, directly into her eyes, it held warmth and kindness. Maybe this could work. “Change into your uniform, we still have classes to attend.” I gently unpacked my things, taking out my uniform. She sat on the bed, watching me like I was an interesting show. Then I noticed my uniform was blue. The girls who bullied me earlier wore black uniforms, my weird roommate is also wearing a black uniform, why was mine different? “You are different,” she said. I stared at her in shock. Don't tell me she can read minds. “No, I can't read minds, I judged from your expressions. Only ranking vamps can read minds,” she explained. “Get changed quickly.” I took the clothes and went into the bathroom to get changed. When I came out, I saw her applying lipstick. She noticed me instantly. “Good! You look great. Damn! Why didn't I get a blue uniform too?” She chuckled, though I didn't get the humor in her words. She threw her backpack on her shoulder, and we walked out. My eyes scanned every floor and every wall, they weren't like the ones I was used to. They looked ancient and luxurious. Students scurried around the buildings. The girl mumbled beside me. I wasn't paying attention, I was more interested in the scenery. “Won't you tell me your name?” Her voice was a little louder, she had probably asked before. “Ria,” I answered. “Cool, I am Maya,” she smiled. We kept walking. I couldn't help but feel uneasy. The other students suddenly noticed me, and their murmurs didn't go unheard. “Human?” “She looks weak.” “Oathblood now has low taste.” At once I knew life here would be difficult. Maya suddenly paused, “Welcome to Oathblood, baby,” she said, revealing her dangerous fangs. That was everything but welcoming.
