Jessica had aimlessly wandered on the street with her suitcase for two hours. She wanted to go to her parents' home but hadn't yet told them about the divorce. It wasn't very comfortable to talk about Robert's affair with Queenie. So, she went to Gail Long's place, her best friend.
Gail was different from Queenie because she and Jessica had grown up together. But she had gone abroad to study after graduating from high school. Fortunately, she returned here to work two years ago.
When Gail opened the door, she looked sleepy in a sexy nightgown. Seeing Jessica coming in a formal dress with a suitcase, she rubbed her eyes and said in confusion, "Jess, what happened? Wait a moment. My boyfriend is inside. I'll let him get dressed before letting you in."
Jessica asked in surprise, "Didn't you break up with Johnson? Have you gotten back together?"
Gail charmingly tossed her long hair and said, "No! I have never gotten back with my ex-boyfriends. I had a new boyfriend yesterday. I'll introduce you to him later. He's handsome. Please wait a moment."
When Gail opened the door again ten minutes later, she had changed into a new dress and put on makeup, looking charming.
"Jess, please come in."
While speaking, she helped her carry the suitcase. When Jessica entered the door and looked up, she saw Gail's new boyfriend.
He was talking on the phone on the balcony. He was tall and fair-skinned. Under the sunshine, he looked handsome and eye-catching. He was so bright that she dared not directly look at him.
Jessica suddenly stopped her steps, and her back instantly stiffened. She reflexively covered the diamond ring on her left index finger with her right hand and immediately turned around to leave.
"Jess, let me introduce my boyfriend to you. This is Chris Wade. Huh? Where is Jess?"
When Gail was about to introduce Chris to Jessica, she turned around and found the latter no longer behind her. She hurriedly rushed out and saw her walking down the stairs in a fluster. So, she asked, "Jess, why did you suddenly leave?"
Her voice made Jessica walk faster. Feeling her in a bad mood, Gail felt worried. She immediately took the elevator, arrived at the first floor before her, stopped her, and asked, "Jess, what's wrong?"
Jessica's breath was disordered when she said, "I suddenly remembered there is something urgent at school. I must deal with it now."
Gail felt relieved and said, "No wonder you are so anxious. You even ran down the stairs instead of taking the elevator. You are sweating profusely."
While speaking, she raised her hand and wiped the sweat off Jessica's forehead with distress and concern in her eyes.
Jessica looked at her in a daze, suddenly hugged her, and said, "Gail, you are my only friend now. I can't lose you."
Gail was confused to hear this but patted her back and gently said, "Don't worry. We will be friends forever. Can you tell me what happened?"
Jessica let go of her and said with sadness, "I'm divorced."
Gail was shocked and furiously said, "I knew you would get divorced sooner or later. I told you Queenie was a hypocritical b*tch, but you didn't believe me. So, you suffered a big loss! Don't be sad. I'll help you teach her a lesson."
Jessica suddenly wanted to cry and nodded, "I can't talk with you any longer. I need to go back to school right now. You should return home. Your boyfriend is upstairs. Don't keep him waiting."
Gail said, "OK! I'll meet you later. And we'll punish the jerk and the b*tch together."
Jessica nodded and said in a sobbing voice, "Hurry up and go back. I hope you and your boyfriend have a good time."
After finishing speaking, she ran away.
In the bustling street, cars and people came and went. But Jessica couldn't see or hear when she mechanically walked forward with tears streaming down her face.
She had never shed a tear when divorcing Robert. But seeing Chris in Gail's apartment, she could not help but burst into tears. Soon, she squatted on the side of the road, hugged her legs, and bitterly cried.
…
The night in the city became exciting when the evening lights were lit. Jessica came to the bar again and drank more than last night.
When a beautiful single woman got drunk in a bar, she would undoubtedly attract many people. Many good-looking men and women had accosted her, but she had turned all of them down.
Squinting her eyes in a daze, she took the ring off her finger and put it into the wine glass. After she took a sip, the ring was revealed.
Then, she murmured, "Chris, Chris..."
The more she thought about him, the more heartbroken she felt.
Had he seen her just now? He had not seen her. Otherwise, he would have chased her out.
"Why did you come to this city? Why did you become my best friend's boyfriend?"
Jessica stared at the ring in the wine glass, deciding never to wear it.
What an irony!
Jessica was immersed in sadness, so she did not notice several handsome elite men in high-end clothing looking at her with interest from the VIP area of the bar.
"Howard, look! Isn't she the woman you took away last night?"
"She came here again. Maybe she is waiting for you."
"Howard, why don't you say hello to her?"
"Howard, have you lost your interest after sleeping with her? If so, I will go to drink with her."
"You're courting death. Don't you dare you covet Howard's woman! He hasn't spoken yet. Howard, say something. I also want to drink with her."
The crowd was gathering around a cold and aggressive man. While sounding out his interest, they kept speaking flattery words. They were rich young men from wealthy families. During the day, they were giving orders in their respective fields. They came out to party and pick up girls at night, enjoying themselves.
Howard lazily put a hand on the armrest in a charming posture, lightly opened his lips, and coldly said, "Shut up!"
The table instantly fell silent. Under shocked gazes, he spread his crossed legs, stood up, put one hand in his pocket, and walked toward Jessica with a glass of wine.
