She was not Queenie, so she would never steal her friend's man.
Chris frowned, "I told you Gail and I are friends. I didn't touch her that night. You can ask her about it right now if you don't believe me."
Jessica's heart skipped a beat. And she was at a loss for words.
Chris softly sighed, sat beside her bed, and affectionately looked at her, saying, "Jess, you don't need to feel sorry for her after we get back together."
When their eyes met, she almost drowned in his tenderness. Then, she asked, "Why did you pretend not to know me in the car?"
He replied, "Because you keep emphasizing Gail is your friend. If we pretend to be strangers, you will not feel embarrassed when I pursue you."
Jessica was speechless. After remaining silent for a long time, she shook her head, "There is no possibility between us. You should move on!"
They had paid a heavy price to be together. And Chris's mother had died. Although a long time had passed, the pains had not disappeared. They would feel depressed even if they got back together. Moreover, she thought she was no longer worthy of him. She was not the pure girl in his heart, so she wanted to let all the beautiful things stay in the past!
Chris sadly looked at her and asked, "Have you fallen in love with someone else? Is he the man who picked you up during the day?"
Jessica wanted to deny it but nodded, "Yes!"
She had said so to let him give up.
He frowned, "You got in danger today because he left you there, right? He doesn't even care about your safety. What do you like him?"
He was gentle even when he questioned her.
Jessica bit the bullet and said, "Didn't you see his Rolls-Royce? He is rich!"
Chris's pupils shrank. Although he was handsome, he did not have a good family background. He had no money or power. And he always felt it was unfair. Her words had hit pain points.
He suddenly smiled at her and said, "I see. I'm sorry for bothering you!"
Then, he stood up and left without looking back.
Staring after him, Jessica felt so sorry that her lips trembled. She did not want to hurt him but had said those hurtful words. She loved him very much but could not get back together.
She raised her left wrist and looked at the old scar. It had been caused when she had cut her wrist to commit suicide.
Everyone thought Chris had paid a heavy price for their relationship. But she had also suffered a lot. Her reputation was ruined when they forced her to drop out of school. After her mother had forcibly transferred her to another school, she had run away several times to meet him and even threatened suicide. But she had failed to kill herself. After being rescued, her mother went to the hospital's roof and hysterically said, "Jess, I have raised you for 20 years and suffered a lot. But you decided to give up your future and family for a man. You threatened me with your life. You are cruel. I know you well. Although you failed this time, you will commit suicide again. I raised you. I am your mother. Do you think you can be crueler than me? If I die now, I will no longer worry about you committing suicide. Remember! It is you who forced me to die."
Then, she jumped off the 18-story building.
"Mom, no!"
When Jessica had heartbreakingly rushed forward, she had only caught a handful of air and watched her mother fall with her own eyes. Fortunately, her mother had not died. She had dropped on the air mattress and narrowly escaped death.
But Jessica had not dared to mention Chris or thought about him from then on.
Her cruel mother had taught her a lesson with her own life, cutting off her hope for Chris. So, when Robert had proposed to her, she had agreed in a fit of anger. She knew she would not be happy after marrying him because she didn't love him. Although Robert had said he loved her, he believed she had slept with Chris and blamed her for being unclean. He had never slept with her and cheated on her with Queenie, who was pregnant with someone else's child.
But Jessica had not cared. She wanted a punishment for her and her mother instead of happiness. She had wanted her mother to know she was unhappy because of her.
However, after she had gotten divorced and lost her job, she became weak. She was afraid her mother could not bear the blow, so she had not told her about it yet.
If she got back together with Chris now, her mother would go crazy and think Chris was the culprit. Maybe she would jump off a building again. But Jessica did not want to suffer such a heartbreak anymore. Moreover, her mother might not luckily fall on the air mattress next time. As her mother had said, she had raised her and was crueler than her.
Besides, Chris's mother had died of anger back then. If Jessica reunited with Chris, his family would swallow her alive. Chris's father was old. She could not atone for her sins if he got ill because of her, even if she killed herself.
Therefore, the obstacles between them were not Gail or Howard, who had taken her virginity.
Jessica left Gail's apartment with her luggage early in the morning because she did not want to be entangled with Chris any longer. It would be suitable for everyone.
Then, she rented an apartment and decadently slept for three days while recuperating. On the fourth day, she received a notice from the school that she was fired.
It was within her expectations. She was not sad because she had a way out. She had majored in translation in college. She had had excellent language talent since childhood and could quickly master the languages she was interested in. Therefore, she was proficient in six languages at a young age. She was confident she could work as an interpreter after losing her job as a teacher.
There was a severe shortage of interpreters in the domestic market. Jessica was proficient in six foreign languages and could do simultaneous interpretation, so it would be easy for her to find a job.
But she was still worried because her mother had spent almost all her savings on pulling the strings to get her a decent job as a teacher. She would get furious after knowing her daughter had lost her job.
So, Jessica's priority was to find a job. Although an interpreter did not sound as decent a teacher, the salary was much higher. She hoped this point could comfort her mother.
Jessica didn't dare to be decadent anymore, so she immediately sorted out her resume and posted it online. Soon, she received multiple recruitment information. After several interviews, she chose a well-known translation company and officially became an interpreter.
The sun shone brightly when she arrived at HE Group in sunglasses and a neat, professional suit, one of the world's top 100 companies.
She had accepted the task as the interpreter of the president of HE Group. The project duration was seven days.
Looking at the skyscraper, she coldly smiled because Queenie worked there.
