The Defective Core
The glass pod hissed as the pressure released, bathing Leo Vance in cold vapor.
Around him, the testing hall hummed with the electric energy of two hundred teenagers holding their breath. Overhead, massive holographic screens displayed the live standings of the Vanguard Academy's freshman evaluation.
"Leo Vance," the proctor called out, his voice flat and bored. "Mana Affinity Assessment."
Leo stepped out of the pod and onto the raised platform. He didn't need to look up to know what the screen would say, but he checked anyway.
[Mana Affinity Rating: 0.00%]
[Status: Defective Core]
A ripple of quiet snickers passed through the upper bleachers.
"Zero?" someone whispered loudly. "How did he even pass the entrance exam?"
"Must have bribed a recruiter," another replied. "He's dead weight."
Leo kept his expression completely blank. He didn't clench his fists, and he didn't glare at the crowd. Anger was a luxury for people who had the power to back it up. Right now, he was a nameless scholarship student with zero mana in a world where mana dictated your worth as a human being.
"Step down, Vance," the proctor said, waving a hand toward the exits. "Clear the platform for Student #001."
Leo turned, but his eyes locked onto the girl walking up the steps toward him.
Elena Frost.
She wore the pristine white blazer of the Academy's elite class. Silver hair, eyes like chipped ice, and a posture that silently communicated she was better than everyone else in the room. She was the top ranked cadet, the daughter of a high tier guild master, and completely out of reach for anyone on the lower floors.
As they crossed paths, her eyes flicked to him for a fraction of a second. No mockery. No pity. Just a cold, calculating evaluation before she looked straight past him.
Standard top 6tier elite, Leo thought, stepping off the stage. She doesn't even see the rest of us as competition.
Suddenly, the red emergency sirens went off.
[WARNING: TIER-4 DIMENSIONAL RIFT DETECTED WITHIN ACADEMY BOUNDARIES]
[LOCATION: SECTOR 3 TRAINING HALL]
[INITIATING AUTOMATIC LOCKDOWN]
The steel shutters slammed down over the exit doors before anyone could react. The floor beneath them buckled, split open by jagged purple light, and a massive rift tore through the center of the auditorium.
Panic erupted instantly.
"The doors are locked!" someone screamed.
"Where are the instructors?!"
A massive, obsidian skinned beast dragged itself out of the rift. Six red eyes, rows of razor sharp teeth, and dripping black sludge that hissed as it touched the floor. A Void Stalker. A creature designed to rip apart high tier Hunters let alone unawakened cadets.
The crowd scattered like rats. Proctors shouted orders that nobody listened to as the monster roared, its soundwave shattering the glass testing pods.
Leo backed up against the reinforced steel wall, his brain racing. The exit was blocked. The instructors were trapped on the outer perimeter. He had no weapon, no mana, and no armor.
The Void Stalker lunged not at the screaming crowd, but straight toward the stage. Straight toward Elena Frost.
Elena didn't flinch. She drew a thin silver rapier, frost instantly coating the blade as she channeled high density mana. She leaped forward, thrusting the blade directly into the beast's neck.
The Stalker screeched, thrashing wildly. Its massive tail whipped around like a steel cable, slamming directly into Elena's side. The force threw her across the hall, crashing into the stone pillar right next to Leo.
Her rapier clattered across the floor. She spat blood, struggling to stand, her mana flickering weakly.
The Stalker turned, fixing its six red eyes on her. It opened its jaws, gathering a sphere of dark energy.
Leo didn't think about heroism. He didn't think about saving the academy's prized student. He thought about one simple fact: if she died, the Stalker was going to kill him next.
He snatched the fallen silver rapier from the ground, pushed off the wall with everything he had, and drove the blade straight into the Stalker's open eye.
The Stalker thrashed, hurling Leo off its back. He crashed hard onto the concrete, the breath blasted out of his lungs.
The Stalker stumbled, black blood pouring from its eye, before collapsing onto the floor, dead.
Leo lay on his back, gasping for air, expecting the pain of broken ribs. Instead, a sharp, pitch black interface expanded directly in front of his vision one that looked nothing like the standard blue system windows of the academy.
[CONDITIONS MET.]
[DEFECTIVE CORE OVERRIDDEN BY ABSOLUTE DEVOURER SYSTEM.]
[TARGET KILLED: VOID STALKER (TIER-4)]
[DEVOURING TARGET CORPSE...]
[EXTRACTED: +15 AGILITY, +20 STRENGTH]
[SKILL ACQUIRED: VOID STEP (RANK E)]
A sudden wave of raw, violent energy surged through Leo's veins. The weakness in his muscles dissolved instantly. His vision sharpened until he could see individual specks of dust floating in the air.
He sat up, staring at his hands.
"You..."
Leo looked up.
Elena was leaning against the shattered pillar, holding her ribs. Her cold, blue eyes were wide, fixed entirely on him. She had seen the black window. She had seen him absorb the monster.
"You don't have a defective core," she whispered, her voice tight with pain. "What was that?"
Leo slowly stood up, feeling the newfound power surging through his body. He looked down at the top cadet of the academy, then at the dead monster beside him.
"If you want to live," Leo said calmly, his voice steady, "you're going to keep your mouth shut about what you just saw."
