This Is The Beginning?
It happened in just one night. Literally overnight everyone had just vanished, leaving a select few behind. This, unnatural selection, like out of a horror film was terrifying. Kind of like when you were 9 or 10 wishing that your parents or even adults in general would just dissappear off the face of the planet. Except this one time... it actually happened. Your wishes at a life with no parents actually came true. It wouldn't take long for you to realize that something darker was happening. Something more sadistic and horrific than anyone could've imagined, and the worst part, it was under your nose the whole time. You just couldn't see it. I'm startled awake by my alarm clock. "9am again...this sucks." I groan rolling off my bed to the floor. My already open window blows in the smell of fresh rain. My crack open to see clouds in the sky and water dripping down my bedroom window. "I love rainy days." I sigh into my pillow. I wasn't even being sarcastic. Rainy days are the best. Especially with a cup of coffee. I moan in delight when I think of the hot liquid. Strangely enough here in Shallow City, it doesn't rain often. You'd think with such a dense name it'd be a quiet and cold place to live but it was exactly the opposite. I felt like the odd one out. Always brooding on the hopes of a rainy day to ruin everybody else's. Another breeze blows through my window, caressing my skin with the silky cold, wet feeling of the morning. I slowly get out of bed. I live with my mother and 2 siblings. It's a Saturday morning. Nobody works, no school so I gotta be quiet walking down the creaky stairs. My mom is usually awake by now and coffee is already made, but today the pot is cold from the previous mornings brew. "She's sleeping in? Maybe I'll bring her up some coffee." I brew a fresh batch and set up the four cups. Knowing my sister's they'll be grumpy without coffee. Once it's done brewing I head back up the stairs to wake up mom. Only to my surprise, she's not there. Our cat Stella was sleeping soundly on the edge of the made up bed. Not a single wrinkle on the pillows at all. I check my sister's rooms to make sure they didn't leave earlier. and not tell me, but they were warmly tucked under their comforters, looking like small lumps in their beds. I walked to the window to check for her car. "That's weird. It's still parked here. Maybe she went for a walk." In the rain though? In the moment I didn't panic. I decided to make breakfast and get the morning started for my sister's and my mom's return. My youngest sister was the first to wake up. "Guh-morning Lily." she grumbled. "Hey Lainei. Did mom stop by your room this morning?" She gave me a strange look, shaking her head no. "I didn't either. Did you guys hear that storm last night though? It sounded like a hurricane hit us last night!" Our other sister Lexi said coming down the stairs. "No I slept straight through it. But it was refreshing waking up to rain and clouds. It wasn't even on the radar for the weather." Lexi shrugged turning on the TV. "UGH! Well whatever happened, there's nothing to watch!" she yelled. I laughed a bit. "There's always something to watch. You're just not interested." "No seriously there's nothing to watch. It's all static. See for yourself." I did. The black and white static on the screen showed no images of cartoons or reports. "The storm must've broken the cable. I'll call the company to have them come fix it for us." I began calling the TV company, but it just kept ringing. Ringing. And ringing. "Someone call mom really quick. The phone company isn't answering." Lexi dialed our mother and silence. Except that upstairs in her room, her ring tone was going off indicating a phone call. Lexi ended the call and the ringing stopped. "Mom? Are you up there?" Silence. "Call her again." I whispered to Lexi. She nodded. The ring tone could be heard but there was no answer. The phone instead kept ringing. Not even a voice-mail. "Let's go upstairs together." My sister's nodded. Even I was too scared to go upstairs alone. Our cat was bathing herself this time. Her phone on the side table but no mom in sight. "Mom would never leave her phone before leaving. Even her car is still here. Something is wrong." I didn't know what was going to happen, but my life was going to change that day.
