*CHAPTER 1: THE CRYSTAL CAVE
*CHAPTER 1: THE CRYSTAL CAVE
The dare was stupid.
โLast one to the old cave buys lunch for a month,โ Zack said, already sprinting across the wet grass behind St. Lumen Academy.
โThat cave is sealed,โ Clara snapped, but her sneakers were already moving. Rain from earlier made the ground slick. โThe school said it collapsed ten years ago. Students died.โ
โExactly,โ Ethan replied, his voice calm even as he jogged to keep up. โNo one goes there. Perfect for skipping weapons practice.โ
Damon didnโt answer.
He just walked faster, hands in his pockets, black shirt soaked through from the storm clouds gathering overhead. For half a second, lightning flickered in his dark eyes and was gone. No one noticed. No one ever noticed Damon Cross unless he wanted them to.
They were six. They had always been six.
Clara Reyes, with her purple-streaked hair and sharp mouth.
Zack Carter, loud, reckless, and grinning even when he shouldโve been scared.
Ethan Voss, quiet, calculating, ice in his veins.
Zina Adele, fire in her palms and anxiety in her chest.
Nova Hale, silent, watching everything from the shadows.
And Damon. Walking in front like he owned the world, and maybe he did.
St. Lumen Academy was built on lies. Ivory towers, new rules, old secrets, and a forest behind the east dorms that every teacher warned them to stay out of.
The six of them didnโt listen. Not tonight.
The cave entrance was half buried under vines and fallen rock. A rusted metal sign was bolted to the stone:
*DANGER. DO NOT ENTER. COLLAPSE RISK.*
Zack kicked it. The sound echoed. โDramatic.โ
Inside, it was cold. The temperature dropped ten degrees the moment they crossed the threshold. The air smelled like wet stone, copper, and something else. Electricity.
Claraโs flashlight trembled in her hand. โGuys. This is a bad idea.โ
โToo late now,โ Zina whispered. She reached out and grabbed Claraโs hand without thinking. Neither of them let go.
Ethan took point. Nova melted into the darkness behind them. Zack whistled, trying to act brave. Damon said nothing. He just kept walking, like the cave was calling him.
The tunnel sloped downward. The walls began to glow. Faint at first. Then brighter. Veins of blue, green, and red light pulsed through the rock like arteries.
โOkay thatโs not normal,โ Ethan said. For once, he didnโt sound calm.
The tunnel opened.
The six of them stopped breathing.
The cave was massive. A cathedral underground. Stalactites dripped from a ceiling lost in darkness. But that wasnโt what held them.
In the center of the room, six crystals floated in a perfect circle.
Lightning. Ice. Fire. Water. Earth. Shadow.
Each one a different color. Each one humming, vibrating, alive.
They rotated slowly, casting moving light across the walls.
Nova was the first to move. Her feet carried her forward before her brain could stop her. The shadow crystal pulsed once, in time with her heartbeat.
โDonโt touch it,โ Damon said. His voice was low. It cut through the humming.
But Zack was already laughing, nerves and adrenaline making him reckless. โItโs pretty. Iโm touching it.โ
He reached out.
The fire crystal shot forward.
It slammed into Zackโs chest with the force of a car.
He screamed.
Then the cave came alive.
The lightning crystal shot toward Damon.
The ice crystal toward Ethan.
The water crystal toward Zina.
The earth crystal toward Clara.
The shadow crystal toward Nova.
Light filled the space. White, searing, absolute.
Pain tore through all six of them at once. It felt like their bones were being pulled apart and rebuilt. Like fire and ice were poured into their veins. Like they were drowning and burning and freezing all at the same time.
Clara screamed. Zina was sobbing. Zack was cursing. Ethan didnโt make a sound. Nova vanished into darkness.
And Damon.
Damon arched backward, a silent scream on his face. The lightning crystal buried itself in his chest and exploded outward. Blue-white light poured from his eyes, his mouth, his fingertips.
Then, silence.
The light died.
All six of them were on the ground, gasping.
Ethan was the first to move. He sat up slowly. Frost was spreading across the stone around his hands. He looked down at his palms in disbelief.
Zina pushed herself up. Water was swirling around her arms in slow circles, defying gravity. Tears were still on her face.
Clara groaned. When she opened her eyes, a stone hammer was in her hands. Rocks the size of fists floated lazily around her head.
Zack was laughing and shaking at the same time. Flames licked between his fingers. โDid you guys see that? Did youโโ
โShut up,โ Novaโs voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Half of her was still merged with the shadows on the wall.
And Damon.
Damon stood.
Slowly.
In his right hand was a spear. Seven feet long. Made entirely of crackling blue lightning. It hummed. The air around it distorted from the heat.
His black hair was floating, static-charged. Two jagged lines, shaped like lightning bolts, were burned into the sides of his head where heโd shaved it before. His dark eyes glowed faintly. A diamond pendant now hung at his throat, pulsing once every few seconds.
He looked like a god.
He looked like a weapon.
He looked at each of them, one by one. Assessing.
Then his head snapped toward the tunnel entrance.
Footsteps.
Multiple.
Coming closer. Fast.
Damonโs face went cold. โWe need to leave. Now.โ
โBut what was that?โ Clara asked, clutching the hammer. โWhat are we?โ
โNo questions.โ Damonโs voice cracked like thunder. โRun.โ
The footsteps were closer. Voices, muffled but urgent.
โโenergy surgeโโ
โโcheck the east forestโโ
โโHeadmistress wantsโโ
Damon grabbed Claraโs wrist and yanked her to her feet. His skin was burning hot. โMove.โ
The six of them ran.
Behind them, the six crystals in the center of the cave began to c***k. One by one.
Lightning. Ice. Fire. Water. Earth. Shadow.
They shattered into dust.
As they burst out of the cave mouth and into the storm, a new sound cut through the rain.
A whisper. Not from any of them.
From the treeline.
โThey found it.โ
Damon froze for half a second.
Then he pulled them all into a sprint.
