Holding her again in his arms had been a balm to his soul. For that brief amount of time when he’d scooped her up into his embrace and carried her back to her room, it was as if the anger and depression he’d been inwardly fighting had somehow vanished. That, or tamped down to the point where it was no longer relevant.
She didn’t say a word as he strode down the halls, but he was fully aware of her hand pressed palm down on his chest, as if she was searching for his heartbeat. When he finally laid her on her bed, their eyes met, and he felt the sensation of time hanging suspended over them.
