Chapter 1
Millie's POV
The office was buzzing as the day went on. The red light on my commuter blinked again and I closed my eyes reeling in my anger. It was Cassie and her unruly demands.
I bit down on my tongue to stop the curse words from coming out. ‘’Only for Adrian” I remind myself of the reason I'm working my ass off as I pick up the telephone that didn't stop blaring.
“Get me another cup of iced tea” Cassie's shrill voice rang out through the telecom “and next time pick up the damn telephone on time. Always lazy”. The line went dead with a loud beep.
Cassie is the team manager of the fashion section of the company, S&Z. A spoiled brat and always a thorn in my flesh. Always picking on me and very rude. Today in the meeting room was another showdown between Eva and her which has turned her into Crankie Cassie.
I picked up a stack of papers that had to be printed as I pressed on the second floor of the building. Looking on the positive side, it's killing two birds with one stone.
I march straight towards the break room ignoring the eerie stares Tony throws my way. Tony is the HR of the accounting department and for some weird reason his office is two-faced. One side faces the break room, the other side faces the lobby which leads to other departments.
Which is practically unfair because Tony is a huge creep that flirts with anything in a skirt, shamelessly oogles and touches anything in it. Complaints has been laid against him but the company doesn't give a f**k. Instead the victims are either degraded or laid off.
He has been a thorn in my flesh. Always trying to grope me or touch me when no one is looking. His advances disgusts me. He is one of the reason Cassie hates me. She feels that I'm trying to get her man or we have something going on.
I'd rather date a raincoat or date an old man without teeth than have something to do with a bald headed taraban like Tony. I shiver at the thought willing my legs to move faster to avoid any encounter.
Upon entering the break room, Eva stands in the middle of the room with a ready to go iced tea and a pleading note. My anger depreciates at the gesture.
“I know I'm the reason she's being sh**ty. I'm sorry” Eva apologised, forwarding the cup into my hands. I smile, “thank you. This has saved me time”.
“He's here!” Samantha, a short plump lady from Tony's department barges in, squealing loudly.
“Who's here”, Eva asks
“The new boss. ” Samantha says, pushing me out of her way to use the mirror. “He is the definition of Greek god, Eva. He is so hot”. Samantha dumps her makeup kit on the slab, getting to work on her lashes.
“Don't play with me Samantha” Eva scolds, her hands running through her hair as she puts it in a high ponytail, folds her skirt an inch shorter, popping open two top buttons of her blouse.
“Girl I ain't playing”, Samantha brown eyes turn dreamy, shining stars as she gave a detailed explanation of hot . “You do know that I plan to resign because of Tony but I won't. I think I can endure a few more years of torture if I get to work and see the new boss everyday. I'm wet by just a glimpse of him”
“F**k that says alot” Eva points out. Her hands work vigorously under her shirt as she adjusts her breast pads making her boobs pop out.
“You're wet like a puddle just by looking at the new boss? Yeah right”. I laugh at the exxergration and the girls all getting panicked, dolling up even more. I picked up the printed stacks and iced tea ready to go.
“Wait Millie. Won't you at least see him?” Eva questions, putting a gloss over my lips but I stop her.
“No need”. I say, wiping the gloss away with the back of my hand. “It will be some douchebag who will just make this hell hole worse. Have fun guys”.
The scene before me reeked of chaos. The lobby, once a space of well minded talents working together transformed into a circus, happy horny clowns let loose.
Ladies, once classy and professional, stumbled about, skirt hitched, cleavages exposed —some even spilling over. Their eyes all fixated on something —or rather, someone, at the entrance of the hall. Each gaze filled with desire and pure lust. Desperation shining through like they were intoxicated. What w***e house is this?
I make my way towards the elevator. Its doors slid open gushing out a parade of carnal women. Red glossy lips and sultry eyes mask their features.
What in the name of Mary Poppins is going on!
With a groan, I change my routine heading for the stairway as it seems to be my only option at transport. All this for a man. Yuck!!
I knock on Cassie's door announcing my presence. Her seat was empty. Even her bag and laptop were gone. Just the scent of her cheap perfume lingered around. Great. Another hormonal tee–manager off to feast her eyes.
The rest of the day went away in a blur. Working my ass off for a 500 dollar paycheck that put minimal on my table. The only light bulb illuminating from my desk.
I basked in the silence.
No Cassie , no buzzing of telephones, no humming printers. Just utter silence. Eva was sweet enough to bring me some Chinese order. She must really feel bad for the way things played out this morning.
DING!
A sense of unease settled in my gut at the sound of the notification popping on my phone.
The image displayed had my heart racing. My hands froze midair, hovering over the keyboard, pausing every other cell in my body.
No, not again!
Dread slipping into every pore at the fact that I could be so careless yet again.
Now I don't like the quiet anymore.
I hated it.
I tend to forget my reason for working my butts off and enduring all hardships —sole purpose of my existence.
I stash my keys and a few personal things into my bag pulling the cord off the system. Files in my arms, shoes on my fingertips, I dash for the exit.
Throwing pleas, sorry and excuse mes’t o passersby as I raced down the chilly streets of Los Angeles.
Hoot of loud horns along with shout of insults and curses thrown my way as I dash through the busy road pleading my apologies ignoring the yells of bystanders to stop.
A blinding light came into my line of sight as I saw a black Audi coming at the fastest speed ever.
I freeze willing my legs to complete a few steps.
The horns, the curses, the insults and the buzz of the night all vaporise into stunned silence.
Time stopped. Set of icy blue eyes glares at me from the driver's seat, lips curved into a sinister smile. My throat choked with panic as I prepare for the painful impact.
It was silent but bright. Painless if I dare say.
