Chapter 1: How I Met Him
Victor saw Mercy from across the street. The moment his eyes fell on her, he stopped walking. For a few seconds, he simply stood there, watching her approach. She was walking confidently along the street, her bag resting comfortably on her shoulder. The morning sun reflected softly around her, making her look even more beautiful from where Victor stood. She seemed completely unaware that someone had suddenly become interested in her from a distance. Victor smiled to himself. Wow… He adjusted his shirt and looked at her again. _See this beautiful lady coming,_ he thought. _Should I approach her?_ But immediately, another thought entered his mind. _What if she snubs me?_ Victor almost laughed at himself. He had approached ladies before, but for some reason, this one felt different. There was something about Mercy that caught his attention immediately. Maybe it was the way she walked. Maybe it was her serious expression. Or maybe it was simply the fact that she was beautiful. Whatever it was, Victor knew one thing. He wanted to talk to her. ⸻ Meanwhile, Mercy had also noticed Victor. From a distance, she could see him standing there. And she could also see that he was staring. Mercy frowned slightly. _Why is this guy staring at me like that?_ She continued walking. But Victor was still looking. Mercy became even more suspicious. _Is he okay?_ She looked away and continued moving. _Maybe he’s looking at someone behind me,_ she thought. But when she glanced back, Victor was still looking directly at her. Mercy shook her head slightly. Definitely strange. She had experienced this kind of thing before. Some men would stare, smile, or try to get her attention whenever she walked past. Most times, she simply ignored them and continued on her way. She wasn’t in the mood for unnecessary conversations that morning. She had somewhere important to be. Work. And unfortunately, she was already running late. Mercy checked the time on her wristwatch and sighed. “Oh no,” she whispered to herself. She quickened her steps. ⸻ Victor saw her get closer. _She’s getting closer,_ he thought nervously. His heart began beating faster. He didn’t understand why he suddenly felt so nervous. It was only a conversation. All he needed to do was say hello. Simple. But somehow, it didn’t feel simple anymore. Mercy finally got close to where Victor was standing. Victor took a deep breath. “Hello.” Mercy heard him. But she didn’t stop. She continued walking. Victor quickly turned and followed her. “Excuse me!” Still nothing. Mercy kept walking. Victor smiled nervously. Ah-ah. This one is serious. He increased his pace. “Please, wait a minute.” Mercy still didn’t respond. Victor walked closer. “My name is Victor.” Mercy continued walking as if she hadn’t heard anything. Victor looked at her and almost laughed. _She’s really going to ignore me._ But he wasn’t ready to give up. “My name is Victor,” he repeated. “May I know yours?” Still nothing. Mercy kept her eyes forward. Victor continued walking beside her. “I’d like to know you,” he said. Mercy remained silent. “Even if it’s just as friends.” That sentence finally made Mercy slow down slightly. Victor noticed immediately. He grinned. At that moment, something unexpected crossed Mercy’s mind. She looked at him properly for the first time. Wait… She studied his face. _I’ve seen this face before._ She couldn’t remember exactly where. Maybe somewhere around the neighborhood. Maybe at a shop. Maybe on the street. She wasn’t sure. But his face didn’t feel completely unfamiliar. Mercy continued staring at him for a few seconds. Victor saw it. And suddenly, he became self-conscious. _Why is she looking at me like that? Did I say something wrong?_ Mercy quickly looked away. Another thought crossed her mind. _He’s actually handsome._ She immediately corrected herself. _Mercy, focus._ But the thought refused to leave her mind. Victor had a warm smile. He didn’t look aggressive or rude. Even though she had ignored him several times, he hadn’t insulted her or become angry. He simply kept trying to have a conversation. Mercy sighed quietly. _Maybe I should give him a chance._ Then another thought followed immediately. _But I hope he won’t disappoint me._ Mercy had learned not to trust people too quickly. Sometimes, the people who appeared nice at first could turn out to be completely different later. She had seen enough to know that first impressions weren’t always enough. Still… Something about Victor made her curious. She finally stopped walking. Victor stopped too. Mercy slowly turned around. For the first time, she looked directly into his eyes. Victor’s heart skipped. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. The noise from the street continued around them. Cars moved past. People walked by. Somewhere in the distance, a bus horn sounded. But Victor barely noticed anything. All his attention was on Mercy. Finally, Mercy spoke. “My name is Mercy.” Victor’s face immediately brightened. “Mercy?” She nodded. Victor chuckled deeply. “That’s a beautiful name.” Mercy said nothing. “And honestly,” Victor continued, “the name suits you.” Mercy raised an eyebrow. “Why?” Victor beamed. “Because you look like someone who can either show mercy…” Mercy folded her arms. Victor paused. “Or refuse to show it completely.” Mercy tried not to smile. But she couldn’t help it. A small smile appeared on her face. Victor noticed immediately. Yes! He was happy, but he tried not to show too much excitement. Mercy looked away. “Thank you.” Victor smirked. “You’re welcome.” For the first time since their conversation began, the atmosphere between them became less tense. Victor extended his hand. “It’s nice meeting you, Mercy.” Mercy looked at his hand. Then she slowly shook it. “Same here, Victor.” The moment their hands touched, both of them felt something strange. Not dramatic. Not magical. Just a brief moment of awareness. They quickly released each other’s hands. Victor cleared his throat. “So…” Mercy looked at him. “Where are you heading?” “Work.” Victor nodded. “Same here.” Mercy looked surprised. “Really?” “Yes.” “Where do you work?” Victor chuckled. “Ah-ah. Easy.” Mercy frowned. “What?” “One question at a time.” Mercy laughed softly. Victor stared at her. That laugh. He liked it. A lot. Mercy noticed him staring again. “What?” Victor quickly looked away. “Nothing.” “You’re staring again.” “I wasn’t staring.” “Yes, you were.” Victor grinned. “Okay. Maybe I was.” Mercy shook her head. “You’re funny.” “I’ll take that as a compliment.” “You shouldn’t.” “Too late.” Mercy laughed again. Victor smiled. For the first time that morning, Mercy forgot that she had been in a hurry. The conversation was surprisingly easy. She didn’t know why. Normally, she would have ignored someone like Victor and continued walking. But somehow, she found herself standing there talking to him. Victor looked at her. “Heading to work?” “Yes.” “Far from here?” “Not really.” “Then why do you look like someone is chasing you?” Mercy’s eyes widened. “Oh!” Victor looked confused. “What happened?” Mercy quickly reached into her bag and brought out her phone. She looked at the screen. Her expression changed immediately. “Oh no!” Victor became worried. “What?” Mercy looked at him. “I’m late!” Victor looked at his own phone. Then his eyes widened too. “Oh!” Mercy stared at him. “You’re late too?” Victor sighed. “Very late.” Mercy placed her hand on her forehead. “My boss is going to be furious.” Victor laughed. “This isn’t funny!” “I know, I’m sorry.” “You’re laughing.” “Because you’re panicking.” “Victor!” “Okay, okay. I’m sorry.” Mercy quickly placed her phone back inside her bag. “I have to go.” Victor nodded. “Of course.” Mercy turned around. Then she suddenly started running. Victor watched her for a second. Then something suddenly came into his mind. Wait! He didn’t have her number. He didn’t know where she lived. He didn’t know where she worked. He only knew her name. Mercy. Victor’s eyes widened. “Mercy!” She continued running. Victor immediately ran after her. “Mercy, wait!” Mercy turned her head slightly while still moving. “What?” “At least let us exchange numbers!” Mercy continued running. Victor followed behind her. “I’m late too, but I can’t just watch you disappear like that!” Mercy laughed. Victor was running now, trying to keep up. “Mercy!” She slowed down slightly. Victor came closer. “Your number!” Mercy looked at him. “You’re serious?” “Yes!” “You’re going to get yourself fired because of a number?” Victor beamed. “Maybe.” Mercy shook her head. “You’re unbelievable.” “Please!” Mercy looked at the road ahead. Then back at Victor. She sighed. “Okay!” Victor immediately brought out his phone. “Wait, wait. Let me open my contacts.” Mercy laughed impatiently. “Victor, hurry up!” “My phone is slow!” “Of course!” “Don’t insult my phone.” “I’m late!” “Okay!” Victor finally opened his phone. “Tell me.” Mercy started speaking quickly. “080240…” Victor began typing. “Wait!” Mercy looked at him. “What?” “Slow down!” Mercy laughed. “Victor!” “Please!” Mercy repeated the number. Victor typed again. Then Mercy suddenly looked at the time. Her face changed. “Oh my God!” “What?” “I really have to go!” “But the remaining number!” Mercy stepped backward. Victor stared at her. “Mercy!” She smiled. “Bye, Victor!” “Wait!” Mercy turned around. And before Victor could say another word, she ran. “Mercy!” Victor started after her again. But this time, she was already too far away. He slowed down. Then stopped. Mercy continued running until she disappeared into the busy morning crowd. Victor stood there, breathing heavily. He looked down at his phone. The number was incomplete. “080240…” Victor sighed. “No way.” He looked in the direction Mercy had disappeared. He couldn’t believe it. After all that conversation… After finally making her smile… After finally getting her to talk to him… She had disappeared. Victor stood in the middle of the street, holding his phone. Then he slowly raised his hand. “Bye, Mercy.” But she didn’t see him. She was already gone. Victor lowered his hand. For a moment, he felt foolish. He didn’t even know if he would ever see her again. Lagos was big. People met every day and never saw each other again. Maybe that was it. Maybe Mercy would simply become one of those strangers whose names you remembered but whose faces slowly disappeared from your memory. But Victor didn’t want that. Something inside him told him that this wasn’t the end. He looked at the incomplete number again. “080240…” He smiled slightly. “Great.” Then he shook his head. “What am I supposed to do with this?” Victor finally turned around and began walking toward his workplace. He was definitely late now. Very late. But strangely, he didn’t feel completely upset about it. Because for the first time in a long while, something interesting had happened to him. He had met a girl named Mercy. A beautiful girl. A stubborn girl. A girl who had ignored him several times before finally giving him a chance to speak. Victor chuckled as he remembered the expression on her face when she first looked directly at him. He remembered her smile. Her laugh. And the way she had run away after giving him only part of her number. “Mercy,” he said quietly. He didn’t know it yet. But that morning… That simple conversation on the street… Would become the beginning of something that would change his life completely. Because sometimes, the people we meet by chance… Are the people who leave the biggest marks on our lives. And sometimes… The person you are happiest to meet… Can later become the person you wish you had never met. But Victor didn’t know any of that yet. All he knew was that somewhere in the city, Mercy was probably rushing to work, probably worried about her boss, and probably laughing about the strange young man who had chased her down the street just to get her phone number. Victor smiled again. “I’m going to see you again, Mercy.” He didn’t know when. He didn’t know where. But somehow… He believed he would. And as Victor continued walking toward work, one question remained in his mind: Would he ever see Mercy again? ⸻ *TO BE CONTINUED…* *THE BIG QUESTION* Will Mercy accept to be Victor’s gf ?
