CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT It was still night when Audrey was permitted to enter the intensive care unit at Undermere General Hospital. She stared at Malcolm lying in the mechanised hospital bed, his face covered by an oxygen mask. A bag on a hook was attached to an intravenous line that disappeared into his arm. A cardiac monitor relayed the peaks and troughs of his beating heart, and a drainage bag attached to the bed was collecting his urine. On a trolley was a defibrillator. Gavin, a nurse, placed an upright chair near the bed. ‘He’s sedated. He has a broken hip, a fractured left arm, and a dislocated shoulder, which we will relocate under general anaesthetic.
