CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN Audrey’s hand shook as she poured boiling water into a teapot. She put the kettle down and sobbed for a little brother she hardly knew. She had come to Hawksmead to try and discover the truth but had betrayed her family by making love to the man responsible for her brother’s death. How she despised herself. From the hallway, she heard Malcolm cry and then the sound of his body, thudding down the wooden staircase. ‘Malcolm!’ She hurried out of the kitchen, along the corridor and into the hallway.
