Chapter 14: Alex“Your invitation, please.”
Wordlessly Alex handed it over to the bearded kid in black at the entrance, who studied it before giving her an armband. Pulling her woolen cap off, she shook out her hair and stepped into the foyer, looking for a place to leave her coat. There was a rack piled high in one corner and she added hers to the pile. Beyond the glass door she could see people milling about and, as she was already late, hastened to join them. People were clapping as she entered and it confused her momentarily before she realized they were applauding the artist who apparently had just finished her welcome speech. Rail-thin, her long grey hair tied into a sloppy ponytail, she looked more like a leftover hippie than a contemporary artist, and for a brief moment Alex wished
