A new beginning
Episode. 1 I woke up early at the sound of my alarm, arrraggghhh can't I just get more sleep as soon as I ducked my head under the duvet my sister barged into my room. "Lily get up you're gonna be late for your first day in college". but I don't want to go,besides I think I caught a fever. oh but it seems that someone was feeling alright last night while eating pizza. "Lily breakfast now, you not planning on missing school are you. l could practically see Emma rolling her eyes with the look that says "you heard mom". The smell of pancakes and freshly brewed coffee filled the house as Lily slowly made her way downstairs. She was still wearing her pajamas, her hair messy from sleep, and her face carried the expression of someone who had been personally betrayed by the existence of mornings. The moment she entered the dining room, Emma looked up from her phone. "Finally!" Lily pulled out a chair and dropped into it. "Don't sound so excited. I'm still considering going back upstairs." Emma laughed. "You're not going back upstairs. You have school." "I know." "And you're late." "I'm aware." "And you haven't even changed." Lily reached for a pancake. "I can change in five minutes." "That's what you said twenty minutes ago." Before Lily could answer, Noah leaned across the table and stole the pancake from her plate. "Hey!" He grinned. "Too slow." "Give it back." "No." "Noah." He took a bite. "You can't have it now. It's contaminated." Lily stared at him in disbelief. "You are so annoying." "Thank you." Their mother walked into the dining room carrying a bowl of fruit, smiling at the argument. "Good morning, my babies." "Mom, Noah stole my pancake." Their mother looked at Noah. "Did you?" Noah nodded proudly. "Yes." "And you're proud of that?" "Very." Their mother shook her head, laughing as she placed the bowl on the table. "Just make sure Lily eats properly. You know her allergy." Lily sighed. "I know, Mom." Her father lowered the newspaper he had been reading. "Today is your first day, isn't it?" Lily immediately lost her appetite. "Unfortunately." Her father smiled. "You might enjoy it." "I doubt it." Emma leaned closer to her. "You haven't even gone yet." "I don't need to go to know I'm going to hate it." "Give it a chance," her mother said gently. Lily looked around the table. "Easy for all of you to say. You aren't the ones starting at a completely new school." Her father folded his newspaper. "You'll make friends." "I already have friends." "I know." "And I liked my old school." "I know that too." His voice was calm, and Lily knew he wasn't trying to dismiss how she felt. "I'm just asking you to give this one a fair chance." Lily picked at the edge of her pancake. "Fine." Emma smiled. "That's my girl." Lily gave her a look. "Don't." "What?" "That smile." Emma's smile grew wider. "I'm just excited for you." "Excited about what?" "Your new school." Lily narrowed her eyes. "You look suspiciously excited." Emma shrugged. "Maybe you'll meet someone." Lily groaned. "Emma." "What? I'm just saying." "I'm going to school, not looking for a husband." Noah nearly choked on his juice. "A husband?" Lily pointed at him. "Don't start." He raised both hands. "I'm innocent." Emma laughed. "You never know. Maybe there's a cute guy waiting for you." "I'm not interested." "You haven't seen him." "I don't care." Her mother smiled into her cup. "Let your sister breathe, Emma." "I'm only encouraging her." Lily shook her head. "You people are impossible." Her father smiled. "Just remember why you're going." Lily looked at him. "To get an education." "Exactly." Noah raised his hand. "And possibly a husband." "Noah!" The whole table burst into laughter. Lily covered her face with her hands. "I hate this family." Her mother reached over and squeezed her hand. "No, you don't." Lily peeked through her fingers. "No. I don't." For a moment, she smiled. Maybe leaving home for a new school wasn't going to be as terrible as she imagined. Maybe. Then she looked at the clock. Her eyes widened. "Oh my gosh!" She jumped out of her chair. "I'm late!" Emma burst out laughing. "Now you're finally worried?" Lily grabbed her bag from beside the chair. "Why didn't anyone tell me?" Noah calmly took another bite of his pancake. "We did." Lily stopped. "When?" "About twenty minutes ago." She groaned. "Unbelievable. By the time Lily came downstairs again, she was dressed and ready. By the time Lily came downstairs again, she was dressed and ready. She adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and looked at herself in the mirror near the entrance. "Okay," she whispered. "First day. Just survive." "Talking to yourself now?" Lily turned around. Emma was standing behind her, holding her phone. "I'm preparing myself mentally." "For school?" "For people." Emma laughed. "Just be yourself." "That's exactly what I'm worried about." Before Emma could respond, their mother appeared from the living room. "Have a wonderful first day, sweetheart." She pulled Lily into a quick hug. "Call me if you need anything." "I will." Her father walked over and kissed the top of her head. "Don't worry too much." "I'll try." Noah suddenly appeared from behind them. "Don't forget your husband!" Lily's eyes widened. "Noah!" He laughed and ran toward the door. "Bye!" "Come back here!" But he was already gone. Emma shook her head. "He's going to keep doing that all day." "I know." Lily sighed. Then she opened the door. And for the first time, she stepped outside with the knowledge that she was about to start over. --- The school was much bigger than Lily had expected. She stared through the car window as they approached the entrance. Students were everywhere. Some were standing in groups, laughing and talking. Others hurried through the gates with backpacks hanging from one shoulder. Several expensive cars pulled up one after another. Lily barely looked at them. She had grown up around expensive cars. To her, they were just cars. Her father stopped near the entrance. "Have a good day." Lily opened the door. "I'll try." She stepped out. The moment the car drove away, she suddenly felt very alone. She adjusted her bag and looked around. "Okay, Lily." She took a breath. "Let's do this." She walked through the entrance. For the first few minutes, she had absolutely no idea where she was going. She checked the schedule in her hand. Then looked at the building. Then looked at the schedule again. "Great." She sighed. "Completely lost on my first day." "Do you need help?" Lily turned. A girl with long dark hair was standing beside her. She had a bright smile and an expression that immediately made her seem friendly. "Actually, yes." The girl laughed. "I figured." She pointed at the paper in Lily's hand. "First day?" "Is it that obvious?" "You're holding your schedule upside down." Lily looked down. She quickly turned the paper around. "Oh." The girl laughed. "I'm Nia." "Lily." "Nice to meet you." "You too." Nia glanced at Lily's schedule. "We have English together." Lily's face brightened. "Seriously?" "Yep." "Thank goodness." Nia smiled. "Come on. I'll show you where it is." As they walked, Nia began pointing out different parts of the school. "That's the cafeteria. The library is upstairs. Science classes are usually on the second floor." Lily listened carefully. "You've been here long?" "Since junior year." "Then you're basically a professional." Nia laughed. "Something like that." They reached the classroom. A girl sitting near the window looked up. "Nia." Nia waved. "Chloe." She turned toward Lily. "This is Lily. She's new." Chloe looked Lily over for a moment before smiling. "Welcome." "Thanks." Another girl sitting beside Chloe turned around. "I'm Mia." She smiled. "You can sit with us." Lily smiled back. "Thank you." She took the empty seat. Within minutes, the three girls were talking as though they'd known one another for weeks. "So where did you move from?" Mia asked. Lily told them. "Wow." Chloe raised her eyebrows. "That's far." "Yeah." "Do you like it here?" Lily glanced around the classroom. "I've been here for about twenty minutes." Mia laughed. "Fair enough." The teacher entered before they could continue. The morning passed faster than Lily expected. By lunchtime, she was beginning to relax. Maybe this school wasn't going to be completely horrible after all. She sat with Nia, Mia and Chloe at one of the cafeteria tables. Nia was telling her a funny story about one of the teachers when suddenly, the conversation around them changed. Not completely. Just enough for Lily to notice. A few students glanced toward the cafeteria entrance. Someone whispered something. Another person immediately looked away. Lily frowned. "What happened?" Nia stopped talking. "Nothing." Lily looked toward the entrance. "Why is everyone looking over there?" Mia exchanged a glance with Chloe. "It's nothing." "Okay..." Lily looked back at her food. Then she noticed that even Nia had become unusually quiet. She leaned closer. "Seriously. What's going on?" Nia hesitated. "There's just someone here." "Someone?" Mia lowered her voice. "Don't worry about it." Lily looked toward the entrance again. She could see a group of students standing near the doors. But she couldn't tell what had caught everyone's attention. "Who is it?" Chloe shook her head. "You don't need to know." That answer only made Lily more curious. "Now I definitely want to know." Nia sighed. "You'll learn eventually." Lily raised an eyebrow. "Is he famous or something?" Mia gave a small laugh. "Not exactly." "Then what?" Chloe leaned closer. "He's just... different." Lily frowned. "Different how?" None of them answered immediately. Then Mia said quietly, "Just stay away from him." Lily stared at her. "Why?" Mia glanced toward the cafeteria entrance again. "Because everyone does." Lily followed her gaze. But by then, whoever they had been talking about was already gone. Lily looked back at them. "What's his name?" Nia shook her head. "You'll hear it soon enough." Lily frowned. That was the strangest introduction to a person she'd ever experienced. She looked down at her lunch. "Okay..." She shrugged. "Whatever." But despite herself, her curiosity remained. Whoever that boy was, he had managed to become the most interesting thing about her first day without even saying a word to her. And Lily had a feeling she hadn't heard the last of him.
