chapter 1
On the day of our daughter Alice's thirteenth birthday, my husband Charles Fleming finally agreed to take us to the Royal Forest Resort at her request. Throughout the journey, Alice was very excited, repeatedly saying,"Daddy, you're so great. I'm really happy today." No wonder she was so thrilled; it was the first time in her life that her father had spent her birthday with her.
The resort wasn't far from the city center, and after a little over half an hour, we arrived at our destination.
As Alice and I struggled to lift the camping gear from the trunk, Charles suddenly abandoned his usual cold demeanor. He left us behind and ran towards a woman in the distance. I stared for a long moment before recognizing her. It was Mina, our college classmate. It seemed her family was here for a getaway too.
Alice, noticing my distraction, tugged on my sleeve and whispered, "Mom, are you okay?" Snapping out of my daze, gave Alice an awkward smile."'m fine, sweetheart. Just remembered something. With that, Alice and I began unloading the car piece by piece, while Charles eagerly helped Mina set up her tent. Once everything was ready, I placed the cake I had prepared for Alice on the picnic mat. Just then, Charles returned from Mina's side. Alice's face lit up as she saw him "Daddy,I just learned to swim recently! Let me show you in the river."
She jumped into the water with enthusiasm. Being a playful child, she pretended to drown several times, hoping her father would rescue her. After being tricked once, Charles quickly caught on and stopped responding to her antics. Suddenly, Mina's voice called out from a distance,"Charles, I need your help! Loki hurt his ankle." As Charles stood up, ready to leave, I heard Alice's frantic cry for help."Mommy, help! I'm cramping!" Seeing the terror on my daughter's face, fear gripped me, but I couldn't swim. I grabbed Charles as he was about to walk away. "Charles, please check on Alice. She's cramping, and I can't swim,"I pleaded.
Charles glared at me, snarling,"Let go! Can't you hear Mina needs help? And as a doctor, I can't ignore someone in need." He glanced at Alice struggling in the water and scoffed, "she's probably faking it again. That kid would say anything for attention, just like her annoying mother." With that, Charles stormed off, leaving me in agony. I turned back to where Alice was, seeing her being swept further away by the strong current. My poor daughter was helplessly calling out for me. Desperate, I tried to wadle into the water to pull her to shore, but the force of the river was too strong and threatened to sweep me away. Spotting a long stick on the riverbank, I grabbed it and tossed it to Alice, urging her to hold on. Then I ran to find help.
I rushed to where Charles was with Mina. They were laughing and talking softly, a carefree expression on his face I hadn't seen in years. But I had no time to dwell on that. I walked up to him and said urgently, "Charles, Alice is in serious trouble. You need to save her. Charles, however, didn't seem to take my words seriously. Instead, he responded impatiently,"stop trying to trick me with Alice. Look at Loki's ankle,it's in bad shape. I don't have time for your games. I glanced at the boy, who only had a small cut on his ankle, the bleeding already stopped. Meanwhile, my daughter was facing a life-threatening situation. Desperation filled my voice as I tried to convey the gravity of the situation."Im not joking.I would never use my daughter's life to deceive you. Things are really urgent now, you must come with me,"I insisted, trying to pull Charles away. Just as I was about to drag him along, Mina chimed in with a sneer,"Wendy, after all these years, you still like to play the innocent and pitiful card. "My son's foot is seriously injured. He wants to be a soccer player someday. What if it doesn't heal properly?" Charles, who had been wavering, was immediately swayed by Mina's words. "Wendy, stop being unreasonable, okay? Today is Loki's birthday, and I want to give him a perfect birthday experience, alright?" "Now, go back and stay with Alice. Tell her I'll be there soon.
I understood that Charles still thought I was lying. But the longer my daughter was lying. But the longer my daughter stayed in the river, the more dangerous it became. Desperation overrode my pride, and I fell to my knees, sobbing and begging him. "Charles, I beg you, please come with me this time and check on Alice." "she's in real danger. The river surged suddenly. There's no other way. If we delay any longer, Alice will be swept away. "Please save her, please. She's our daughter. I can't imagine life without her." Mina, however, knocked my hand away from Charles. At that moment, her son started to cry out,"Mom, my foot hurts so much. Am I going to die?" Hearing his cries, Charles rushed over to check on him, not sparing me another glance.
