Chapter 3:No Responsibility, No Child

993 Words
Ami slowly closed her eyes, striving to steady her racing heart, yet calm eluded her. Perhaps it wasLiam’s intelligent, dark eyes replaying endlessly in her mind. Maybe she had caught the quiet helplessness buried deep within his gaze. Or could it be that she simply understood what he felt? If you cannot take responsibility, you should never bring a child into this world. Lorcan’s face drained of all color. In his twenty-eight years of life, no woman had ever dared speak to him in such a manner. Fine. Very well. This woman was extraordinary. “I’m heading over immediately.” Upon hearing his promise, Ami handed the cellphone back to Ao and walked away without another word. Lorcan stood frozen for a moment after the call cut off. Then he dialed another number. “Book me the earliest flight back to S City.” “Also, run a full background check on a woman named Ami. I want every detail on my desk by the time I land.” Inside the blood transfusion unit, a pale pink curtain was about to separate the two people staring across at one another on adjacent hospital beds. Ami parted her lips, ready to say something, yet the words never came. She watched the boy. Not a flicker of fear showed in his glossy black eyes. Clearly, this young boy namedLiam was incredibly resilient; he required no comforting words from her. What kind of parents could raise such a bright, perceptive child? That man must have accumulated tremendous good fortune in his past life to be blessed with such a sensible son. And yet, he was so utterly irresponsible. If it were not for the coincidence that she too possessed AB negative blood, she dared not imagine how graveLiam’s condition might have turned. As the curtain slid shut,Liam glanced toward Ami lying on the neighboring bed. He blinked, offered a faint smile, and moved his lips to utter barely audible words. “Thank you.” The transfusion proceeded smoothly. Once it finished,Liam drifted off to sleep. Ami had lost a significant volume of blood as the donor, so she remained resting on the hospital bed. Gazing at the small boy, tenderness stirred deep inside her chest—a mixture of pity, and the quiet ache of shared suffering. Two hours later, Lorcan arrived at the hospital. He spared a quick glance at the sleepingLiam before heading toward the staff lounge. On the drive over, Ao had already told him the donor who saved the boy was none other than Ami. He had not expected her to also have AB negative blood. Lorcan reached the lounge entrance precisely as Ami received approval to leave work early, her emergency blood donation the official reason. They collided right outside the doorway. “Sorry.” Well-mannered as always, Ami apologized instantly even though the collision was not her fault, her tone cool. But when she lifted her head and laid eyes on the man, the rest of her sentence died in her throat. He was towering, easily six feet one or taller. At only five feet four, Ami needed to tilt her chin upward just to meet his gaze. He wore a tailored white suit, carrying a faint scent of wine, as though he had stepped straight out of a cocktail reception. His expression remained neutral, yet his eyes burned with striking intensity, impossible to forget once seen. “Miss Ami.” His voice was deep, rich and mesmerizing, resonant as a cello’s melody, the kind of timbre capable of making hearts flutter on first hearing. Only a brief pause passed before composure settled back over Ami’s features, betraying no turmoil. Her thin lips parted, her tone icy. “Mr. Lorcan.” Having seenLiam’s face, matching him to the man standing before her required no guesswork. Father and son shared the same striking good looks; either would stand out instantly amid a crowd of thousands. Still, what was he doing here at this hour? Lorcan did not miss the confusion flickering across her eyes, though he chose not to address it directly. He spoke politely yet firmly. “Miss Ami, let us talk.” His voice stayed calm, weighted with an authority that brooked no refusal. It was precisely that unyielding air of command that grated on Ami. Her brows drew tight as she eyed him warily. What was there to discuss between them? Liam had already been transferred to the pediatric ward. They merely awaited the blood lab results to finalize a diagnosis, meaning the case was no longer her responsibility. If any connection lingered, it boiled down to her potential availability as a blood donor. Was that what he intended to discuss? “I will volunteer my blood without compensation if the need arises.” I saw no reason for further conversation between them. Lorcan shot her a glance, his tone softening slightly. “We’re here to talk about our marriage.” Shock washed over Ami, freezing her in place for a heartbeat. In an instant, the pieces clicked into place. Unmistakable panic flickered in her eyes as she stared at him. Her pale lips parted warily. “You’re Lorcan. The man I was supposed to meet for a blind date tomorrow?” That phone call she’d received in the lounge earlier had been from her family. She’d thought she had until tomorrow to brace herself for the encounter—never expecting him to appear before her like this, out of nowhere. It was impossible not to feel flustered. Lorcan caught every trace of her alarm and defensiveness. He smiled faintly, his tone calm and unhurried. “I don’t have much spare time. Since I’m already here, shall we find somewhere to talk?” Knowing she could not avoid this forever, Ami gave a slight nod. “There’s a café nearby, just a short walk from the hospital.” With that, she stepped past him and walked straight out.
