Chapter 4:I Refuse to Marry Him

908 Words
Lorcan followed Ami silently. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he watched her slender back. Neither exchanged a word along the way. They soon arrived at the café she had mentioned. Once seated, they simply ordered two cups of coffee. Silence stretched between them until the server set down their drinks. Ami lifted her mug and took small sips, her eyes studying Lorcan casually. He rested one hand around his cup and stirred the coffee with the other. It was an ordinary motion, yet he moved with an ineffable elegance. A faint smile lingered on his lips; his expression looked focused and warm, making it hard to tear one’s gaze away. Much as she resisted everything about who he was, she could not deny how outstanding he was. Hadn’t he claimed he lacked time? Then why did he seem so leisurely? Unwilling to waste time testing patience, Ami sipped her coffee once more. She set the mug down gently, met his eyes, and spoke coolly. “Third Young Master Lorcan, we are not suited for each other. I hope you will take the initiative to talk to my grandfather.” She wanted no delays, only a swift resolution. Lorcan’s stirring hand stilled. He slowly leaned back against his chair and lifted his gaze toward Ami. His expression was utterly unreadable; she could not guess what ran through his mind. He stared at her for a long moment before his rose-tinted lips parted. That deep, rich voice, akin to a cello’s melody, drifted over. “Are you always this blunt, Miss Ami?” “I merely state the core truth. I see no point for two complete strangers to marry solely for the benefit of both families. I do not consider myself noble enough for such a sacrifice.” “You are wrong. Marrying you will only bring benefits to the Ami family, and your family alone.” Ami was left speechless. She stared at the man across the table. He wore a warm smile, yet his words carried no warmth whatsoever. She found him impossible to decipher. Rumors described him as aloof, unruly and mysterious. No media outlet had ever printed a single piece of news about him, let alone published his photograph. Once a local newspaper ran a report concerning him; the publication vanished from S City the very next day. Even shrouded in secrecy, he remained an object of widespread intrigue. Third Young Master of the Lorcan Clan from the Imperial Capital, top decision-maker of CS International, S City’s largest conglomerate. His hands controlled the economic lifeline of S City and even half of China. If Third Young Master Lorcan so much as stirred, the whole of S City trembled. Setting aside his prestigious family status, how could her grandfather and elder brother possibly let go of a man with such immense wealth and power? Lorcan was completely right. This marriage would bring endless advantages exclusively to the Ami family. Ami fought the urge to curse herself. Her brows drew tight, her tone icy. “If that is the case, you must think marrying me is beneath you. Please tell my grandfather—” “Who said I consider marrying you beneath me?” Lorcan cut her off without hesitation, brows furrowed. This woman avoided him as if he were venom. In truth, it was she who seemed to scorn marrying him… She kept pushing his boundaries. Impressive. “I am set on marrying you.” His deep, mesmerizing voice carried unshakable authority. At his words, Ami’s hands trembled as she lifted her coffee cup to her lips, frozen mid-motion. Lorcan captured every shift of emotion on her face. He moistened his rose-hued lips, and that velvety cello-like tone sounded again. “Miss Ami, marrying me is your best option.” Ami snapped her head up and pulled the cup away from her mouth, staring at him in confusion. Spotting the confusion in her eyes, Lorcan smiled faintly. He leaned forward, closing the distance between them, and brought his lips close to her ear. His rose-tinted lips moved as he whispered a quick sentence… He drew back quickly afterward and leaned against his own chair once again. His whisper was so light and fleeting it barely seemed audible, yet Ami heard every word clearly. A shudder ran through her body. She lifted her eyes sharply toward him, wariness surging stronger than before. How did he know? She had never told anyone about this matter, not even her closest friend. Third Young Master Lorcan was truly unfathomable. She took a large gulp of coffee to calm her frayed nerves. Then she fixed Lorcan with a cold stare. “What do you want?” The implication hung plain: what terms came with marrying her? Lorcan locked eyes with her and said evenly, “WhenLiam is in need, you must come to his side the instant you are called.” Hearing this, the tension coiled inside Ami loosened abruptly. So all he wanted was her rare blood. Ami could not name exactly what she felt, a flicker of relief stirring inside. Could he possibly want her heart, or her person, through this marriage? Of course he only needed her blood! How had she failed to realize this sooner? Her nerves had gotten the better of her. Today, she had lost her composure not only aroundLiam, but also facing this man, whose looks rivaled that of a demon.
