Chapter 5:Must We Get Married?

1017 Words
Ami let out a soft breath. When she lifted her gaze back to Lorcan, her features settled into unruffled calm. Her thin lips parted as she spoke slowly. “Third Young Master Lorcan. Even if you do not marry me, I will volunteer my blood forLiam. Knowing that, are you still set on wedding me?” She was no fool. Once her head cleared, she saw the truth plainly. Even without her,Liam would never run out of blood supplies. She had not known the boy’s identity before, but she knew it now. A steady supply of AB negative blood might be hard for ordinary people to secure, yet for Lorcan, it was never a problem. That left her questioning his motives for marriage. But the man clearly had no intention of explaining. Lorcan tracked the shift in her expression, reading every thought crossing her mind. His rose-tinted lips parted. “You doubt me?” His voice turned cold, his gaze sharp and piercing. Before she could reply, he pulled out cash and set two banknotes on the table. He stood abruptly, seized Ami’s hand, and dragged her toward the door. Panic flickered through her. His grip clamped tight, leaving no room for her to pull free. She hurried to keep pace, urgency lacing her tone. “Where are you taking me?” Lorcan did not glance back, uttering three brisk words. “The Civil Affairs Bureau.” Those plain three sentences stunned Ami. She stared at his profile and asked blankly, “What are we going there for?” Lorcan hauled her outside and spun to face her with a bright, knowing smile. He countered instead of answering. “What do you think we’re going there for?” Seeing her dazed look stirred an inexplicable surge of amusement in him. He towed her all the way to the car and urged her into the passenger seat. She watched the tall, devastatingly handsome man circle the vehicle with effortless grace and sink into the driver’s seat beside her. Next, he leaned over to fasten her seatbelt. Everything unfolded so fast it felt like a dream. Lorcan buckled his own seatbelt, then turned to fix his eyes on her, a devilish smile playing on his lips. “We’re heading to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get our marriage license.” Without giving her a single second to collect herself, he hit the gas, and the car surged forward. Outside the Civil Affairs Bureau entrance, Ami wrenched her hand free. She twisted her fingers together and stared down at her feet, unease coiling inside her chest. She still could not fathom how she had ended up here with a man she had known for less than an hour. Were they truly about to sign for a marriage license? They were strangers. They knew nothing of one another. There was no foundation of affection between them. No matter how cool and detached a woman might be, she would hesitate when facing a decision that shaped her entire life. Lorcan studied the young woman before him. He could feel her tension, yet he would not grant her a chance to back out. He stepped forward, took hold of her hand, and forced her to meet his eyes. “Ami. Marry me, and I will give you the life you want. No one will dare lay a finger on any woman who belongs to Lorcan.” Ami’s body went rigid. Her gaze stayed clear, marked by obvious internal conflict. Her delicate lips trembled. At last, she spoke with unwavering resolve. “Lorcan. I never planned to marry a stranger and build a real marital life. If…” “If you can accept a marriage without love, where we lead separate lives without interfering in each other’s affairs, we walk inside. If you cannot… then let us pretend we never met today.” A shadow swept across Lorcan’s eyes. His face turned icy, his tone frigid. “What do you mean, a marriage without love, with no entanglement between us?” Ami met his stare without flinching. She sensed his frosty anger, yet her pride forbade her from shrinking away. She knew full well he understood, but since he had asked, she did not mind spelling everything out plainly. “We only sign a legal document. To put it bluntly, it is a marriage in name only, set to last two years. Over those two years, you may carry on with your life, and I will not meddle.” “You may see other women or keep lovers, so long as you do not cross the line. Meanwhile, I will play the part of your wife, look after your son, and steer clear of inappropriate entanglements with other men until our arrangement ends.” “If you agree, we go in and get our license right now.” She paused, resolve hardening in her eyes. “Of course. If you find someone you love within these two years, we can dissolve our marriage at any time. If you do not, we get divorced once the two years are up.” “When that day comes, you will be your own person, and I will be mine. Rest assured, I will not claim a single cent of your assets. Nor will I demand you grant the Ami family any favors for my sake.” “Because I am simply me, and the Ami family is the Ami family. Once I marry you, all ties between me and the Ami household will be severed. I will only ever be your wife.” Ami rushed through her lengthy proposal, a faint flush rising to her cheeks. Her limpid eyes locked steadily on Lorcan as she waited for his response. Lorcan’s complexion paled further and further as he listened to her cold terms. Only once she finished speaking did the taut set of his features ease slightly. His gaze softened as it settled on her. He pressed his lips together and said solemnly, “I can accept your terms, yet I have one demand of my own.”
