Chapter 8:Playing the Victim

860 Words
What drew Ami’s attention most was the woman’s slightly swollen belly—clearly five to six months into her pregnancy. She rested one hand gently on her lower back and the other over her bump, taking every step with extreme caution. Perhaps every mother-to-be cherished her child with such tender care. Ami finished washing her hands and prepared to leave. Yet the moment she turned around, the pregnant woman let out a sudden gasp, losing her balance and tipping toward the floor. Without hesitation, Ami reached out swiftly to steady her. Possessing quicker reflexes than most, she caught the woman just in time. The woman’s face remained deathly pale even after she stood firm. She must have been terrified a moment ago. “Are you alright? Your fetus is relatively stable at this stage, but I’d suggest you never go out alone if you can help it.” Ami’s tone was calm, softened by a rare warmth for this anxious mother and her unborn child. The pregnant woman let out a shaky breath, looked up at Ami, and smiled gently. “Thank you.” Only then did Ami get a clear look at her face. She was not strikingly beautiful, and pregnancy had left her with a soft roundness, yet there was no denying her gentle, refined grace. Her clothing was made of premium fabric, and though she wore little jewelry, the watch on her wrist was undeniably luxurious. Naturally, anyone dining at Scenic Splendor was far from ordinary. Her face was filled with sincere gratitude, but Ami thought nothing of it. As a doctor, helping others came as second nature to her. “No need to thank me.” “I would have fallen hard without you. I truly appreciate it.” She stroked her belly softly, her gaze melting with tenderness as she looked down. “You were quite frightened just now,” Ami said gently. “Are you feeling any discomfort at all? I’m a doctor—you can tell me if anything hurts.” The woman’s complexion had been ghastly pale earlier, and still lacked color now. Though Ami was not one for idle conversation, her medical instinct kept her from turning a blind eye to someone in distress. The pregnant woman looked up and smiled softly. “I’m fine now. I was just badly scared, but I’m alright thanks to you.” “That’s good.” Ami nodded faintly. “Your skin is very pale, which suggests mild anemia. Get plenty of rest, and avoid crowded, enclosed spaces. It’s better for the baby.” “My doctor told me the same thing. Thank you for your concern.” The woman smiled warmly. “I’m Muyun. Which hospital do you work at?” Sensing her genuine kindness, Ami offered a faint smile. “Ami. I work at the Second City ’s Hospital.” She always kept her words brief whenever possible. Muyun’s eyes lit up slightly. “I get my prenatal checks there too. How come I’ve never seen you?” “I’m in the emergency department.” Ami glanced toward the door. She had been gone quite a while—Lorcan might be looking for her. Sensing her hurry, Muyun smiled gently. “Dr. Ami, I’ll look for you next time I’m at the hospital. You can go if you’re busy.” “I’ll take my leave then.” Ami was inherently reserved and disliked conversing with strangers. She would never have spoken this much if Muyun had not been so gentle and well-mannered. Yet the second she turned to leave, a violent force crashed straight into her. “Ugh—” Caught completely off guard, Ami was knocked off her feet and crashed heavily to the ground. She had bumped into something, or someone, mid-fall. “Sis!” A frantic female voice rang out. She had been wearing heels—not overly tall ones, but the sudden, forceful collision twisted her ankle sharply. A piercing pain shot through her foot. She tried to push herself up, only to collapse back down from the agony. “Sis, are you okay?” Ami looked up to see a gaudily dressed girl staring anxiously at Muyun. This was the person who had crashed into her without warning. And the thing she had bumped into while falling… must have been Muyun. “Watch where you’re walking! You almost knocked my sister over!” Ami had met unreasonable people before, but never one so brazen. The girl had crashed into her first, yet she wasplaying the victim and laying all the blame on others. Muyun’s expression shifted. She quickly pulled her sister’s hand away and leaned toward Ami anxiously. “Dr. Ami, are you hurt?” Before she could help Ami up, her sister tugged her back. “Sis, don’t touch her! She’s totally fine! If it weren’t for her, you would’ve never almost fallen. Just ignore her!” The girl’s shrill, noisy voice stood in stark contrast to Muyun’s gentle tone. They were sisters, yet their personalities were worlds apart. How could anyone get hit like this and walk away unharmed? She should try it for herself.
