Ami’s mood soured instantly at the girl’s insolent words. Still, she could not take her frustration out on the pregnant Muyun.
She waved a hand faintly, her tone calm and restrained. “MissMuyun, you’ve just been startled. Don’t strain yourself. I can get up on my own.”
She tried pushing herself up again, but her ankle throbbed with unbearable pain. She failed to stand after several attempts.
Watching her struggle, Muyun grew anxious. She tugged her sister’s sleeve gently. “Ruxue, go help Dr. Ami up.”
“Sis!” Ruxue pouted, looking at Ami with undisguised disdain. “I clearly heard you gasp earlier! This woman must have bumped into you!”
“She nearly knocked you down a second time! If I hadn’t caught you in time, you would’ve fallen flat on the floor! Why are you still being so kind to her and making me help her?”
“Ruxue!” Muyun cut her off sharply. Her already pale face drained of all color from anger. “It’s not what you think. Go help Dr. Ami at once.” Remembering her condition as a pregnant woman and forcing herself not to flare up, her tone softened again.
“Sis!” Ruxue stamped her foot, feigning grievance. “You’ve never spoken to me so harshly before, and now you’re yelling at me for this stranger! I’m telling Dad!”
Ami’s complexion turned colder listening to their bickering. She gritted her teeth, struggled one last time, and finally stood upright.
She dared not put any weight on her twisted ankle, forcing her full body weight onto her uninjured left foot.
She pinned Ruxue with a frigid glare, her voice sharp and icy. “Second Miss Ruxue, you have such a vivid imagination. It’s truly a waste not to become a screenwriter.”
Ruxue’s face flushed bright red, shooting a furious look at Ami. It was only then that she truly noticed the woman before her—stunningly beautiful, far more gorgeous than any A-list celebrity she had ever seen.
Jealousy flared up instantly.
It was a woman’s nature to envy, especially for a spoiled rich girl like Ruxue. She could not stand the fact that Ami outshone her in looks and dared to mock her openly.
Her face turned pale with rage. She let out a cold snort. “Don’t think you’re something special just because you’re pretty enough to hook up with some rich old man and dine at a fancy place like this. Mess with me today, and you’ll regret it!”
“At least I have the looks to rely on.” Ami swept her a lazy glance, her tone unhurried and taunting. “But I wonder… does anyone even spare a second glance at your looks, Second Miss Lin?”
This wildcat was not one to be bullied. Ami had never been the docile type. She would never swallow an insult without fighting back.
She could not help but wonder what expression that man would wear if he heard Ruxue calling him a rich old man. It would surely be priceless.
Blazing with fury, Ruxue stepped forward without hesitation, raising her hand to slap Ami across the face.
*Slap!*
“Ah!”
“You dared to hit me!” Ruxue clutched her cheek, staring at Ami in utter disbelief.
She could not fathom how Ami had moved so fast. Her hand had been inches from Ami’s face, yet the woman had struck first, landing a crisp slap on her cheek.
Ami had not used much strength. She had simply refused to be bullied and preempted the attack.
Being trampled on and letting others walk all over her had never been her style.
“You hit me! How dare you hit me!” Having never been struck by anyone in her life, Ruxue froze for a second before flying into a rage and charging straight at Ami.
Ami’s right ankle was badly sprained, leaving her entirely reliant on her left foot. She knew Ruxue was charging with full force; if she got tackled, she would fall hard and hurt herself severely.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she twisted her body and dodged nimbly.
Blessed with sharp reflexes since childhood, she evaded the attack perfectly.
“Ah!” Ruxue screamed again.
This time her cry came from crashing heavily onto the floor.
“Ugh… it hurts!”
Now it was Ruxue’s turn to be unable to get up. She had charged forward with tremendous force, and with Ami’s quick dodge, all that momentum landed entirely on herself.
It was simply karma for her own misdeeds.
Ami felt no sympathy for a spoiled, unreasonable rich girl like Ruxue. She would never pity someone who was arrogant yet incapable of backing up their attitude.
She watched Ruxue wail on the ground without a shred of the saintly mercy to go help her up.
Instead, she turned to Muyun, her tone cold and distant. “Miss Muyun, I’ll take my leave. Goodbye.”
Preferably forever. One unpleasant encounter like this was more than enough.
She had initially felt a faint warmth toward the gentle, maternal Muyun, but that fleeting goodwill was now completely gone.
