All the dishes arrived. The servers quietly withdrew and pulled the door shut behind them.
Trapped beneath him, Ami stared at his impossibly handsome, impassive face. When her gaze locked onto his eyes, heavy with silent danger, her breath caught in her throat.
She shrank back against the chair, only to realize there was nowhere left to retreat. She looked up at him and whispered, “What do you want?”
If she had known he could be this menacing, she would never have spoken sharply to him earlier… No—if she had known how dangerous he truly was, she would never have agreed to marry him at all!
Lorcan drank in her flustered expression and her naturally rosy lips. Then he leaned down and pressed his mouth to hers.
It was a featherlight touch, barely worthy of being called a kiss, nothing more than his lips brushing against hers. His lips burned hot; hers were cool.
He pulled away quickly, gazing at her stunned form, his voice rough. “You forgot the promise you made me again. Every time you forget, I will kiss you once.”
A faint smile tugged at his lips. This arrangement suited him fine. After all, she tasted quite pleasant.
Ami’s mind went blank. She remained frozen for a full minute after the unexpected kiss and his baffling words.
By the time she recovered, Lorcan had settled into the chair beside her, casually pouring wine into a stemmed glass.
She whirled to glare at him. “Lorcan—you!” Recalling his earlier threat, she bit back the urge to shout his full name.
Lorcan set down the wine bottle gently and looked at her with a soft smile. “What about me? Didn’t you call me shameless? If I don’t act shamelessly now, wouldn’t I be letting your insult go to waste?”
Ami was utterly defeated. This man was simply unreasonable. Instead of growing angry at being called shameless, he was determined to prove the accusation true.
He really was shameless!
Rumors claimed Third Young Master Lorcan was aloof and untamed. How could the man before her be so stubbornly affectionate? People said he maintained rigid standards toward women. So why had he kissed her of his own will?
Inwardly, she poured scorn on whoever had started those baseless rumors.
She lifted her head to see Lorcan sipping red wine as if nothing had happened, and anger gnawed at her.
Somewhere along the way, he had unbuttoned another button on his black shirt, revealing a sliver of his chest. His skin, a shade lighter than sun-kissed wheat, looked strong and healthy.
He set down the wine glass, tilted his head to reach for the bottle and refill it. A simple motion, yet he carried it with innate elegance and nobility.
Bathed in warm yellow lamplight, he seemed wrapped in a faint golden glow, impossible to look away from.
“Would you like a drink?” Lorcan lifted the bottle and asked.
His deep, velvety voice jolted her back to reality. She blinked, and once more found herself drowning in his profound eyes.
She was alarmed. When had her self-control grown so weak that she could stare transfixed at a man?
She shot him a sharp glare, her tone icy. “No.” He would not get her drunk, not a chance.
Lorcan smiled faintly, setting the bottle aside. He picked up his chopsticks and placed a shrimp onto her plate.
“The food here is excellent. Try it.”
He acted as if he had not tormented her moments before, and Ami seethed silently.
Very well. She would channel her frustration into conquering these expensive dishes.
To her surprise, every bite was incredible. Her foul mood, soured by Lorcan’s antics, lifted amid the delicious meal.
Throughout dinner, Lorcan kept piling food onto her plate, and she ate steadily. For a time, they shared a surprisingly harmonious atmosphere.
Trouble resurfaced the moment they finished eating and prepared to leave.
Ami watched Lorcan step forward, ready to lift her into his arms. She hurried to speak. “Lor, I can walk on my own. Let me try, please?”
Knowing she could not force him, she softened her voice to a gentle plea.
Lorcan frowned slightly. “Are you certain you can manage?”
“Mm.” She nodded.
He considered it, still uneasy. “You may walk by yourself, but I have to support you.”
She hated the thought of him holding her, yet it was preferable to being carried through the dining hall. Judging by his resolute tone, compromise was non-negotiable, so she nodded. “Alright.”
Lorcan slipped one arm around her waist, taking most of her weight onto himself as he guided her carefully outside.
Ami’s body stiffened at this sudden intimacy with a man. She endured it, desperate to reach the lobby exit quickly.
She kept her head lowered, hoping to avoid drawing attention.
But trouble sought her out, even when she did not seek trouble.
“Well, well. Look who’s being so brazen! Dr. Ami, of all people. Clinging to a man out here in broad daylight—truly something to behold, isn’t it?”
