Now Marlowe has to decide if that includes her, or if she’s just the next asset he’s willing to burn to win.Two years. One contract. The Price of staying Al
The hallway smelled like antiseptic and fear. Marlowe Reyes gripped the folder against her chest, knuckles white, as Dr. Halloway delivered the words that dropped the floor out from under her. “The Vane Foundation grant was terminated this morning. Effective immediately.” He wouldn’t meet her eyes. “Without it, we can’t proceed with Ruby’s transplant. I’m sorry.” “Terminated?” Her voice cracked. “She’s scheduled for Thursday. You said she was stable enough. You said” “I know what I said.” He glanced past her shoulder, toward the elevator bank, and something in his face shifted. Careful. Almost afraid. “You should ask him.” Marlowe turned. Cassius Vane stepped out of the elevator like he owned the building, because he did, in every way that mattered to the people signing checks in this hospital. Black suit, no tie, sleeves rolled to the forearm like he’d come straight from tearing something apart. He carried a single folder, thin, deliberate. “Mr. Vane.” Halloway’s voice went thin. “I wasn’t expecting” “You weren’t supposed to be in this conversation at all.” Cassius didn’t look at the doctor. His eyes were already on Marlowe, and they stayed there, unblinking, assessing her like she was a line item he’d been waiting to close. “Give us the room.” Halloway left without another word. “You pulled the funding.” Marlowe’s hands were shaking now, and she hated that he could see it. “My sister’s surgery is in three days. You pulled it three days before.” “I pulled it the moment my legal team confirmed your father died owing my company two point three million dollars he never intended to repay.” His tone didn’t rise. It didn’t need to. “That debt is now yours. Ruby’s treatment was never a grant, Ms. Reyes. It was leverage your father built for himself and never used. I’m simply collecting.” “She’s eleven.” The words came out ragged. “She has nothing to do with what my father did.” “No. She doesn’t.” He opened the folder and held it out, close enough that she could smell cedar and something colder underneath it. “But you do. And I have a proposal that solves both our problems.” She didn’t take it. “I’m not signing anything from you.” “You will.” Not a threat. A fact, stated the way he probably stated quarterly earnings. “Because in that folder is a marriage contract, and it’s the only document in existence that reinstates Ruby’s funding today. Not next week, after your lawyer reads every clause. Today. The moment you sign it.” Marlowe’s pulse roared in her ears. “Marriage. To you.” “To me.” Something moved behind his eyes, brief and unreadable, gone before she could name it. “Two years. Full medical coverage for your sister, no conditions, no revocation clause your father would have thought to hide from you. In exchange, you become my wife in every way that matters publicly.” “And privately?” He stepped closer, close enough that she had to tip her head back to hold his gaze, close enough that the folder pressed against her ribs like a blade waiting to be used. “Privately,” Cassius said, “you’ll learn exactly how much I intend to collect.” Before she could answer, her phone buzzed against her hip. She glanced down. Ruby’s name lit the screen, and underneath it, a text from the nurse’s station: Come now. She’s asking for you. Marlowe’s stomach dropped. Cassius saw it too. “Something wrong?” “I have to go.” She was already moving past him toward Ruby’s room. He caught her wrist, not hard, but immovable. “The offer expires when I leave this hospital. Sign now, and I make one call. Ruby’s procedure goes forward tonight instead of Thursday. Wait, and you’re gambling with hours you don’t have.” Marlowe looked at the folder. Looked at her sister’s door down the hall. Looked at the man who’d just turned her worst day into a transaction. She grabbed the pen.
