SELENA’S POV "Where am I?" Darkness closed in on me, darkness that did not end, and a chill fog crept around my feet like outstretched fingers. I moved slowly, but the ground I walked upon was not solid, as if I walked upon space. "Aya?" I tried to summon my wolf but i got nothing in response. My heart broke into torment. My wolf did not leave me. She would never, definitely not like this. "Selena Ravenwood," a soft voice cut through the darkness, clear and commanding. I looked around locate its source and then- She appeared right in front of me. A woman whose face glowed as if she were the embodiment of the moon, in resplendent silver silk that flowed under her every movement. Fluid metal hair, curled, and silver-colored eyes blazed at night, leaving me to embers with a shiver that ran through my spine. "W-who are you?" I stuttered, my words twisted in my throat. She smiled, a star-filled grin. "I am the Moon Goddess." I stared, stunned and unbelieving conflict raging inside me. The Goddess of the Moon. Our goddess whom we worshiped. Mother of our people. Standing before me. I bowed my head before meeting her gaze again. "Why am I here? Am I dead?” I recalled the pain, knife lodged in my stomach, blood oozing around me, Lucian screaming for me— I clenched my hands into fists. Lucian. The Moon Goddess approached, tilting her head to one side. "This is where souls that have burden and regrets come to when they die," she sighed. "And you, Selena, have too much regret in your heart." I swallowed thickly, and I did not know what to say. She was right. There were too many things that caused remorse. I should have been smart. I should have been faster. I should have rescued Caius. Teardrops fell from my eyes, but I swallowed what raged inside me. "What do I do now?" My voice barely escaped beyond the end of a whisper. "I am here to release you into peace, child. So you can go on." I snarled at her as I stumbled. "Go on where?" Her silver eyes glinted as she smiled. "I will provide you with a new life. A life where you will be loved, cherished. Where your family and your mate will cherish you. But," she stammered. "You will not remember this life. This pain. It will be erased from your memory." The thought was so seductive. Second chance. Life without the tragedy, the betrayal at the hands of Lucian. And something inside me moved, anyway. "And what about Lucian?" I interrupted, growling. "He gets away with it all? After all he did? After he murdered Caius?" The Moon Goddess did not respond. I seethed with anger, fought against the numbness spreading up towards me. "No," I vowed. "He doesn’t get to walk free. He killed Caius, my mate. He killed me! And you want me to forget all this? Let him live out the rest of his days in peace?" "Revenge is a dark road, Selena," she warned. "Then I'll do it," I growled. "I don't want peace. I want revenge." She breathed in, as though she'd been holding it since standing there waiting for me to say something. "Are you sure that this is the choice you'd like to make?" "Yes." "You can't take it back," she warned. "You'll be left with your choice, and you won't be able to do anything if you regret it." "I don't care." I curled my fists within my palms. "Take me back." The Moon Goddess stared at me for a moment, probably waiting to see if I would change my mind. She eventually nodded. "Very well. Remember, revenge is a dark path and it might end up consuming you.” I took a deep breath, and her words settled within me, as heavy as lead. I did not mind. My will was determined. She grasped my hand and held tight, and a wave of silver light enveloped me. My last memory of the night when the darkness descended was the whisper of her gentle voice on the breeze— "Then rise, Selena Ravenwood. Rewrite your fate." "Caius!" I shouted, jerking up in bed with a shudder, panting down tiny, frightened breaths. My room. I was home. I winced remembering everything that happened. And I was here. Alive. Breathing. I jerked my head to the nightstand beside me, broad eyes staring at the clock. The moon Goddess had sent back to the day I died, Two hours before my date with Caius. My heart swelled with happiness. She had given me a chance to save him. Standing up from the bed, I grabbed the first dress I could lay hands on. I dressed up as fast as I could and ran out the door. I did not bother to go to the restaurant this time. I made my way straight to Caius' house, hoping that I would arrive there in time to stop Lucian. The front door was slightly open. I went in and ran upstairs two steps at a time. I was greeted by their sounds when I burst into the room. "You don't understand, Lucian!" Caius was angry. "No, you don't understand," Lucian shouted. "This is a bad decision you are about to take. It’s not worth it.” I strode in, out of breath. The two men turned to me, their faces angry. My gaze fell on the knife on the table. The same knife which had been used on— No. Not now. "Is something wrong?" I asked, trying so hard to hide the fear in my voice. Lucian's face turned white as dried pomegranate, his face burning with rage as he glared at Caius with a fierce face, then turned and strode away without a word. Caius cursed under his breath, his hair falling back off his face. "Selena, I thought we were meeting at the restaurant.." "I know but I was too eager to see you," I answered, moving to stand directly in front of him. "Caius, what happened? Why did Lucian—" "It's nothing," he interrupted, attempting a smile. "Let's forget about it, okay? I don't want to spoil our night." “Okay.” I smiled, a satisfied smile because I was able to save him. I am never going to lose him. I am going to have him in my line of sight every second if I must. We arrived at the restaurant in Caius' car and we were directed to our reserved seat. They served us our meal and we ate while having small talks about how our week has been. "Selena," Caius called but there was something in his tone that made me feel unease. "There's something I have to tell you." My heart racing, I couldn't help but grin. Was it what I had been waiting for? Is he finally going to ask me to be his Luna? "Okay. What is it?" I placed my cutlery on the plate, giving him my full attention. He hesitated and drew a deep nervous breath, bending his head down for an instant before his eyes met mine again. His mask was firmly in place. "We can't be together, Selena.” My heart stopped for a moment and I waited for him to laugh at my face and say it was a joke. But his next sentence came as a dagger stove deep into my heart. "I, Caius Reynolds, reject Selena Ravenwood as my mate." And just like that, my second chance stared back at me like a sick joke.
