Chapter 1: Welcome to Campus
Chrissy’s pov
“Beep, beep, beep!”my alarm clock rings.
I turned around in bed.
I try to find a more comfortable position.
“Oh my gosh”,I say literally jumping out of bed.
Today is a school day.
My first day and I am going to be so late.
It is 7:31 now and my class starts by 8am.
I start getting ready for the class.
I packed my bag and ironed the day before.
That was my only luck at the moment.
The time was currently after 8 am.
I can officially say I am late.
I grabbed a slice of toast on my way out.
I was so devastated, this is my first day and I am late.
After much haste, I made it to class.
How on earth did the lecture hall only have one entrance.
There was only one thing to do at this point and that was to sneak in.
Things must be different here in Spain.
“So I have to go through the front entrance?”, I think to myself.
I took a few breaths in and walked into the lecture hall, after a few steps in I was stopped by the professor .
He had caught me in the act of sneaking quietly to a nearby seat.
“You there!”, he says in a very loud and commanding tone.
Soon the whole class turns to look in my direction.
Gosh I hate this kind of attention, I feel like melting into the ground.
“Are you just coming to class?”, he asks sternly
“I..I”, I stutter trying to explain myself.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath and explain myself.
“I am a transfer student sir”, I say after much struggle.
“Still that doesn’t excuse your lateness, miss?”, he says, asking for my name indirectly.
I quickly answer,”Williams sir,Chrissy Williams”
“It won’t happen again sir, my sincere apologies”, I say remorsefully.
He signals me to take a seat and I respond by moving quickly.
The whole class was still looking at me, this was a very bad first impression to the class.
I settle into the class quickly and I follow up immediately.
“So let’s continue this lecture shall we, but first I have a question”, the professor says with a brief pause.
“Do you think objectivity in journalism is achievable or merely ideal?”, he says while
gathering the attention of every student in this hall.
“ I do think it’s achievable because Journalists are trained to report facts without bias, so if they follow professional ethics, they can remain objective.”
“ A fair answer Caleb, anyone else?”, the professor scans the hall for another attempt.
Just as he was about to give up I let the answer escape my lips.
“ Yes I agree that objectivity is the goal sir, but I don’t think it’s something a journalist can fully achieve”, I say catching his attention fully.
“A brilliant answer Miss Williams, please go on”, he says looking really intrigued.
I answer the question and see a slight grin across his face.
He looks at me with interest.
“ I think the profession is going to suit you well, miss umm…Chrissy”, the professor says.
The bell rings and that signals the ending of the class.
Class has been dismissed and everyone is off to the next class.
As I was about to leave the class,I felt someone’s hand hold me back.
His hands were so firm on me, I looked up to see his face and I was awe struck.
He looks so handsome, I didn’t get to see him clearly when he was answering the question.
I could see all his features. He was really up close to me.
His perfectly chiseled jaw.
Dark hair that had a volume like I had never seen before.
His eyes were like a magnet that pulled me in.
It was the boy that answered that question in class today.
I spun around to face his direction fully, expecting an answer to why he pulled me back.
“Hi am Caleb”, he says, putting his hands out for a shake.
“Nice to meet you Caleb, i am ch..r”, I say taking his hands.
“Chrissy”,he said before I could finish.
I look at him with curiosity on how he knew my name but then who wouldn’t know my name after the embarrassing event that took place earlier this morning.
“Your answer in class was good by the way”, he says, breaking the second long silence.
“I would love to get to know you”, he says with a smile.
“I think that would be nice”, I responded, staring into his eyes.
I started to feel nervous .
No one had ever said they would love to know me.
There wasn’t much to know about me.
“Would you like to hangout this weekend”, he says with a smile.
“Yes”,I blurted, a little too desperate.
“That would be nice”, he says.
He hands me his phone.
My mouth almost drops ajar, he wants me to put my number.
I pressed every digit eagerly.
I made sure the number was correctly inputted.
I return his phone.
“So see you this weekend”,he says, adjusting his bag.
“Yes”,I said with a smile.
“So I was wondering if you could show me the way to the next class ?”.
“Sure, I was about heading there, just wanted to introduce myself”, he says.
The next class went fine.
This school was actually nice and well structured.
On just my first day,I have met so many wonderful people,Caleb being one of them.
I got back to my dorm later that afternoon.
It was a bit stressful, because after class I had to finish some processes for my tuition payment.
It involved a lot of confirmations and printing.
It was a lot,I only had sleep on my mind.
As soon as I got back to the dorm,I freshened up and slept off.
I was in the kitchen,I had just cut my finger with the knife.
My mom rushed in with the first aid box and sprung into action like always.
I remember how she found it hard to forgive herself every time I got hurt.
“How did you cut your finger Chrissy?”,she asked with tears in her eyes.
I woke up, it was just a dream, it wasn’t real.
I started to tear up.
She always blamed herself each time I got hurt.
She was never at fault for any of my hurt until now.
The day that changed my life forever.
The day that taught me to carry a pain along my side.
The day my mom died.
