The courtroom was silent. Not the ordinary kind of silence that came before a judge entered, but the heavy silence that settled when everyone knew a single sentence could change a person's life forever. Amelia Hayes rose to her feet. She adjusted the sleeve of her navy-blue blazer before picking up a file from the polished wooden table. At twenty-four, she was one of the youngest criminal defense lawyers to argue a case in the city's High Court. Many doubted she belonged there. She had stopped caring what people thought a long time ago. "Your Honor," Amelia began confidently, "the prosecution has built its case on assumptions rather than evidence." The prosecutor smirked. Amelia ignored him. "There is no witness who directly places my client at the scene. The fingerprints recovered from the weapon do not match his, and the security footage presented by the prosecution is incomplete." She walked slowly across the courtroom. Every juror followed her with their eyes. "If we allow assumptions to replace proof, then none of us is safe." A murmur spread through the room. The judge raised a hand. "Order." Amelia stopped in front of the jury. "The law exists to protect the innocent-even when public opinion has already declared someone guilty." She returned to her seat. The courtroom remained quiet until the judge announced a short recess. As people stood, reporters rushed outside to send breaking news. Amelia closed her file and let out a slow breath. "Nice speech." She looked up. Her client, Victor Marino, forced a weak smile. "I almost believed I was innocent." Amelia frowned. "That's not funny." Victor chuckled softly, but there was no humor in his eyes. For weeks she had noticed something strange about him. He wasn't afraid of prison. He was afraid of someone else. "You've barely spoken since the trial started," Amelia said quietly. Victor looked toward the courtroom doors, making sure no one was listening. "They're watching." "Who?" He swallowed. "I made a mistake." "What kind of mistake?" Before he could answer, two correctional officers approached. "Time to return to holding." Victor stood. Then he leaned closer until only Amelia could hear him. "If I don't make it to tomorrow's hearing..." His voice trembled. "...don't trust the police." Amelia stared at him. "What do you mean?" He looked as though he wanted to say more. Instead, one of the officers grabbed his arm. "Move." Victor looked back one last time. There was fear in his eyes. Real fear. A chill ran down Amelia's spine as she watched him disappear through the courtroom doors. --- Outside the courthouse, rain had begun to fall. Amelia opened her umbrella and walked toward the parking lot. Her phone buzzed. Sophia Carter. Her best friend. "Please tell me you're finished," Sophia said the moment Amelia answered. "Barely." "I've been waiting forty minutes." "I told you court sessions never end on time." Sophia laughed. "Come to dinner." "I still have paperwork." "You always have paperwork." "Occupational hazard." Sophia sighed dramatically. "One day you're going to marry those case files." "I'd rather not." "Seven o'clock." "Sophia-" "No excuses." The call ended before Amelia could protest. She smiled despite herself. Sophia had been her best friend since university. Whenever work became overwhelming, Sophia somehow managed to drag her back into the real world. Amelia unlocked her car and placed her briefcase on the passenger seat. Before starting the engine, she glanced at Victor's file. Something about his warning bothered her. "Don't trust the police." It didn't make sense. Unless... No. She was reading too much into it. --- That evening, Amelia arrived at a small Italian restaurant. Sophia was already waiting. "There she is!" Sophia grinned. "The city's busiest lawyer." Amelia laughed as they hugged. "I missed you." "You've been hiding in court for two weeks." "Court doesn't exactly give vacation days." Dinner passed quickly. They talked about university memories, impossible clients, and Sophia's latest attempt at online dating. For the first time in days, Amelia relaxed. Until her phone rang. Unknown Number. She hesitated before answering. "Hello?" No response. Only breathing. Then... A man's voice. Low. Cold. "Walk away from Victor Marino." Amelia froze. "Who is this?" "Forget the case." The line went dead. She stared at the phone. Sophia frowned. "Amelia?" "...I think someone just threatened me." At that exact moment... Breaking news flashed across the television mounted above the restaurant bar. PRISONER FOUND DEAD INSIDE CITY DETENTION CENTER. The screen changed. Victor Marino's photograph filled the television. Amelia's heart stopped. Her client... ...had been murdered.
