Chapter1
The Alpha’s Cruel Rejection
Selene’s POV
Tell me you do not feel it. My voice quakes as I fix my gaze on Kieran's icy, cutting silver eyes. My heart feels as though it could break from how fiercely it pounds.
The Moonlit Gala's huge ballroom whirl around me, the sparkling chandeliers and gorgeous people vanishing into just a blur. He smells earthy, black spice, and something very strong, seductive, smothering.
My Alpha, my employer, Kieran Blackwood, my destined mate.
Like a living creature, I can feel the link thrumming between us dragging me towards him with an intensity that steals my breath. But Kieran? He is still, his mouth tightly cinched allowing me to hear his teeth grinding.
And then he states it.
"I reject you."
Land like a knife to my chest.
"No." My voice hardly whispers at all. I get closer; my hand reaches out naturally. "You lie here. You feel it, as I do. Bond—"*
"I said, Selene; I don't want you." Now his voice is colder and more exact, definitive. "I reject you."
The suffering arrives right away, a scorching inferno tearing over my soul. My knees collapse and I gasp as the rejection bond flashes across me like lightning.
Individuals turn to gaze. Whispers float throughout the audience.
"Does she just…"
"Was she... rejected?"
My eyesight waivers. Though I can't breathe, I want to shout, demand explanations, and ask him to undo it.
Kieran is not frugal. His face is stone; his silver eyes are not readable.
I find it difficult. For what reason?
"Why are you engaging in this?" Raw and shattered, my voice breaks.
Something dark, almost terrible flashes in his gaze, but it's gone before I could hold on to it.
"Because I neither need a weak mate." His comments are savage, nasty, delivered with lethal accuracy. "I don't want a secretary hovering about like some sad dreamer. For me, Selene, you are nothing. Never were you."
The earth gives way under me.
Our relationship has broken. I sense it fraying inside me like ripped strands.
I wobble back and start to gasp.
And suddenly Lucian materialises.
The room freezes as he advances, his black and stifling presence choking. Tall, dressed all black, his golden eyes sparkle with something that makes my gut turn over.
Kieran's declared opponent, Lucian Wolfe, the Rogue King.
And my darling fiancé?
Blinking, I struggle to understand the words echoing in my ears.
The anarchy is broken by my father's words. "Selene, you have no option. You are going to wed him.
No. Not at all. Not at all
Lucian smiles and lightly runs his fingers across my wrist. "Well, this only got interesting." His golden eyes darted to Kieran, laughing-heavy. You turned her down? Fantastic. That helps me to work at less effort.
Kieran tightens, his shoulders stiff. His teeth close, but he says nothing.
He does nothing except stand there.
And observes watches.
As Lucian regards me.
At my soul, the treachery claws cut.
"Shall we??" Lucian whispers, and I follow him away.
Kieran still moves nothing.
He doesn't stop me.
He releases me.
I glance one final at Kieran through the veiled glass as Lucian drags me into his black sedan.
Still standing in the ballroom, he has vacant, soulless, hollow silver eyes fixed on me.
Then immediately before the door closes.
I noticed it.
A slink of something sinister and black behind his eyes.
Something indicates to me that this is not finished.
Not exactly close.
Let me kiss you.
Lucian's voice is sinister, a demand wrapped in silk that makes me shudder.
My heart thumping in my chest, I push myself against the door of his elegant black automobile. There is no such possibility here.
"What?" asked. My voice hardly whispers at all.
Lucian approaches closely, his golden eyes flashing with something deadly.
Let me, Selene, kiss you. He looks at me like a predator, tilts his head. "Unless you would prefer to return to your dear Alpha? Oh, wait! he tossed you aside. *
Raw and relentless, pain erupts in my chest. Like Kieran's icy rejection, which cuts deeper than any blade, it rings in my head.
I breathe and say, "You're sick." "You find this to be a game?"
"No, sweetheart," Lucian says, his fingertips caressing my jaw and slants my chin upward. His touch causes my pulse to rise because it is icy and possessive. "There is war here."
He approaches close.
I ought to drive him away. Engage him in combat.
But instead, Kieran's face flashes in my head—his icy, apathetic look as I was being hauled away.
He stopped me not once more.
He allowed me to depart.
Something snaps within me.
"Wonderful." My voice is challenging and crisp. I will make Kieran regret it should he object to me.
I grasp Lucian's collar before I can think and smother my lips to his.
The kiss is a fight of domination and defiance, fire and wrath. Lucian gasps; his hold on my waist gets tighter as he deepens the kiss, consuming everything I provide and demanding more.
But reality smashes into me the instant his teeth graze across my lower lip.
Just what the devil am I doing?
Breathless, I thrust him away.
Lucian laughs; his thumb runs across his lips. "That wasn't so bad, now, was it?"
Shame and fury boil across my face.
"You are getting to Kieran using me." My vocal trembles. "That is what this is about, isn't it?"
Lucian's grin gets more acute. And you are using me to forget him.
My breathing pauses.
Thank you for being right.
From the shadows, I follow Lucian's lips claiming hers.
Every one of my muscles locks. My beast roaring in suffering, my claws pierce my palms.
I ought to cut him apart. Ruck his throat.
I still do not move though.
For I have no entitlement to.
I tossed her off.
And today she is in his arms.
As I see her push Lucian away, her breathing ragged and her eyes ablaze with anger, a growl rattles in my breast.
She's really angry.
Since this isn't done over here.
Not quite close.
I turn aside and into the darkness.
Lucian believes he is winning.
He believes he can get what is mine.
Selene will never be his though.
Not throughout my current breathing cycle.
Lucian guides me into his home, a chilly and eerie space rife with tales of battle and c*****e.
Breaking the quiet, "Why me?" I ask.
Lucian stops then looks back towards me. "because you're unique."
I snub. "That's not an answer."
"Isn't It?" His eyes dance with something incomprehensible. "You believe Kieran turned you away because you are weak? But, Selene, you are not. Inside you, something even you cannot yet grasp has power.
Freeze here. " What are you talking about?"
Lucian leans back with a smile. "You'll see soon enough."
A cold rushes down my back.
But the air thickens before I can demand explanations.
A presence—dark, oppressive.
The doors flap open.
And there, at the door, eyes flaming silver with rage...
Kerry.
"Practice away from her, Lucian."
His voice is low, dead, and dangerous.
Only Lucian laughs. "Jealous already?" That was rapid.
The walls quake with Kieran's snarl. "I want you to be warned."
Lucian draws me in with his hand on my waist. Create myself.
I stop to gather my breath.
Oh, not quite right.
This is going to become a war.
Lucian grins while gripping tightly.
