I built the strategy that put Julian Thorne in the CEO’s chair. I also agreed to become his wife. For three years, I answered his calls, fixed his numbers, and let him take the credit. At our engagement party, he handed my M&A proposal and my place beside him to another woman. The room went quiet. Everyone wanted to see whether I would cry. I checked my phone instead. Julian had just ended the contract that kept his career alive.

Chapter 1 The One-Hundred-Million-Dollar Contract
The stem of my champagne flute pressed into my fingers while Julian Thorne raised his glass. Conversations stopped across the grand ballroom of The Plaza. New York’s best-dressed gossips had come for our engagement announcement, and Julian enjoyed making them wait. They knew tonight was supposed to be ours. Everyone was waiting for the formal announcement and ready to carry every detail to the next party. Then he turned away from me. “To Chloe.” She stood at his right shoulder in the emerald green Valentino dress selected for me. Julian looked at her with an earnestness he usually saved for cameras. Chloe held a leather-bound proposal against her waist. I had spent six weeks on those pages, working through black coffee and sleepless nights while correcting the same projections Julian kept breaking. The M&A strategy would secure his position as CEO. “She captured my heart,” he said. “She also designed the Thorne Industries and Sterling Corp merger. Chloe is a true visionary.” The first whisper came from behind me. Then chairs shifted and half the room turned to look. Some guests pitied me. Others had waited years to see Julian’s quiet assistant lose her access to the Thorne family. The rest watched with open curiosity, expecting tears or shouting before dessert. Chloe adjusted her grip on my proposal. She was Julian’s new assistant as well as my replacement at his side. She had my dress, my work, and the place reserved for his fiancée. She could keep all three. I had expected the moment to hurt. I had even planned where to stand if my knees gave out. What came was relief. Three years of answering midnight calls, rewriting board papers, and smiling through Julian’s speeches had ended in one toast. He kissed Chloe’s cheek. She smiled toward the photographers. Neither of them looked at me until I lifted my glass. The room quieted again. Julian’s smile slipped. “Congratulations, Julian,” I said. “To you both.” I drank, set the flute on a waiter’s tray, and walked out. No speech. No thrown glass. Behind me, several people began talking at once because I had denied them the scene they wanted. Outside, the night air cooled my face. I took the first taxi at the curb and settled into the back seat while The Plaza disappeared behind us. Gold and white lights slid across the window as we entered Manhattan traffic. For once, no one was asking me to fix anything. My phone buzzed in my clutch. A bank alert filled the screen. **INCOMING WIRE TRANSFER: $100,000,000.00 USD** **REFERENCE: THORNE SR. - CONTRACT FULFILLED** Three years earlier, Julian’s grandfather had summoned me to his office and put a contract on the desk. His grandson was close to losing both his inheritance and Thorne Industries. I would write the strategies, manage his image, repair the public mistakes, and get Julian into the CEO’s chair. Every success had to look as if it belonged to him. The role included devoted assistant and fiancée. If I stayed for three years and completed the assignment, I would receive enough money to leave on my own terms. Julian had the title. I had the transfer. The contract was complete. My phone buzzed again. A text message from Julian. *This little drama is enough, Elara. Come back to the party. If you apologize for making a scene, we can still be friends.* A laugh escaped before I could stop it. I had left without raising my voice, yet Julian had already rewritten the evening so that I owed him an apology. He still believed I had spent three years competing for his affection. To me, his name had always appeared under Client. I powered down my phone, popped open the back, and removed the SIM card. The SIM card broke between my fingers. I lowered the window and dropped both pieces into Manhattan traffic. No more calls for Elara Vance, assistant and agreeable fiancée. “Where to, miss?” the driver asked, glancing at me in the rearview mirror. “JFK,” I said. “International terminal.”
