Chapter 19: Apex Ridge

Elias and Riley crouched behind a snow-covered boulder at the edge of the compound's perimeter fence.

The air was bitterly cold, their breath rising in thick white plumes. Inside the double-layered chain-link fence, two automated security drones hummed softly as they patrolled the snow-dusted perimeter walkway, their spotlight beams sweeping across the ground.

"Military-grade security," Riley whispered, pulling a compact directional EMP pulse device from her bag. "This will disable the fence sensors and the drones for ninety seconds, but it's a one-shot device."

"Ninety seconds is enough," Elias said. "Where is the master backup terminal?"

"In the reinforced bunker beneath the central relay tower," she replied, checking her hand-drawn schematic. "Once we're inside, we sever the satellite transmitter cables directly."

Riley aimed the EMP device toward the nearest power relay box mounted on the fence post and pulled the trigger.

A silent wave of electromagnetic force erupted forward. The perimeter floodlights instantly went dark, and both patrol drones dropped harmlessly into the snowbank with a soft thud.

"Go!" Elias hissed.

They sprinted across the open ground, using heavy wire cutters to snip a gap through the chain-link fence. Slipping through the opening, they darted across the snowy courtyard toward the heavy blast door at the base of the relay tower.

Elias jammed his override tool into the electronic lock mechanism, bypassing the local power circuit. The blast door unlatched with a heavy metallic clunk, swinging inward.

They slipped inside just as the compound's secondary emergency generators kicked back on, illuminating the courtyard in bright red warning lights.

The heavy door slammed shut behind them, locking out the freezing wind.

They stood in a long, concrete corridor echoing with the hum of high-voltage transformers. At the far end of the hallway stood a massive steel vault door marked: **MASTER CORE ARCHIVE.**
