The red dot centered on Elias’s chest burned like a brand through his jacket.
He raised his hands slowly, his flashlight beam wavering in the damp air. "I'm not armed," Elias said, his voice echoing off the cavernous concrete walls. "Who are you?"
A footsteps heavy against the steel grate sounded overhead as a tall figure emerged from the shadow of the upper catwalk. The man wore a dark tactical jacket, his face partially obscured by a ballistic mask. In his hands was a rifle fitted with a laser sight.
"Who we are isn't important, Vance," the man replied, his gravelly voice echoing through the chamber. "What matters is what you heard on frequency 108.9. You were supposed to ignore the static, like everyone else. But you just couldn't leave it alone, could you?"
Elias glanced down at the glowing portable server rack in front of him. Blue LED indicators flickered furiously as high-bandwidth data streamed through the illegal relay.
"You're hijacking the city's private emergency bandwidth," Elias realized aloud, connecting the pieces in his head. "This isn't just radio chatter. You're running an encrypted surveillance network across Oakhaven."
"And you just decoded our location," the man said, lowering his rifle slightly, though the laser remained pinned to Elias’s sternum. "Which makes you a major security risk—or a potential asset."
"I'm not helping you," Elias growled.
"You don't have a choice," the figure replied coldly. "You see, the decryption key you unlocked at midnight wasn't just a signal. It was a trigger. By connecting your mixing board to our frequency, you gave us full access to your home server. Every file, every audio recording you've ever stored... it's ours now."
A surge of anger replaced the fear in Elias's veins. His hands tightened into fists. He looked at the server rack at his feet and noticed a thick black power cable running directly into an ungrounded junction box right next to a pool of standing rainwater.
Elias acted on pure instinct.
He swung his heavy metal flashlight as hard as he could into the exposed junction box. Sparks violently exploded in a blinding flash of white light, accompanied by a deafening electric pop.
The main lights instantly died, plunging the facility into total darkness.
"Kill him!" the man shouted from above, followed by the metallic clatter of heavy boots charging down the stairs.
Elias didn't hesitate. He reached out into the dark, grabbed the primary USB data drive from the front panel of the sparking server, and sprinted blindly toward the open metal door into the pouring rain.
